currents while spearfishing

not to spoil the fun , but this one has some useful information for everyone. this guy from new zealand was taken out into the pacific by a current while collecting crayfish (collected like we take octopus) . 

he said the current was not noticable from the surface, but only in a certain spot which he ended up while in pursuit of a crayfish.

in malta do we have currents like these (not on the weather forecast, or in opposite direction), that can take you by surprise? thanks

I have never experienced such currents in Malta. I am not a super diver but I have been to many places to spearfish whole year long,
