http://maltafishingforum.com/talk/index.php?topic=1592.0
28th June.
Any regulations already stipulated ??
No of rods ?
No of lures ?
No of crew members ?
etc etc
Chris 8)
To be released very shortly Chris, most of the info is at hand we just need to finalise a couple of matters.
But in a nutshet, no restrictions on the above (rods, lures etc) and crew members will be dependant on the safety capacity of the boat.
Trolling Artificial Lures, Trolling Live Bait, with or without downriggers / planers, Jigging, Popping, chumming and chunking will all be allowed.
LONG lines are NOT permitted, this will strictly be a rod/line or handline Albacore competition.
So I'll finally see THE GAFFER fully deployed in action !!!
hehe
Chris 8)
We need more boats participating. This is the 1st Alongi MFF competition organised by this forum, and we managed to strike a deal with Mr. Fisherman to get it aired on National TV. I know there are alot of members out there who have a boat and go out during the alongi season. So join in, lets have some fun. Also, encourage your friends to join in. they are all welcome.
I will be renting my boat for the competition! :D As i am not going to be here.Skipper will be big boy! 8) If anyone wants to join let me know ;)
jiena kev!!!!!!! i'll take care of bigboy for you... he'll take me to the fish, and i'll hook 'em up :D
ejja mela bigboy or robby017. register your intent to participate on the other thread. Remember guys, this is the 1st Alongi fishing competition organised by the MFF, and it will be aired on National TV. Strenght is in numbers. the more we are, the more fun it'll be.
Great calendar guys! keep it up! I would like to attend the Alongi competition but i'm not geared up to fishing from a boat, esp. Alongi.
@ Gaffer, i cannot apply myself, bigboy is the skipper, and if it pleases both camkev and bigboy i'll be part of their crew. (If this happens, all the rest of you give up as my lines are magnets to albacore... LOL ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D )
thats what I want to hear Robby. Competition is healthy. However, although I haven't announced my crew yet, the crew for The Gaffer is already set. We have divine interaction. Probably we'll name the Team ' The Preachers' ;) ;) ;)
See you out there with bigboy
Fingers crossed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ... And 'Amen' to the preachers.... Cos I prefer the lures i prep up and create myself to the ones (lures and feathers) on the market, each one is unique and none of the fish would have seen them before.
Hope to see you out there!
Ok boys then riviera will be skippered with bigboy for the competion !!!
Up till now its me, maltembu and robby :)
Fava int al mijej haha????
ejja ha namlu t shirts guys.......... lol.... Team Riviera
The Intimidaters ahjar :P
u're the skipper
i would love to take part, but honestly, i would not have a clue, and thats the truth, so good luck to all.
mike get a crew man with u who knows what to do and how. That way u learn apart from having fun with the forum
Enjoy it guys.
It will be god fun.....it seems.........
Competition rules and info added on first page of this post and on the Notice of intent.
Sorry guys for posting in another page. I'm in, with Bigboy.
see you.....
You know it's going to cost you 300 euro a day....i told you i will be renting it ;)

