Hit it hard on its tail !! It will die in seconds.
Always be careful when dealing with them especially if big !!

be care full with that hehe... it's mouth is a very sharpen knife..
I got the idea from lapsi boy, that when you get it up just throw it in a "Xkora"

Yes thats the way i handle those mosters...i throw it in a sack and leave it die quietly...

if you have a 'ganc' gaff it near its mouth so as to have a very good grip and that way you can control it. then hit it really hard on its head or tail. obviously be really carefull from its mouth as once it bites it does not let go!
Title: Re: morina
Post by: shanook on October 11, 2008, 09:04:08 CET
it cannot let go as its teeth are bent inwards.

As Gazzetta says hit it hard between its vent (arse) & its tail, thats where its "lymph heart" is, it will then die very quickly, so you dont have to keep looking where it is! :o

altough it s not compatible with this topic exactly.once i was fishing in quiet beach with a bogue as a live bait and after about a half an hour a fish got hooked up and it was taking many line because it was a very strong fish .it took me several time till i began to see float and lucky there was a hunter and when he saw me that it was very difficult to land the enormous fish without having a gaff or a fishing net he came up with the idea to shoot the fish and he killed it .then i landed it safely and it was a well sized barracuda more than 5kg surely because i didnt weighed it because i gave it to the hunter immediatly

In the past me and a very old friend of mine used to go fishing for Morina and we used to catch really big ones. I used to kill them with 2 very long, longnose pliers which I bought from (rolson). They are 14 inch long and it's very safe to grip them from the mouth. use one to hold it from the bottom jaw and with the other one just squash the upper jaw including the brain for few seconds and it will start shaking and dies within 2 mins.

if they are really big we used a plastic 3inch drain pipe slitted from one side so that you pass the line from the slit and then slide it over the morina in order to have only the head out of the pipe and it will be impossible for the morina to knot her self with your hand. and then u can use the pliers easily.

to be honest I really love killing does bastards ::)

Be carefull if opting for the shot gun, that the fish isn't in the boat, or you'll be swimming. LOL

This is no Joke:  The only time  caught a morina was a few years ago, and while I held it steadily from its head, tried to disgorge the hook.  The blighter rolled around my arm and tried to bite me in the hand...so I paniced, and bite down hard on its head!!!!.....while telling the SOB what you can do, I can do better!!!!

I remember once Many many moons ago i joined a fishing weekend at cirkewwa with my father and uncle and loads of policemen which used to work with this uncle of mine, after the first 5 hours of fishing there where around 15+ morini held in buckets and bags (still alive) being a guy who hates killing fish I opted to trow these viscios things in a wide hole next to us. After 32 hours strait of fishing with something like 20 rods this pool was pretty much full. Guess how many cuts and bites the guys got before we headed home ?

Imo best way to handle a morina is to get a pair of scissors cut the hook line and watch it swim down.

Once me adn my grandpa caught a morina 14kilos on a 12 foot boat while collecting a deep long line. We had to stay 3 hours on the engine box waiting for it to die because every time we tried to reach it we couldn't manage because it was very powerful. So I think the best way for morini is cut the line and let it go.....................................

Why throw it away it is very good fish to eat. When I catch one when diving just hold it behind her head with gloves because it is very slippery and with the knife I cut where the upper and lower teeth join together after I put the knife between her eyes and she dies

just trow it in a sack... jump on it a bit and "Sabbata ma xi hajt" u tmut dw lol.. Get the hook out by just poping a bit it's head out after it completly dies (a few minutes) and get it out carefully.

That's all folks!

lol...The best moment after catching a morina is when i hit the sack to the wall or to the floor and than i look inside and i see a total slauther = R.I.P LOL :P

Ramxx if it dosen't die with the method of the "lembuba" I think if you find a "Kantun" in some corner and just throw it on it's head MAYBE it dies :P... LOL

Have looked into this as have caught quite a few latley , the best & hopefully the least cruel way of killing it is to chop the head off . Came across this video of how they kill them in Tiawanese restaurants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SEb_vJa7Hg

When I'm diving I very rarely catch morays - last time I caught one was about 1 year ago as a friend of mine wanted one and I shot the first large one I encountered (was with Simon and Edward). Although I never tried eating a moray, I never shoot them as a general rule, as it's hard to kill them - I always shoot at the head or as close to it as I can get but it always takes long to kill such a fish - maybe I'm soft and spearfishing is not good for me...but I hate slow deaths!

I don t like fishing for morina much. One is the danger after catching and two what to do with it afterwards .When i tried to eat it was excessively full of bones .Maybe you have some kind of trick how to clean it or cook it?

i am not a very good cook but my sister and a lot of other people say its makes very good fish soup, and my sister says she likes it as a fish as well....but maybe because her partner goes fishing but never catches any decent fish :) :) :)
But now i will ask her the best way to cook it  (shanook)

Thanks for the info. For -aljotta i think it s good because you prepare it and the remaining of the fish ,be thrown away.its meat seems good but with excessive bones like netted from inside with bones.

when i go fishing i always like to use a rod with cable wire and hook a whole bouge and when I catch one, the best way i find to kill it that I take of my sandals and hit it hard on the tail and it gets tamed. heard also that there's who cuts a piece of the tail to tame it but still i've didn't tried it out cause recently i wasn't going fishing for them (fishfinder)

If you want to catch morina from the shore go to Sliema where the captain morgan boats go from and walk up to the left and fish in front of the church up to the hotel swimming pool. fish on the bottom useing smelly fish, not fresh, as bait.the bait wants to be approx 2 inches by a quarter of an inch. don,t strike when the rod tip moves leave it  untill the line starts moving. use size one hooks .GUARENTEED.

sorry to wake up a dead topic guys....
last sunday i went to the normal fishing spot (from land), using shrimps...
i started fishing as usual, 5m rod...all of a sudden the rod dived into the water...after a few minutes of struggle a morina came up to the surface (1st morina). As soon as i saw the morina, the diameter of it was very close to a normal cocacola 2L bottle, i slowly gave it time to tire it out, after a while the morina dived into the rocks. i wasn't able to get it out... i had to take the line to the limit...and :( the line got cut...

guys could you give me some tips what to do in case another morina got caught on my line??!?! and stuck inside the rocks??

I can't understand  ???why you are saying that it is worthless bigboy Morina like some other bottom fish can do a very good fish soup :P. All to do is put it into a net while cooking and you will not have any spines or bones around into your soup besides this it can be nice to fish especially "meta trejhila"

Post by: bigboy on December 22, 2008, 19:19:31 CET
Fisheye for fava who is not experienced it gould easily hurt him if not handled well.

I do keep them when i catch on long lines because a friend of mine eats them but i handle them well and always gaff them when close to the boat i take no chances.

Sometimes i catch 20kg + of mrejjen so
