Title: Jigging Rods
Post by: bigboy on September 25, 2008, 21:39:15 CET
Guys was just watching Misterfisherman and camkev & Myself have decided to get rigged up for jigging to give it a try when we are out maybe we hook one of those beautiful specimens of the abbyss.

What type of rod do you recomend???

Also what type of reel???

As for good places i was thinking of trying Drop offs from reefs and also drop offs around the coast at a depth of maybe 30 - 50m.

Thanks,

BigBoy

If you're jigging the old fashioned way, by hand! Definately the Shimano Tyrnos 30 II speed is a fantastic versatile reel. Not so familar on the rods though had posted some links in a similar thread.

Try to be carefull if you use a rod like the one Josef was using as he broke it in 2 after taking the fish out of the water  :P

By hand as in using your hand on a regular reel to pull up the fish and not using a fancy computerised electric reel that has a jigging program!

The rod has to be fairly rigid, ie, if you do not have a specific jigging rod use a trolling rod indicating a specific weigth, say 30lbs, not 20-30lbs.  Other important factros are the speed of the reel which should be between 4.5 and 5.0.  Multifibre is a must, mono springs too much and the movement is not transmitted to the metal lure; also, multifibre enable you to reach deeper waters.  Last 5-10m in flourocarbon, connected with a knot to be able to wind all the line into the reel.  To the flourocarbon I attach a strong swivel (100lbs+), then a split ring, to which I attach the assist hook and the jig itself.  Do not use treble hooks unless you are fishing in mid-water, and even in that case you do not actually need treble hooks since the assist work wonders.

Regarding fishing areas, try deeper waters, they are much more productive.

I think jigging is not as easy as it seems. It is really not a relaxing king of fishing. I prefer trolling and longlines and when it is windy i find nothing better than "mrejkba". (english translation) [bigboy]

I'm very happy with my Tica Jigging Master 90-250g, I think its a fantastic overall rod for less than €100.

If you go for a Shimano, avoid the Beastmaster and seriously consider the Speedmaster instead, not sure about local prices but the Italian sites have some good offers.

if you're going to spend over €100 on a jigging rod I would seriously consider speaking with Clutch_kick rather than buying a production rod. you'll probably get alot more bang for your buck like that.

Hey guys just got a shimano saragosa 18000F but i still havent bought a rod.
From personal experience what rod do you think is suitable. I dont wont to go over board with the price tag since i've already spent a good amount on the reel.

if you are mainly using long jigs i suggest a 6ft rod with a medium action, if you mainly use short jigs then a 5ft or a 5ft6in rod is ideal with a fast action to enable you to work the jig fast.

Are there any rods you would suggest. Im trying to find something under 100Euro
Title: Re: Jigging Rods

I suggest you spend a bit more and get a good rod right away. The rod plays a very BIG role in jigging.  A cheap rod will just make it harder to fish, and put you off jigging quicker.  I also suggest Fuji or equivalent guides.

These are some Rods i can get and might be intereting for you.

Artico V.J. Mediterraneo 100-200g 1.80mt 2pc (butt joint) Titanium Guides (not Fuji)

Artico VERTICAL JIGGING 60-200g 1.90mt 1pc Fuji Guides ( SiC or Alconite your choice)

Artico FAST Jigging 60-200g 1,60m 1pc Fuji Guides ( SiC or Alconite )

I will get you the prices as soon as I know what the shipping costs are.
There is also a huge range of some serious surf casting rords for those interested.
