Great idea Kev, as a shore competition I'm sure not only will alot more people get involved but also alot more members can come and watch, meet everyone etc.

Aside from a camera, this might be a good one to get on Video, and then we do some editing down to the exciting parts! Would be even better if we had more than one video camera which would give a better chance of capturing the hook ups!

If you want to relewase them all it's not a problem for me since for sure I won't be eating them. First and foremost I don't like much mullet and second it's not the cleanest sea that one will find. A fish net to keep them alive and after weighing all released. ;)

I would like to participate if you organize a mullet competition. I even can help you out in organizing the event.
By the way, if any body is interested to participate in similar competitions, we as a club, Kingfisher Sports Fishing Association, organize a leauge for members and non members. It is based on 4 events during the year. This year all 4 are fished and the title has been assigned. We are preparing next years calender and one can get all the info from www.ksfamalta.org

The date is set to 8th December,if canceled due to weather conditions we will move it on the 13th December. Both dates are public holidays.I am talking to the marina guys,so we will not have any trouble with them.Just getting permission from them.......if they tell me no i will still do it :D ;D Teams will be by 2 but o nly 1 can fish at a time due to lack of space. All mullets caught have to be released back after competition.Dont know if we are going to do a small fee or try and get some sponsors. This is on first come basis guys cause there is not that much space. If anyone has got small boats like 10 feet we will fish much better cause we can stay in the middle of pontoons without any trouble.

fishing mullet in comps is very very hard! no matter what tackle and bait you are using sometimes mullet does not seem to be on certain pegs!

it's a matter of big luck so fingers crossed. The most important thing is that the forum guys meet once again to be amongst the best friends on the island!

cu guys ...... should you like i can try get some vouchers/ sponsors.

I am in most probably with a friend of mine that is a member of the forum but still fresh new[a couple of days].My opinion is that most of the fish are realesed and if someone wants to keep a few nice fish for him if they catch, may keep them and if only one member of the team can fish I think we can do it from the pier.@ D Sargus I am from Rabat and usually fish at Chadwick Lakes for goldfish, just joking my friend.

the idea of fishing doubles is great .... although fishing mullet is not advisable for 2 to fish near each other....but nevermind it will be much better in pairs as we will have more fun!!!!!!!!

it's important and we must be sure that there are places available to fish on pontoons....so CAMKEV you must do some good homework and plan accordingly.

I think we should make a deadline so that we know exactly how many participants are to be there

I am checking with the marina, cause there was a lot of empty spaces this week but they are all filling up with new boats again. If we dont have enough space we are not going to do it.The other option is fishing from small boats next to the piers. We will stay all in line. But dont know if any of you have tender boats which you can get without a lot of trouble.Or we change plae.
Title: Re: Mulett Competition.
Post by: placebo on November 12, 2008, 20:56:32 CET
not so many places to do mullett fishing.

either MXLOKK maghluq or Birzebbuga and maybe MSKALA. The problem is that if we're going to have a lot of people fishing then for sure certain pegs might end up catching nothing....that's is mullet competition fishing.

What do you think of the pier just in front of the Busy Bee?

we can also opt for fishing MXLOKK maghluq.

the place can cater to around 20 - 30 anglers.

Title: Re: Mulett Competition.
Post by: Aab131 on November 14, 2008, 07:19:22 CET
I think the best alternative venue is Mxlokk after Msida since at Maghluq there just can only be 10 ppl fishing. It's quite small. Regarding Msida, if we like make it from Mamma Mia till the pier near Black Pier I think around 30 competitors will stay. Just an idea.

But i heard people saying that it is a very good spot for that type of fish there.  Dont know guys at the end of the day you have to decide......so the date will be 8th dec confirmed now....so we can book leave if possible.
Title: Re: Mulett Competition.
Post by: Aab131 on November 14, 2008, 10:28:59 CET
I can confirm Diplodus Sargus that at Maghluq it is filled with mullet. The only problem is that apart from mullet u find also quite a big amount of ducks and apart from that the area is closed right now since it is infested with rats and they are placing quite a lot of poison right now. For me everywhere is ok, the importnat thing is that we have alot of fun..

