hey , does anyone know any good areas for catching kahli ? any tips and techniques would be appreciated ( what kind of rod , rigs, bait ect ) because i have never gone after this species and i would like to try but people seem to be very secretive about it ( in true malta fashion)

Best way to catch Kahli is with Forok. St.Paul's bay area is all quite good, especially the at the Jetty. Ideally you need a boat to fish with forok.

hi guys
another method for catching kahli is with a 6-8mt carbon hand rod just using 14-18 line and size 6-8 hook

i use this method at night in comino next to (L irqieqa or il fanal) first i bait up with sea urchins then with bits of bread floating at the surface when i see the fish take bread at the surface i mix the bread with water and feed about 5mt away from me. i usually do this for about 20 mins before i start fishing so the bigger ones can move in
as bait i use bread or ckall or hniex in summer and ghalluq in winter.
if after 30 mins nothing decent comes in i feed for another20mins and so on

good luck

I'd love to see a good photo of the saddled brim here. I'm in the dark as to what they are, but I'm currious.

no float just line and hook
you let it drift to the bottom and when the fish takes it you will know
just remember when you feel the fish pull, pull the fish out or else you will scare the rest

Another technique is to prepare a .20mm line with a small hook. Dip your fingers in vaseline and wipe 10 metres of the line with it just until the hook. Then attach a small piece of bread to the hook, just let it float away. The vaseline will help the line to stay on the surface, invisible for the bream. However, in my opinion, forok is still the best option. I use a slightly different technique with forok. Instead of 2 or 3 hooks, I use 8 hooks. The forka is placed on a sandwich of bread and the hooks go right through the sanwich. The kahli will only be able to see the sandwich. Work very well for me.

One of the best ways I know is to use:
1) a 16-18 line on a pole (5-6m...not more)
2) attached to a 6-8 hook
3) no groundbait.
4) use very fresh sliced bread. Cut off a small piece, attach to hook and squeeze a small part over the hook so that it does unattach easily.
5) Before casting throw in some pieces of bread to attract the big ones close to shore. The closer they are to shore, the better. Once cast the bread should float. Do not use sinkers, swivels or floats. they are dead giveaways for kahli.
6) Once hooked make sure to get the fish out of the sea as quickly as possible, otherwise the remaining fish will get the jitters.
7) To accomplish 6) you might have to adjust the rod to that there is very little action.
8) Only fish when conditions are right, i.e., quite rough sea and cast where there is surf as the wave moves out and carry your bait with it.
9) After each fish caught wait a couple of minutes.
10) As you know these fish are devillishly crafty and clever. Once they spot the line or one escapes you'll have to wait an hour before catching again (moral of the story: make sure you have alternative fishing methods).
Hope this info helps in some way