I am interested in participating, however there is one problem!! it is too much for me too travel all the way down to B'bugia for the weigh in from the Northe sides, i measured the distance and it is more than 50km all the way back to St pauls bay!!
just a suggestion: cannot the weigh take place at Ghar Lapsi or Wied iz Zurrieq?? that way it will be mid way for both sides of the island
Hi Ganni,
It's a valid point, the issue I'm afraid is having a location that is easily accessible by car with parking and at the same time good for boats to come in and wait to be weighed.
Logistically it's very hard to have two weight in finish points, whilst it would have been nice to have one up North as well, it is already a challenge trying to find 3 people to help out with the 1 finish location.
We are trying to accomodate people from different locations by having 3 different start points including one up North, and given how most people will troll for Alungi near or South of Filfla it then isn't very far to B'Bugia to finish.
I would then recommend going up the east coast to return home, especially as you can take on fuel if needed from M'Scala or the fuel barge near the AFM base.
The return distance is around 27km or just under 15nm from B'Bugia jetty back inside Xemija. 50km or 27nm would be all the way around the West Coast which is much longer.
For sure it would be nice to have a second finish point on the West Coast much further up north near the start point........but we would need another gazebo tent, weighing scales and at least 3 officials which I think will be hard to arrange?
can't promise anything, but i work till 1 on sundays. i could help for the weigh in at bbugia if you like but after 1. just in case you need a helping hand
Thanks Granitu, would always be nice to have people come over as the competition nears an end :)
no problem skip, i would be in the area so it is not really a concern. just tell me when(time) and i can be there
If I do not come with anyone on a boat for trolling I will be comming to help skip. I just need to confirm with a friend of mine for the boat. If not I am an officer 24 hours a day, and I can be that also for the competition.
P.S. What refreshments will we have vodka, tequila, and spanish dancers??? :P
guys, did we mention the number of rods and lures that one can use during the competition??
Kris, Have a look at the rules governing this competition. There is no limit on the number of rods/lures that can be used. here is the link, the are attached to the 1st post. :)
http://maltafishingforum.com/talk/index.php?topic=1679.0
In my opinion i think there should be a limit... i mean, some boats can manage to troll 7 lines whilst other can only use 2-3 lines at once... thus resulting in an unfair advantage over the smaller boats... just my opinion..... :-\
Get a bigger boat!!! ;) :P :P :P
I disagree with you robby17 on boat size being the limiting factor for spreading out more then 2-3 rods/lures. The Gaffer has a 10'2" transam (thats over 3 mtrs), and without the use of outriggers, you would only manage to troll 3 lures, thats one in the middle and one in each of the corners. The deciding factor is outriggers.
I manage to deploy 5 lures in the spread with the use of outriggers. There are a number of outriggers available for small boat setup. So the size of the boat in this case is not a determining factor.
All national and international rules do not stipulate a rod/lure limit in Trolling tournaments
ok... np.......
Robby taqlalix trouble mal gaffer pls :P
and another thing rob with 5 lures out in the water there is more chances of tangles, and with less lures u can make tighter turns.
There is another factor that effects the competition rather than number of rods its the boat speed. If u are fast u arrive before and leave after the others giving u more fishing time. but those are the rules and one has to either take them or leave them. Its a competition and one competes with what he has and make the most of it.
Good luck to all
The number of rods thing has come up in the past.....whilst it's true that The Gaffer can deploy the most number of rods, most likely he will still only be fishing with a total team of 4 including skipper. Only one person can be on a rod at any one time so even if he gets strikes on more you will most likely lose them as someone still has to be on the wheel.
Whilst more rods = more lures which means more of a surface commotion, smaller boats with less rods can use spreader bars and daisy chains to achieve a simialr effect whilst having less tangles and tigher turns as shanook pointed out.
This is a friendly competition between us all.......no league tables etc and if enough people feel that next year we need to ammend the rules or add things in we'll address that accordingly and taken them into consideration.
Btw last year DJS beat The Gaffer and he only had 4 rods out :) Well done Dave!!
By having 3 lines in the sea you can still catch a good ammount of fish ;)
I have no problems with larger boats deploying a lot of rods. If they have the space and equipment then why not. Come on guys this is only a friendly competition :)
I have in mind of having 3-4 lines in the water. Not more though.
Guys... it was just a suggestion.... + this is the first fishing competition i am ever entering so, please try understand my competitivness... Can't wait for the competition to start and to be out there to enjoy the day to the full with all the competitors and most of all the team i am part of.
Suggestions are encouraged so don't worry Robby it was a very valid observation
my suggestion is that one can use the amount of rods as much as he likes.
more rods does not guarantee more fish. Sometimes this can creates complication and be less much productive to gaff fish.
by the way my boat only caters for 2 rods so that's not the point!
me and steve gb had an alongi meeting today we decided on the lures and methods of fishing. lets go!!!!
Just a note to the organizers, I think mainly SKIP and Gaffer. Since the meeting is compulsory I would have to cancel my participation in this competition because im going to be abroad days prior to the competition day. I wish to take part but I fully understand that rules are rules.
Shaftbomb, no need to cancell, just send sombody to represent you like one of the crew.
Crew?? hehe! U have no idea how lazy some people r to cross the ferry from Gozo 2 malta!
Try ask first... if its not possible for anyone to come down get back to Skip or Gaffer ux....
Shaftbomb the safety briefing should be around a week before, will you be abroad then? Otherwise pm me the dates when you will be in Malta and when you will be abroad near to the competition and we'll see if we can make an exception and give you a 1:1 briefing.
Guys as Monday 29th June is a Public Holiday, so long as most people are in agreement we can aim to use Monday 29th as a backup day in case Sunday's weather turns out to be windy....at least we have two days choice before resorting to the main backup day of 4th July.
Thoughts?
hmmm.... not a bad idea....
Bad idea...Leave it on the 4 th,i will still be away :( X tahseb Fortuna????
Ek edt kev, wara li tfajt il post... Kev zgur mhux ser jaqbel maghha din....