With regards to M'scala I think it wouldn't be that productive as I am always fishing in Marsascala near the used to be Jerma palace but I drive past the port & you always see fishermen there at this time of year & all they catch is very small fish including mullet ( do not know how they can keep the fish as it is a waste unless they feed cats with them ) always small , I can not remember when I saw someone catch a deacent size mullet. The only thing they do sometimes catch is xilep all weather dependant.

Title: Re: Mulett Competition.
Post by: mulett75 on November 17, 2008, 16:38:36 CET
Presently the only place that we might get a fishing session for mullet is at San Gorg in Birzebbugia. This year we have done 4 compettions for mullet at Marsaxlokk and the catches were not very good. By the way we always release the fish caught. No exeptions. I wish that this competition will be on catch and release basis. I can offer to bring over all neccessary basic things, such as pegs sacle etc..

Post by: skip on December 08, 2008, 19:07:01 CET
Well done to the four teams who took part today, was great to see you all fishing. Not being a person who does shore fishing I certainly noted that you guys too have alot of equipment and technique and the way you are set up plays for more of a role in this type of fishing than offshore. With the limited number of fish around port area's this certainly was a challenge for all those taking part.

And at the end after the photoshoot and filming from Shanook all the fish were released.

Well done Charles for keeping this one going and taking charge to make it happen. I just went through the posts from the start and there was alot of enthusiasm from several people, I counted at least another 6 some of whom said they were six teams, but who then went all quiet when the date approached and didn't attend. Perhaps something came up or perhaps they decided the venue was too far to go to, but it was disappointing if that's the right word to use that those who started off this then didn't take part!

Still it was a nice day and even nicer to see teams out taking part in what they enjoy doing.

?Farka? : The best mullet bait secret.

"Method:

First and foremost the bread roll has to be the type rolled in snail shell form, one which has been formed in the shape of a snails shell. Fresh and cooked at the bakers, place the fresh roll in luke warm water and let the roll absorb the warm water, one can also use warm milk. Once soaked remove roll from liquid and without damaging the roll gently squeeze the roll between your hands slowly and gently removing the access liquid. Open out the dough to its original shape before its was formed into a snail like roll. This should look like a long sausage form length of dough. Prepare a dry towel and wrap the dough into the towel gently removing more of the liquid absorbed by the bread. Remove from the first towel and wrap into a second towel, leave roll wrapped in towel, place into a plastic bag and put into the refrigerator over night. The result will be a long length of stringy bread, with your fingers pick and pull a short length of this bread and hook it onto your hook as you would hook a worm. Leave some extra length hanging below the hook. The bread becomes very rubbery like when left overnight in the fridge and is presented excellently in the sea. Use the remaining liquid \ milk to add to your ground bait.

Try this, it really works well, as good as if not better than fresh sliced bread pinched on the hook. Which by the way is my second best option. It takes a while to get it right but once you get used to it you will not go back to anything else.

Very good explanation rammx but it's a bit complicated this...What you can also do is buy a french sliced bread (tat toast) and either soak in some water and press on a dry cloth..then cut into small strips and leave in fridge overnight or else do this without refridgerating overnight (On the place where you would be fishing) ..then roll the strips up with your fingers and pass the hook trough it. good luck

Immaljati in english is woven!....but i don't think this applies to what you were trying to express here.  try elaboraating further what you mean.

The type of bread they are refering to is made from more than one strip of dough, usually three. They are woven (maljati) just like girls do with their hair. The loaf resembles a braided line when finished. The baked bread once soaked can be, with a bit of patience , un-woven into the original rolls of dough. These can be used as bait once processed as mentioned above.
