Post by: spearerr on April 22, 2009, 15:27:10 CET
Is a memetic siut really effective?

Personally i never saw any difference , just as long as it is not a high lighter like the ones tourists wear for SCUBA  , its ok for me , i had green, black, blue and black, black and grey , red and black they where all ok .  I cocentrate on the fit and the smoothness of the suit rather then the color.

thanks fabrizio! i have an omer ocean mimetic and when i settle down on the bottom i see that you need to have thousands of colours to be fully mimetic

I believe that if one stays motionless, one blends with the surrounds.

Two years ago I went spearfishing (quick dive) without a suit . I only had an orange T-shirt and grey shorts plus flippers and mask.
I thought I was not going to catch anything. But believe me although I did not have my usual gear I managed to catch 5 nice sea breams!

So my conclusion is that it doesn't matter what you are wearing but your approach.

you are all right after all the sea bed is covered in hundreds of different colours.

Currently in Cirkewwa just under the madonna there are some nice multi coloured corals, sponges, grass, starr fish, rixxi, etc on the vertical wall.  Multi coloured.  Just imagine their is always a nice grouper there easily approachable even with the highlighter one's.

Well these are used to us mamals.

I have to beleive that a little difference it still makes, although I never had any mimetic ones. But this is only valid for shallows.

Another thing is whether the fish was hunted or let us say a newbie. (jekk huta kelliex xi tir fuqha jew ghada kemm tfaccat fil-post)

I think that during a good aspetto a mimetic suit helps you to blend more with the surroundings. For example wearing an Omer Ocean mimetic will really come in handy if you dive deep and in open waters. I still beleive that it helps having a mimetic suit. Just my 2 cents. I personally use an OMER Mimetic Brown Wet Suit http://blueh20.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/omer_wetsuit_mimetic_med.html which colours I really like.

something to add is that sometimes fish tend to be very friendly and sometimes they tend to have seen the devil.

Some months ago we were diving at Mtahleb.  There is a reef at 50meters and we saw a very nicely sized grouper easily approachable.  Yet the next day we re-went to the place and saw the same or a different grouper in similar sercumstances that saw the devil when saw us.

baghira we were not spearing neither day.

Mtahleb is an excellent fresh water cave site.  I repeat fresh water cave dive.

I did not mean that.
It could have been someone else. Fish won't recognise you for sure.

What u mean freshwater cave dive! I did not get this one.

In summer I will take you mate.

There are caves but full of freezing fresh water.  Fresh water seeps to the sea.  Salinity is greately reduced.  One can surface in a couple of these caves and even have a drink.

To my knowledge it is the only place in Malta to have such caves.

They are not very big maybe 2 meters deep and one can immediately notice the fresh water due to the termocline.

they start from 5 meters and some are at 25 meters.

you are in the sea ok, but then there are caves were fresh water leaks through the rocks/cliffs.

One can do some small penetration inside them.

Anyone is welcome to see where they are although they are not difficult to find.

They are exactely under the parking area , where the people with the rods stay.

been there couple of times
never noticed them. Do you go from land :o !! or by boat ;D

They unique characteristic is that vegitation is greately reduced due to less salinity but something unique to experience.  Also there is not one but many some small some larger.

In fact even the busuf dont stay there.

At the place we met last, whilst turning to your left there is a massive boulder starting from 1 meter and ending in 10/12 max and an other smaller boulder that hide the entrance to a big cave.  The tunnel entrance is maybe 5 meters long so please be careful since it is dangerous.  Once inside but one can easily surface.  I mentioned this cave because Popeye is a highly frequented area and this cave is well hidden and I do not want any of our members to be in trouble.

It is not an easy dive neither by boat nether by land but can be done either way.

got a go today will answer anything else tomorrow.

By land you have to go down from the top (parking) till the sea with equipment and the way down is slippery.  Also I hate going up since you will be tired

got it.
I have been down the steps couple of times at Migra Ferha.

And I have been for a dive a week before in the cave mentioned. I did not have enough light so we decided to head backwards, but I was amazed how big it is. I will definitely check it out some day with anough light, and some cave reel.

Guys regarding this topic.
Make sure that whenever you buy a proper suit, you buy a good brand.
One that has been tested, and reviewed.
Do not do my mistake to buy a new one on the market, although it seems to be the best in the world.
I bought one, and costed me ......................... Glue went, ink also, bad fit, uncomfortable, not according to description etc etc etc and never ending.....

So take my advice.
And if need, ask those who tried various suits.
