Looking at buying a new GPS does anyone that can recommend of what make & model I should go for. ???
GPS well i like Garmin a lot. Easy to use and reliable. So my suggestion is a Garmin. Although i dont like the agent very much but what can u do.... they have good after sales service so its not that bad. its the service with a smile that gets me LOL.
Me too i prefer garmin. I have the GPS Chat plotter 172 ( its in black and white). Its very easy to use it.
I would say Eagle / Lowrance all the way, amazing toys ;)

Navman are my choice, I have had my Navman 5600 Chartplotter for 3 yrs, & the only trouble I have had, is when the aeriel cable has been pulled out of the "mushroom" by accident. I have had my Garmin 72 handheld GPS for 4 yrs, & all I do with that is change the batteries, its my back up, but its a first class "auxillary".

I had bought 2 Garmin 72. I us them as for diving and can say that are the best ever had. Simple and really cheap from ebay (usa)
The best one I found is Emic because you take him with you to a place let him dive and he tells you were the fish are! ;D :P ;D
hahah lool nice ^^ and d most cheapest in d market ee spitec xtahseb :P
hehhehehhe.......... sure
But belive me that last time I was with buzu and my dad and I shoot a grouper in the hole. Then when I went to take it out saw another 4 and 2 cawluwni. Had problems to take the grouper out cos was with only 1 speargun so had to get back to gnejna to get another gun. We left fresh bait in front of the hole and even if there was so much fish, no one touched it.
Spitec for me there is no problems to give places but as you know me, I only give them to whom they have respect to the sea and towards me

Ha ha ha ;D Emic what do you say! How much do you charge per day!!!!
All thanks for all your feedback I will start looking at the models mentioned.
don t worry tatanka, I always go for free and I share all my catch. I go for fun and the best thing is to get fish.
I go with lots of guys but an important thing is not to share grouper`s places. I work hard for them and my price is when I shoot them. This year Giovanni and I, we had landed over 20 groupers. The important was that from all these groupers we didn t stuck even 1. I believe if a grouper dies in the whole and leave it there, one had done the worst thing in his life, first he kills a nice fish like that for nothing and second that place will be empty for ever.
That s why i don t like sharing groupers
For other white fish I believe that if it is less then 40mtr which we don t reach that depth all the fish will be migrating so we do not harm the see so I don t hesitate to give places
Can anyone give me his advice, am looking in buying a fishfinder and a gps, shall I get a conbined one (combo) or separate, is it simpler to use a separate? I was going for a Hummingbird 535 and a handheld Gps, comments please..........
Check out Raymaine A series. Serious equipment, and special prices for forum members. Speak to Matthew at RLR, and get a special forum discount
If you had to choose would you go;
FURUNO GP1650WF
Lowrance LMS-527
Raymarine A Series
Love to hear peoples choice
LMS 527 is now obsolete and has been replaced by HDS5.
Does the HDS5 take fishing charts or just navigation charts?

As I said, check out the 'A' Series from Raymarine. They come in 3 sizes and formats. Either as a GPS chart plotter or fishfinder combo equipped with HD digital fishfinder capabilities. With the A70, you get pre loaded charts and an internal GPS antenna. Go to RLR, ask for Matthew - Display your forum membership card, and you'll get a discount. Else, PM either me or Skip, and we'll make sure you get a discount.
moonwalker where do u get fishing charts???
joe how dep would the raymarine see with 600w transducer as with my lowrance i saw 800mtrs and the bottom was crystal clear, I was doing 6 knots searching the bottom contours........i forgot to take a screen shot grrrrrrrrrrrr
Can't answer that question Tony, as I am not aware how deep this particular fishfinder can go too. What I do know is that I use a Furuno 620 coupled to an Airmar B477VL 600w transducer and the best reading I got so far was 635m.
Which lowrance are you referring to?
hds5 or hdsx5 as one of the above is finder and gps
The Garmin 520S has Nav and fishing charts. Fishing charts give much more detail although they still lack accuracy (same as nav charts).
i have the garmin 182 its 10yearsold now. It gives practically the same detail as the lowrance one with contours and depth markings. i have the atlantic blue chart for computer and its the same as the gps. is that the fishing chart or is there something else
No fishing charts are something else. You get countours every 10m not every 100m as on Nav charts. They cant be opened on Mapsource afaik.
who are the fishing charts made by. Is it Navionics.......or is it exclusive to Garmin
No idea maybe someone else knows more.
The Garmin G2 charts are what Moonwalker is referring to, available only in preprogrammed cards for newer garmin models. Rumors are that a release on cd is in the works but it is only a rumour. Read more about it here.

