An interesting article on the TIMES on the problems being faced by traditional fishermen
http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20110822/opinion/Fate-of-traditional-fisherman.381295

and what about the traditional fishing practice of pariti?

Is that sustainable as well?

I do not like the idea of the use of paritii as I feel that these are indiscriminate having said that, the major problem with the use of paritii is when these are used within bays or other breeding places.
Maybe if these are used in a manner that will take into consideration breeding seasons and that these are kept out of breeding areas maybe we can live with these.
I am not sure how long a parit is but maybe if these are say 300 500 meters long maybe a law need to be passed for shorter nets. After all do they not have the same function as the long nets used by commercial fishing boats mentioned in the article.
A lot of MAYBEs there...but they are there intentionally as maybe we need to give the same rights to all fishermen as long as they abide by the law.
I have on occasion witnessed paritii right up against the shore at Cirkewwa or right at the mouth of the valley of Zurrieq.
In that case this is not only stupid but also illegal.
