Sorry to dissapoint you fish noob, but the last fatal shark attack by a great white in the Med, happened off St Julians a few years ago, he was a clergyman from the UK on holiday with a "male friend" ::) who was watching him from the shore, he swam well out early one morning, & ended up as breakfast for a great white.
There is a fish restuarant in St Julians with a photograph of a local netsman with a great white he caught in his nets, which if you had a pair of overalls to fit, could have gone to work instead of me!:o
I wont be swimming in the sea in Malta, & I wouldn't like to be in a boat that sunk! ::)

blueskip i think that accident didnt happen happen in st.julians but at st.thomas bay i think it happened more than 40 years ago. one of the bigest great white was caught near filfla. BTW last summer i was on a boat that sank. we were 17 miles out and stayed in the water on a 6ft dingy for 7 hours 4 of them in the dark. there were no sharks just once a fish came to the surface maybe an alunga. go to swim at ghadira you should be safe there and there are always a lot of people swiming if there is a shark you have to be unlucky if it attacks you. :D  :D

i think we have gone of the subject, it was about using animals as bait, by the people on an island called reunion,(no idea where it is) it is also a petition that has been signed by people all over the world, including many maltese. lets face it you dont get atacked by many things in malta, jellyfish and timeshare touts are about the deadlyist.

Although the fact of using live cats and dogs is very disturbing to me, let us not look to far away:

We do hook live worms through their behind on a hook as bait!

We do hook up live fish and trawl them, to catch fish!

Got my point!!!

No disrespect ramio but you're comparing the proverbial Hass mal Bass

I don't agree with you Freeman. As I said, don't take me as in favour of barberic acts as mentioned above, but really it all depends from which point you look at it.
Cats and dogs are considered as pets for us, just like some people wouldn't dream of eating rabbits as they have them for pets. Lots of people in different countries use live bait to catch bigger prey. It has been done since man started organising hunting.
Any slautering of live animals wether its for food or bait will be considered cruel by some person or other. Some practices have been gotten used to, others are not.
Live baiting is cruel in any way its practiced. Put yourself instead of the bait! being a worm, small fish, frog, bird and so on.
Killing live feed for food is the same.........but what we do, it has to be done, or else we all go veggies.

Granted, all you said is true but still one cannot possibly compare a dog to a worm mate, no matter the country he's coming from.

x2
Although its also true that in some countries (oriental in particular) cats & dogs are little more than a tasty meal, but even then at least they will get a relatively clean/painless death!!
As oppossed to having a shark hook jammed through their nose (i saw the e-mail in question & signed the petition) and being mauled by a shark or a marlin..B*****ds is too nice a term to describe these "people"  >:(

Really but alot of the South African coast is full of sharks! Especially during the annual sardine migration ! why the hell would they need to use a dog as live bait? A**holes!

I agree 100% with you Martin, to do something like that to an animal is unbeleivable, more and more to a dog, the man's best friend!!!
The killing of an animal should be quickly and humanely as much as possible.
