Guys, I read with interest the earlier threads about deep water fishing and the variety (& sizes!) of fish you catch.

Would you consider the area opposite Maghtab / Splash&Fun as a good spot for deep fishing at night?

If yes, how far would you need to go out ?

I also notice in the another forum thread that St.Pauls Bay fish farms is a good area but i tend to put the boat down from Maghtab slip so would prefer this area although it would probably take 20mins with a 9.9 Bahri to reach the fishfarm.

tks alot.

i never went that area but there the sea is not very deep. for deep sea fishing you can go during the day. the night is good for sargi but you stay close to shore

EmicMalta

for what kind of fish do you go? I can help better cos we see the fish and know where are the best places

bahri

thanks for your reply. it would be great if you could help us find a spot for pagell or sargi!

at the moment its long time i didn t fished over there but pagell isn t a fish that i see a lot. For sargi, yes there are. Next time i will be there, i try to have a gps points. There are some good places.

I think there is more dentex then pagell in that area.

bully int!

until you get the gps positions ... assuming the area is opposite the splash&fun - can you give me a rough guesstimate of how long you think it would take with a 9.9 to get to the spot?

would you bait with shrimps?

tks

bigboy

From past experience the area in front of splash and fun starting from in front of raddisson and all the way up to ponta tal qawra is a very good place for pagell, pagri, dentex, sargi and also the occasional ternuta. Try to fish close to the ledge or keep 0.1 miles inside from it. We had some very good results from there fishing with long lines. there is a ledge (xifer) at 1mile away from shore which is good but then there is a far more better one heading out maybe those 5 miles. some good depths of 70fa. i wouldnt suggest shrimps. id rather use pieces of tumbrell, lacci, kavalli, squid and sicca. sound them to be the best bait out there. ;)

bahri

thank you bigboy for your information

unfortunately i need some more spoonfeeding ...

i will try and find the ledge using your bearings (straight line from raddisson to ponta tal qawra) because i dont know about the ledge and dont have a depth finder!

do you have gps bearings of the ledge?

what size hooks do you go with?

what size (weight) line for the hook (xlief mas sunnara)?

would you recommend the metal type (zewg tal hadid)?

What do you mean by "... sound them to be the best bait out there"?

sorry i was meant to say find them lol. I use 0.60mm as for the ferha, and 0.90mm medda. when fishing in over 70fa use at least a 200g weight. as for hook size use mustad size 12 sieq twila. do you have a gps with map ? if yes you will have them shown on it.

bahri

bully int xbien. thanks for that useful info!

no i dont have a gps with map but a seperate gps bluetooth receiver which i pair/hook up to my mobile/pda.

guys is it feasible to fish with a 200g weight in a dept of say 100mts "fuq idejk" (on the hand! without a reel) ?

also, in this dept would one typically anchor or leave it the anchor half down?

cheers

A 200g lead sinker is sufficient in that depth of water, however it also depends on the line you will be using.  I would suggest a main line(medda) of say .50 or .60mm...ferha .45mm while the terminal(brazzol) .30-.35mm.  Always use long shank hooks, (tal qazba twila)...and you should be fine

Whether you anchor up usually depends on the current and your drift in relation to where you want to fish and where your fish finder is marking the fish. It's obviously alot easier to anchor in 100m of water than in 500m!

Considering the prices of reels I personally would still prefer to use a reel for depths of 100m and not your hands! If you do go for a reel make sure it has a high gear ratio, around 4.0:1 or greater as that gives you faster retreive rates.

For those kind of depths I wouldn't say it's classified as deep bottom fishing so you won't need an electric reel and have quite a choice of reels to use, you could even use a heavy duty spinning style reel matched to a bottom/jigging rod. The most cost effective favourite that people seem to recommend is either the Shimano Spheros 14000FB/18000FB $129 or one of the Penn Spinfishers like the 950 ssm.

If you want a versatile reel good for trolling, jigging and bottom fishing have a look at the Shimano Tyrnos 30 II. It's a two speed reels, rated for 600 yards of 30lbs line, with a high ratio gear for bottom fishing/jigging and a low ratio gear for trolling and when you're hooked up to a bigger fish. You could easily back that with Spectra/Powerpro if you wanted more line capacity than 600 yards. Price from the USA is around $360

Bahri, if i were you i would not anchor as because if there is a really slight drift you are constantly changing the bottom you are fishing on and i think it is much more effective. In that area you are intending of fishing you dont really need a reel you can easyly fish using ur honds on handline. 0.80mm (medda) would be just fine.