Monday 29th June is fine with me.
For us its ok aswell !!
Chris 8)
It's an idea but I've also heard that the Interclubs competition normally held on the 1st weekend of july will not be held this year, which means we could move our main backup day which was Sat 4th July to Sunday 5th July
The more options as dates we have the better.
Hi guys, can anyone offer me a lift to punch and judy bar in Rabat on 24 june for registration please.I live in Sliema but I could walk some of the way.If you can offer me a lift please PM me as I don,t have computer access at all times.Thank you Redbus 9. ;D
Hi Redbus, sorry but i am not coming to rabat :( I would give you a lift.
guys as you know i work on a fishing boat and we start work from monday 15th. We do not really have a schedule of work so what happenes is if its good weather conditions we are off. What happens if i cannot attend the meeting ? is it possible to send someone instead of me from the crew or maybe can i meet up with someone organising ??
Weather permitting, 3 weeks from now, Albacore competition will be on!!!!!!! :D

As the forum promotes conservation will there be a catch limit for example 5 fish per angler? Say a boat has 4 fishing then its total fish catch would be 20 fish.If a boat has 3 fishing then its total catch would be 15 fish. The winners could then be decided by the boats that catch their maximum quota of fish the total weight .of which is devided by the number of anglers on that boat. For example boat A quota 20 fish 4 anglers total weight 200 Kg average per angler 50Kg. Boat B quota 15 fish 3 anglers total weight 156 Kg average per angler 52Kg. Therefor boat B wins. Just a thought, what do the administrators think and of course the forum members bearing in mind that this event is going to be televised and we don,t want to be seen as people who take every thing that they can from the sea. :)
Good ideas but will not be implemented this time around. It seems some people have a problem/issue with the cost of fuel and don't like the idea of being restricted in any way in terms of the number of fish they catch, nor giving them away to charity. For the boats coming from the North, there is going to be one serious fuel bill and miles travelled, although 5 fish per angler is pretty generous and optimistic.
This is something that warrants further discussion and investigation for next year, shame you didn't think about it a few weeks ago :p
It's too late to be changing the rules at this stage and it's important to have a successful first successful competition which we can then build on in the future.
We will leave it up to each skipper to decide if he wants to donate excess fish to charity which personally I think is a great idea.....one has gone out and spent the fuel, can only keep the fish for personal consumption so any excess would be very well received by charity after taking care of your own personal needs and those of your family etc, but it's not something we will impose as a rule at this stage.
I totally agree with fish conservation and catch and release. The only problem that I see here is since judgement will depend on weight, which fish shall one keep to maximise the chance of winning. e.g, say I reach my quota by 9.30am, and then I get a strike at 10.00am, and this fish is much larger then what I have in the boat. Remember, the ones I have in the boat are now dead. So I can't release one of them back into the sea. What do I do?
Guys alungi have benn caught i have seen them live ! And not a bad number too...
Come on lapsi boy how much did you see???? Everyone is anxious for alunghi
I couldnt see exactly as they where covered with a xkora but i could count 5 tails for sure. I didnt have a camera as i was only there relax with some of my friends but as he came to pull the boat i went to have a look and he told me. ''isiffer trid'' which means they where pretty far out.
Yes, we could keep it in mind for the rules of the next competition

WOW well done skip........thats a lot of hard work ...........Thanks to all the sponsors......
Great Skip.... serious stuff! Thanks to you and your team for all the hard work and thanks to the sponsors!
ummmmm.... i don't know if i'll be brutly attacked for this :-[ , or you may think i'm ungrateful, WHICH I'M NOT, i mean, thanks alot to all involved :) , but, don't you think its a bit ironic to have a VHF Radio as first prize ??? ??? ??? .... when all boats must have a fully operational VHF at the start of the competition.... sounded a little ironic ??? ??? ??? .... again, i fully a greatly appreciate all that you have gone trough to make this competition what it is!!! 8)
But robby, it is always better for a boat to have both a fixed and a handheld. In an electrical failure you can only use a handheld! Don't worry but, if you win it you can always give it to me :-)
Ok... sorted... thats a valid enough reason benri... (not the giving but the electrical failure part ) LOOL ;D
PS, kemm niswew jien u bigboy.... heard we might be in the transfer market....
hey guys have been reading the tread but can?t find anything about the dates for the competition and the date for registration, and as now i can finally confirm that I will be competing as have finally got the boat at sea, you guys have some serious competition, so watch out .

