Title: Knives
Post by: mellieha on April 23, 2009, 18:24:08 CET
Guys I want to ask about knives.

At the moment I have an unbranded knife that is serrated from one side and like a blade from the other.  This I store with my weight belt.

I was thinking of buying an additional one for safety that I strap to my hand.

What do you comment guys?

Thanks

I do not recommend the one I bought, I  strap it to my arm but keeps slipping down. Try to find one that holds well.

Is it the type/style you don't recommend or more the make/model Spnotta?

I recommend the type/style... a knife attached to my arm saved me many a time from disused fishing lines/nets and also secured badly speared fish. Personally I find it more handy on my arm.

I would be foolish to make any negative statements on the knife model I own since the respective knife model is not specifically intended to be worn on the arm.

I use the omer mini laser for my arm.  I find it as a very good blade, small and practible.  make sure you buy it with the rubber straps and not velcraw (velcraw slips).

The old models do  (the one with velcraw straps), but they modified the straps and made them of rubber (like weight belts) and they dont anymore.

I have an Omer Laser one http://www.omersub.com/ing/laser.html#.html .... this I keep with my arm handle facing downwards using 2 x rubber straps. The only negative side of it ..... it Rusts  :( ..... but recently I cured the blade with rust converter and till now all is ok. Blade is very strong and sharp.

I also have Omer laser, and keep it facing downwards, but it keeps slipping. :(
Never had any rusting problems with it...I rinse it with freshwater and dry it after use.

I guess something must be broken then .... it's either the pocket side slots or something from the knifes mechanisim.

You misunderstood, the knife does not slip from the pocket, but the whole thing (knife, sheath and bands) keep coming down my arm. I tried tightening the bands more, but I had problems with blood circulation in my arm. I will try to replace the thin rubber bands with rubber from a rubber belt.

Oh I understand ...... sorry about that  :-[. I never had problems with it slipping but you're right about the blood circulation thing.  What you can try doing is to break off the seperator from the knife pocket (the one underneath) and maybe utilise the whole width of the rubber belt  ;)

we use the Mini Mundial Dagger

It has to Velcro rubber straps, 1st its very easy to wear it, 2nd we really give it lots of work, and 3rd and not less it does not make noise while doing aguato at the bottem. As for rust mine doesn t have but can say that I use it everyday so even if it rust I cannot know.

I think that dive systems can supply only the Velcro rubber straps so can put all types of knifes.

For safety reason I will prefare to have always 2, one on my left hand and the scond on my weight belt from where I can reach it from both hands

The knife is this one used in this pic. (http://maltafishingforum.com/talk/gallery/142_04_04_09_11_00_23.jpeg)

I have a knive like the one Emic mentioned and I find it very sharp and handy.  I have it always attached to my leg.

Small comments from my end. My 2 cents.

As to what seahunter said. I do not agre for a knife on the leg. Too hard to reach for spearfishing. I second emic for maiking use of 2, one on hand and one on belt. I do use a similair knive attached to the weightbelt.

I also use the minilaser. It is very comfortable and I have the velcro straps. I found out also that it slips, but 2 min. DIY job, and done. Just cut off the velcro and sew a pice of black rubber (used for sewing Underwear, commonly found from haberdashery stores (do not know if i spelled it right) :P) It does a perfect job, not too tight, and does not fall off. better than the new rubber straps which I find too hard also. This knife is really comfortable.\
Two drawbacks of this knife:
1. not the fact that it rusts, (since on its label there is written that it rusts), but not sharp as others.
2. The plastic makes some noises when doing aguato, if hit to the rock. I would have preferred if its cover was a bit rubberised.

Having said this, I still use this knive, and until now, I found no better one, made for this purpose.

Guys

Thanks for the help.

I was thinking of adding a knife to mu arm because I thought that If i got entangled there are two things to do.

Take of weights and cut with a knife the problem.  The issue was all here.  If I needed to take of the weight belt and thus the knife what should I do then.  And that is why of the 2nd knife.

As what regards to tying it to the leg I feel that any obstact from the waist downwards is all hazardous.

Thanks

Guys

Adrian

Use to keep the knife with the belt for along time , but now i m keeping it with my left arm for these last ten yrs which i found much more practical . I would  not even considare it on my leg.

Granitu, If you try a small Knife (something like the minilaser)  I'm sure you'll change your mind.   8)  Although as mentioned before, it needs to be washed after dives.

I m sure if you ll give  it try you ll change your mind granitu . you just need to sew two pieces of rubber used for clothes about 2cm thick and off you go.
