Fly fishing is a fishing technique with a special rod and reel, where the fisherman starts flicking the line with a small fly (lure) in the air back and fort like a wip. When he gets the fly to where he wants it to land in the water, he lets it fall and starts retreaving it back.
Its used a lot in rivers and lakes, but is also used in salt water. This technique has been used for ages, First rods where made from solid strips of bamboo, individually cut tapered and glued together. Nowadays the rod material has changed a lot.
The Reel used for this type of fishing is different from what we usually use. It is situated very close to the butt end of rod. It is like a drum with a small handle attached directly to spool.
Its not a common way to fish here in Malta, but I know that Simon-G has been practicing it for a long time. It is somthing worth seing.

Hello Members

When I was in Malta last September/October, I took my Fly fishing gear out with my cousins and caught a few Lampuki as well as other species whose names I do not k :)now. I fly fish regularly in the UK. It makes for good sport and the Lampuki seemed to like the lures that I used.
Cant wait to try it again next time I am in Malta

Regards

I can imagine lampuki woul go for a fly!! Must be awesome to catch one on a fly rod!
Ive only done a bit of fly fishing in the uk for trout and salmon (supposedly we didn't get any salmon!) it was fun! I was talking to someone there who had gone fly fishing in cuba for bone fish..now that looks serious fun!!  ;D

I once3 saw a guy who broke a record By using a fly rod to catch a sword fish. The fish wasn't a monster, but it was quite a chalange.

I was fly fishing from the jetty in Marsascala last year, & people going past in boats were looking at me as if I had escaped from the asylum! :o :o :o
I caught a small bream on a sunken lure, & some mullet on a small white nymph (which looked like a maggot or small piece of bread), fished on the surface, it was great to see them take it, then strike before they could spit it out again! ;)

guys, some few days ago i met a guy who practices fly fishing in Malta.
he taught me some tricks and i am sure this kind of fishing can produce in malta.

but...always as maltese we have better and much productive methods than fly fishing. example ....garfish can be caught much frequently than using a fly.

it also applies for small mullet! there are far better ways than catching the odd one on a fly.

i use some kind of flies which i do myself for trolling kahlija and have found such lures very good.

also the ones used for trout and salmon are very good.

i know that some time ago there were foreigners who tried succesfully fly fishing for albacore and also amberjacks but you have to be very patient!!!!!

Placebo I can see I am going to have to educate you to the fly, spinning & bait fishing may be more productive, but fly fishing is the true mark of an angler :D
As the old saying goes "football is a game for gentlemen played by ruffians, Rugby is a game for ruffians played by gentlemen", fly fishing is much the same, its the ultimate angling experience! ::)

this x2  ;D
Presenting a fly just right to get a 'take' needs a perfect cast technique (which i dont have 100% of the time  ::)) and its very rewarding when you get it right and get a fish!
As placebo said there are more productive methods to catch a greater quantity of fish which is fun sometimes, but catching a good fish on a fly..is awesome  ;D
Hopefully if the lampuki don't do the same as last year (and after getting one on a surface popper finally!) this time id like to try catch one on a fly. ;D

Unfortunately Placebo & MartinB fish for their stomachs ::) On the other hand my stomach is big enough already :-[ (thank you very much), so the thrill of the "take" is greater than the smell of the frying pan! :D
So I shall be "fluff chucking" (as we call it in UK) when I come out to Malta next month, to see if I can catch something else, I really fancy taking the fly rod down to where we caught those garfish Placebo, I bet a garfish would really give a good account of itself on a fly, I might take the fly rod with me when Redbus9 & I fish Marsoxlokk at night, I can catch some mullet on the fly, while we wait for that "monster" to grab hold of our huge baits! :o

:) Not really mate if i fished exclusively for my stomach then id buy a boat and put down nets!
I only keep what im going to eat the rest goes back alive i assure you! Also i don't keep under-sized fish..even ones which are abundant like 'cudas

Hallo,
I am a flyfisher from Germany and will be the next week on Gozo, at Xlendi Beach. Do you guys have any advice for me? Maybe somebody likes to join me and we can have a nice day at the water or share a boat for fishing? I have heard that the reef in front of Xlendi should not be so bad. Is that true and came some fishes into the bay? By dusk or by dawn?
Thank you in advance for your replies. In return I will share my casting experience if we meet.

Greetings
                          Joachim

white trout flies will do great  :-*there is a nice shoal of barracudas around that piece of rock you mentioned but it is a hot spot for divers ....... you can also have some fun inside swimming zone but beware of people swimming in the area ..... try also the floating bread fly if you ever used it maybe good for some mullets inside the swimming zone just under the Churcill Restaurant in the corner .... best time is when people are leaving the bay from swimming ...... at night the bay is clear and you can fish ..... you can see some big predators lurking around in the lights in shallow waters ... have fun and enjoy .... the place is so relaxing

As far as I know, one cannot fish inside swimming zones, but I stand to be corrected.

Flyfishing for Barracuda is quite common in the Bahamas, can't see why it should not work here.
Title: Re: fly Fishing
Post by: Ruzett on August 26, 2014, 09:35:40 CET
The type of barracuda in the Bahamas is different from the one we have here in Malta. Their feeding methods are different too, here they don't usually jump out of the water to catch something but rather prey on small fish a small distance under the water's surface.

That is actually the same way the bahamian cudas are feeding. They neither jump out of the water to feed.

OK then, but I'd rather stick to feather lures from the boat and plastic lures from land.