You should not have a handheld as your primary radio, hence I feel totally happy to be offering the winner a backup in case of failure......in fact I had this picture of you rushing forward to grab the gaff....losing your footing, holding on to some poor sod's VHF antenna and breaking it............but it's okay coz out comes your spiffing new Raymarine 101E to the rescue. You probably won't get Malta VTS as range on a handheld is very limited, but at least someone might hear you :) hehe
Hey,better not break anything cause he will be on my boat ;) :D :)
I will attend the meeting but sadly I dont think I will be able to make it. The boat is ready for launching , everthing is ready lestejt kollox biss last week I got a call that there is a safetly recall on the engine and i cant use it. This one concerns boats who will leave from the Northern Point (Marfa).....I'm been working hard to find a way of having a second finishing location that will be run in parallel to the one in B'Bugia (ie. Open from 11am - 2.30pm) for boats to finish. The problem is mostly finding judges to man the station and also getting another set of scales......however Beachaven have kindly offered to let us use their facilities as a possible Northern finish point. This would reduce the amount of fuel and associated costs needed by boats located up North.....
If we can make this happen there will be no staggered start time and all boats will start at 4.30am meaning that if boats from the North want to finish in the south they can and vice-versa.....
The main thing is finding at least two people as judges to be located at Beachaven between 10.45am - 2.45pm......Beachaven has facilities (Bar, Food, Shade and Toilets!) which will make things a bit easier for sure and if someone wants to go for a swim they can!!
The final decision will be taken on the 24th at the Safety Briefing as this needs to be discussed with all skippers.
Still would be interesting to hear your thoughts and if you know of anyone who might want to help as a judge please get in touch.
Thanks,
Skip
It's an excellent idea Skip. It will make things much easier for us up North especially when considering the fact that you have to go all the way back to St pauls bay from Birzebbugia after a day fishing and having woken up at about 2.00am. This apart from the cost of fuel for just getting back. So please some judges volunteer....:-)
If someone can find a place for Maltembu and bigboy for the competition it will be much appreciated....cause my boat is not going to be ready till next weekend....they are both good fishermen!!!
Kev i have just Pmd robby to tell him to speak to benri. Ir there is only place for me and robby with benri then i am going to give up my place to Noel cos thats what great friends are for ;)

Hi ppl... just saw the pm - I'm sorry to hear about camkev's boat but unfortunately I'm booked now :(
Hope someone else will volunteer to take you up.
Can someone please give directions where the Punch and Judy Bar is in Rabat because I,ve never been there before, thank you.
Situations Wanted: Crew for Alungi MFF Competition: Robby017, Bigboy, Maltembu & Fava. Thanks in advance.
Sorry for you guys''''
But think positively...............so it seems we have more judges now :-X
That's true, guys would be great to have you helping with the judging/finish points, 2 at B'Bugia and 1 at Beachaven
Dont know why you are all bothering? if he enters Placebo will win it, because Camkev (who was my e/w bet) wont have his boat ready in time! :(
Adrian the coast is clear for you my son, I look forward to the reports of the "also ran's" ;D