Thanks guido - that explains better. What is needed is a new Mapsource that can read directly from SD card.
So back to my question - Can the HDS5 read G2 charts?
Yes what we need is a version of mapsource that can read the g2 charts from sd card.
No G2 charts work only on compatible garmin units.
Navionics Platinum charts are purported to have detailed bathymetry charts as well as navigation charts. These charts are compatible with certain raymarine and Lowrance units to name a few.
UPDATE to my post above.
Apparently the navionics detailed charts are only available for U.S.A. waters so far.
More options coming soon for Lowrance HDS

I wonder how effective this P.O.S. is at depth over 15 metres ?
according to what they are promoting somewhere in the WEbsite or on youtube they should give perfect readings something around 100metres :-\
as soon as i get more info will post it to keep you updated.
you look excited about it fishfinder. maybe now you can catch something if you see the fish. :D :D :D
100m should be in freshwater not sea water. May be good for jigging though :)
That's the only reason i'm interested in this new feature ;D
Really need some help on what people think or what they know on deciding between if they would have a Lowrance HDS series or a Raymarine A Series.
Cheers
I bought a Lowrance HDS with a 600w tilted angle transducer. It showed the bottom clearly at 600mtrs and trolling speed of about 6knots.
i have not tried in deeper waters, and I forgot to take a screen image of the 600w trolling.
I cannot complain with the lowrance hds but cannot compare it with anything else as its the only one i have tried. they both have good customer service so that is no deciding factor.
Its up to you to decide after u have done ur homework and bargaining with the dealers.
148148 I am sure u dont need anyone to tell u what to buy as u seem to research what u need.
Good luck

If you do eventually decide on a Raymarine, let me know before hand as I can get you a good discount!....My choice is the Raymarine C90 wide...full HD, coupled to a DSM300 fishfinder module and a 1kW transducer. I'm getting that as I need to expand the equipment to the flybridge, and also netwrok to my raymarine autopilot.
Lol - everything is becoming full HD these days :)
I have the Furuno 585 with 1kW transducer and I can keep bottom up to 600m moving at 20knt. Last time I was getting bottom at 750m moving at 22knt. I get a lot of noise ofcourse at that speed but I'm interested in the bottom contours so its good enough for me.
Hi guys, I have a Garmin 520s and am pretty satisfied with it as it is pretty userfreindly. This is my first equipment of the kind and therefore can not really compare. One question I would like to ask is whether you can use the sonar at high speeds as it seems that mine is losing all the info and a screen with no info is displayed (except for the depth before losing contact). Is this normal or are there extra settings?
Can someone recommend a site / literature / articles about reading such equipment? The user manual is ok for setting and control but does not relate to the actual interpretation and maximizing its use!
Use manual range setting for high speeds. You will get some noise but you should still distinguish the bottom. Ofcourse your garmin wont give you more than 300m at high speed I think.
Moonwalker i can confirm that with the Garmin. I?ve been trying to play around with my Garmin sounder (420S) for the past month but in vain. When I start moving and reach approx 6 knots I loose the signal and the depth starts blinking with the latest depth it read. Cannot understand if that?s normal but I gave up trying.... >:( :(
For the depth reading to work properly you must not have any noise which is impossible at higher speed.
Set the range manually and ignore the depth reading. Just take note of the bottom contour. Will post a picture next time to explain better.
Hi guys,
thanks for your opinion... indeed manual control helps.... but it is very slow in regaining info and as it is a new piece of equipment I do not know if this should happen or not. I will be 'hopefully' visiting Medcomms to ask about it and also get some more info on interpreting sonar images and whatever. Will keep everyone informed on the outcome...
im interested to buy a raymarine c120w widescreen display with a 1 kw transducer.any opinions and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.thanks!
I'm getting the C90w+1kw tranducer. Talk to me via PM...
