Post by: King on December 04, 2008, 10:56:16 CET
I'm thinking of buying a 19ft dinghy but im confused which sort of trademark i am going to choose. My Dad told me that the Avon are the best. Others told me that Zodiac is good as well. Or flyer!

Avon were one of the original Dingy manufacturers from way back when, later followed by Zodiac who many saw as a copy. For years they were the two mainstream manufacturers but now the market has exploded with lots of different manufacturers.

I would say it's very much down to your budget as Gianni said, Avon and Zodiac are still premium brands and you will pay alot more for that!

If you are looking for a new rib of that size, they are very expensive as ganni and skip said.
if you are looking for used ones you might find them much cheaper.
when you are buying a used rib always take it to a rib repairer to check if it needs service. I had 2 zodiacs and a maxxon rib. The first zodiac i bought looked very good but after 2 months using it, it begain to loose air. i've took it to a dinghy repairer and it wasn't worted to repair. He told me that zodiac are very good but the one i had was made in spain and only the ones made in france are good. Then i bought another zodiac. it was very good but i've decided to change it and bought a new maxxon which is very cheap in price and till now im happy with it. :)

And is it more worth it to buy it from England rather than buying it from Malta! :-*

a few tips i use a maxxon 450 with tohatsu 30 2 stroke
fuel consumption is very low top speed is 30knots with one person 25 with 2 and 18-20 with 3 pax
2 pax from qawra to ramla l hamra and back with a few stops uses 6-8 litres petrol
the larger the rib the larger the engine the larger the fuel costs.
a new maxxon rigid hull is about lm 1550 and four stroke 30 lm 1650 trailer about lm 300-500 total cost lm 3700 for a new one
second hand about the same size 1500-2500 complete
second hand dinghy only 600-1000 but you still need engine and trailer

a large boat is always nice but also comes with more problems and expenses
so think long and hard before buying and do a lot of research and go out with some friends who own these dinghys and get their opinion you might be surprised (ps  there are alot of big dinghys for sale for one reason they are expensive to run)

If you're buying a Maxxon buy from here, what's the point from the UK? If you're spending Lm15K then maybe if you get a good deal abroad. During your warranty period here if you have any issues, the dealer is local to sort them out, so no worries.

You buy it, you use, and depending on how hard and how well you look after it, it will last u X years. They aren't by any means at the top end of the scale but very worth it for the money. On a 19 foot you want a 90hp engine so u have to factor that in too, plus trailer etc

it might be more worth it to buy the boat from here as aftersales goes if you buy the boat from uk and lets say 2 years down the line you need to repair or replace a tube under garantee. your local dealer should help you out.
but some times if it is baught from an other country they turn a blind eye.
if you liked the boat tell nicole of mecca that you are in the forum and ask for a better price  ;)
you might never know it might work ;D
