Both are great brands it all depends on what your requirements/budget/integration etc.

Am not going to use it for more than 300mtrs of depth surely as am a beginner in these things...,

Garmin 451S would be their entry level model and from Lowrance Elite-5 would be their entry level model (The Elite-4 is very small)

300m is not shallow and if you plan to do some deep bottom fishing I suggest to get a 1kW transducer (with compatible fishfinder ofcourse).

I would compare specs and value for money rather than brands.

For example, I had a Garmin 400C and now purchased a Humminbird 788ciHD. The Humminbird was more expensive, however its much better resolution made a world of a difference. For example, with the Garmin I would only get to see blobs whereas with the Humminbird, I get to see fish arches, both full and half ones according to where the fish are. Apart from this, with the Humminbird I have features such as saving screenshots on an SD card, moving the cursor to a fish arch and the unit will tell me the co-ords and depth of that fish, etc.

For a beginner you cant go past the lower end scale of the hummingbird range, though my opinion is to buy the best one that you can afford in either a Garmin or Furuno. Furuno would be my first choice.
