sorry siehbi but was better write this topic in a different way.

Be aware for the speed in inshore bays. Over speeding can kill swimmers and divers

I agree Emic but to one who has no respect to others its better if you tell him that he has to pay 600 euros than that he might kill someone. I  believe that Mulett hit it on the head as he said the same thing as you did but for these people he was more effective YES?

In wied iz-zurrieq it wont be long before we have the first diving casualty.  The bloody blue grotto boats have no respect whatsoever to swimmers and divers alike .. they just want a quick buck.  Driving out of wied they only care to distribute the life jackets and collect tickets from the tourists and most of them dont even look to see whats ahead in the sea.

Yesterday whilst diving there i was barely 5m away from the shore .. so much so that my marker buoy was still about 1m from the shore and two consecutive bastards passed a couple of feet away from me .. one even had the guts to shout at me and test my temper.  I think there should be some kind of buoys indicating a swimming area within which we can swim freely and out of which money-hungry boaters keep out.  We have already lost much of the area to the scuba divers who come in large groups day and night .. hope at least somebody realises that zurrieq locals (as any other maltese) have the right to enjoy a decent swim/dive there as well.

I'm obviously forwarding this complaint to MMA .. but be aware yourselves that in Wied iz-zurrieq there is no respect towards SMBs and your life is dangerously compromised when swimming/diving there.

Poldimar IF I may ask??
I know that wied iz zurrieq is restricted in spearfishing. Basically the area is protected due to the prescence of the oum el faroud. So can we know if there is a spot where you can get in the water from land? Legally speaking.

This is a situation that the MFF moderator team is very actively following.  Nick and myself were invited to a 45minute interview Campus FM, where we stressed the importance of Safety at Sea, both for Spear fishers and boaters/boat fishing alike.  However, the buck does not stop there.  We are at present following a number of leads to be invited on chat shows on local TV to pass on this very important message of Safety at Sea.

Baghira,

There is a sign at Wied iz-zurrieq indicating the spearfishing whilst scuba diving is illegal.  I know of incidences however where even apnea spearfishers were stopped from doing so.  The reason for 'the ban' was that no type of fishing is allowed on the Um El Faroud .. so strictly speaking you can spearfish anywhere in the locality except on the ship.  I was just snorkelling around yesterday not spearfishing .. and as things stand at the moment its a no spearfishing zone if you want to see another day!!

I cant' get this part????
These are signs that are affixed everywhere. But the MMA had issued restricted areas where spearfishing was not allowed. This does not only cover the oum el faroud area but also the area surrounding it. Emic had some nice plans of the are if he could kindly post again...

As far as I know; Legally : you can spearfish in wied iz-zurrieq as long as you are not using scuba tanks and as long as you are not spearfishing on Um el Faroud.

However in practical terms : the area between Kalanka (the innermost part of Wied) up to Blue grotto) is a 'no go. area as it is full of boats running less than 10m away from cliff/shore.

bigboy

This morning we nearly lost out fishing boat next to the pixkerija!!!!!!!!!

We were unloading the catch and all of a sudden 3 big waves came from the tuna boats and if it were not for us and another 5 people to hold the boat it would have got smashed against the wall of the pixkerija(who has fish there knows how dangerous it is next to the stairs). It was un beleivable we were shocked. We immediately informed valletta port control and the answer was : Tell your officer to give you antoher place where to unload.

This is another thing to show how foisheries are imposing new rules without looking at the consequences. After a night out for work we are obliged to load our catch at the pixkerija and not at our home port (msida). If the jetty was adequate it would have been ok but the jetty is a disaster and you can destroy a bout in a split of a second.

By the way
well done gaffer/.
Keep it up.

That signs are only a way to say to foreigners that spearfishing is illegal in Malta when using .... .... ... I hear a lot of comments even when diving at Ghar Lapsi with even Maltese people asking if its a reserve or not. Even I was reading a book regards Diving in Malta  written very recently whey the writer says, " spearfishing is illegal in Malta and please report the fact to the authorities". In their book there is no where mention that its illegal when using in combined with scuba diving.

Practically in Zurrieq area one cannot go out with the speargun loaded. In fact there was times that even doing free diving on wrecks there where people taking us photos. Pitty that we where using a suit cos could had showed them our a.....

If you go to the gallery  in the spearfishing selection one can fing the reserve zones on wrecks, where even I believe that there should be no type of fishing on them of any kind.

TOFTOF

At Xemxija overspeeding is nowadays a norm.
From Beach Haven to Barracudas pitch some speed boats are already speeding at full speed.
Its a matter of time before some swimmer gets hit ! especially on a Sunday afternoon
