In this article it states that all sword fish cought by recreational fisherman has to be released. I thought it was undersised only, ecxcept for the two month closed season.

No confusion guys. Only recreational fishermen possessing a valid tuna licence can land 1 tuna between 30 and 50kgs for personal use (keeps). You are obliged to call in the designated person at least 4 hrs before making port to have the tuna inspected by one of the persons indicated in the legal notice. All other tuna caught which do not fall within the weight range MUST be released. Also, I must repeat, that the tuna which is caught can only be used for personal consuption. It cannot be sold commercially. If you want to sell it, then special permission must be granted by the fisheries, and the full proceeds of that sale are to be donated to charity.

Everyone please note that what is written in that article, most of it is the sole opinion of the juornalist. I was ther taking part, no one came and asked questions not to me nor to any of my friends. As most of you know that we always stress about the catch and release.

Yes that article is not fair and depicts all fishing enthusiasts as wanting to fish without any consideration of rules or sustainability. It is clearly not the case. The article is also factually wrong. It states that sargi are sold at 4.50 euros per kg. I wonder from where you can buy sargi at that price! It also states that a 16-17 cm sargu would weigh 350-400g. That is not so. The fish are measured from the tip of the snout to the tail. A 16 cm sargu (where the 16 cm would include at least 3 cm of tail) would not weigh more than 100g or so. However I do think that in the case of sargi the minimum size of 23 cm is somewhat high when compared to other fish.

From the information i managed to get from fishbase, the sargu of 17cm will be 2 years old and reaches sexual maturity. At that time they starts breeding. In my opinion if we want to see more sargi we need to let them breed before we catch them. At least they have to be 19cm. ant at that size they are fairly good size.

When I say that the 23 cm size is somewhat large I am comparing the sargu with fish which grow to the same size as the sargu or even bigger (I have in mind pagell and pagri) but where the minimum legal size is much less than 23 cm. To put back a 22cm sargu (probably close to half a kg or so )....just the right size for dinner...

i agree with allowing them to breed before taking them. these restrictions will allow us to catch fish for years to come.