redbus sent you a PM
I can help on land.
could someone also give me directions for the punch and judy, is it best to park in big car park between rabat and mdina, cheers.
Yes if you can find a spot! Sent you a PM with directions
or else as soon as u go up the hill into Rabat infront of BOV
Rules ammended - to reflect second finish point and competition deadline of midday and the prizes
The two finish points will be open from 10.30am - 12.00 noon given how this competition will start very early and the bite hasn't been at all hot after 10.30am. having to stay out longer would be quite a waste of fuel and I don't feel it's fair on our judges manning the finish points for them to be waiting for 1 boat that comes in at 2.30pm if all the others came in between 11-12.
This will be discussed in more detail on Wednesday at the briefing.
The registration form has been ammended slightly as well.
Just a quick reminder that you must attend the safety briefing on the 24th June 20.00 at Punch and Judy in Rabat and complete the registration in order to participate in the competition. After the quick safety briefly there will be a discussion about the event and a chance to ask any questions. The bar will be open for drinks and there will be some nibbles going around.
Parking:
After coming up the hill towards Rabat/Mdina as you go over the mini roundabout head for the road that is next to the petrol station. This goes in to Rabat up a road that leads towards the Church and the square where the police station is. At the end of this road there is a T junction, you can turn left which takes you next to the church and the police station, there is some parking further round or you can turn right and drive all the way down a narrow road which then opens up to a large parking area.
Punch and Judy
Is on the left hand side before the T junction, it's quite easy to miss as you go down stairs to get into the venue.
If anyone gets lost, call me on 99802843 or one of the moderators.
Regards,
Skip
Thanks Nick,
we'll be there for sure ;)
Guys, its very important that all skippers, or thier representative attend the briefing on Wednesday 24 June at the Punch and Judy Bar in Rabat. All competition participants are welcome to attend. The night's event will be filmed by Mister Fisherman, and Mr. Fish has kindly donated fishing tackle, rods and reels to be raffled on the night. So come along, attend the briefing, have a few beers and nibbles, and you could be in the chance of winning something too!!!!
Will be there also! Coming for the few beers! ;)
Weather Warning:
There is a good chance that we will need to postpone the competition as Malta Airport is clearly showing WNW Force 4 to 5 for Sunday which will mean we'll have to resort to our backup weekend.
Even if the wind does drop a bit there's going to be a serious established swell from all this wind that's been blowing.
We'll keep the safety briefing on Wed and keep an eye on the weather.
Not so sure about the swell, since the wind will be changing direction on Friday to SSE. However, I track 4 weather stations, Maltairport.com, windfinder, SD Weather and meteo.it. There is a 50% chance that we'll have a fresh breeze, F4 blowing on Sunday. Still too early in the week to make a solid forcast since the wind is changing direction and then back to NW. Meteo.it is forcasting a F4 to F5 NW'ly wind for Sunday 5 July, which is our fallback day. However, Monday 29 June, which is a public holiday, is looking promising with the wind veering to NE to E F2 to F3. I'd open this up for discussion tomorrow at the briefing.
Yep just wanted to give a heads up, btw backup day is SATURDAY 4th July NOT the sunday

Meteo.it is forcasting a F4 to F5 NW wind for Saturday 4 July as well. The forcast for Monday 29 June on meteo.it E F3
Umm, winfinder is stating force 2-3 for Sunday till 2 pm, keep in mind all boats will be heading in at around 11 am to be at the weighing stations by noon so the Force 4 forcasted for the afternoon shouldn't be of any serious concern for now. However, as has happened many times, its best to wait for last minute changes.
I fully agree with you Robby017
We'll definately wait guys, but wanted everyone to consider and see if they would be available on the Monday (29th) and the following weekend so that it can be discussed tomorrow.
Dear All,
First of all i would like to thank you for all participating in the safety brief. It is always a pleasure to see such enthusiasm in the local fishing scene. You are all a colorful and entertaining bunch.
I would also like to thank SKIP for giving me the honour to give MFF first safety brief. I hope i did nor bore you too much and hope that you found informative. I am very particular about it and through the years of experience at sea i have only learnt that preparation for anything that may crop up is half the measure complete to dealing with the scenario you may be involved in.
I am hoping that this briefing will become a standard in every fishing tournament held not only within MFF but within all our fishing mates in all other organisations within our shores.
Our biggest thank you is when all boats and crew return to their home base safe and sound with a smile that their fishing trip (fish or no fish) was a peaceful and happy one.
Tight Lines to all
and hope to see you all at sea soon
FIN
thanks fin.... was very informitive yesterday and it was a good briefing as a number of the things you mentioned may be taken for granted... thanks again.
If anyone still wants to register their boat but was unable to attend yesterdays safety briefing please contact me by PM or email admin@maltafishingforum.com so that I can advise you what needs to be done
THE GO OR NO GO DECISION WILL BE TAKEN ON SATURDAY AT 10.45AM LOCAL TIME AFTER THE ISSUE OF THE LATEST FORECAST - TAKING AN AVERAGE OF MIA, MALTAWEATHER AND WINDFINDER

Thanks for the briefing Fin - It was great and hopefully useful to all! A big thank you also goes to Skip & The_Gaffer & all involved in the organistaion of this event - I'm sure it's not easy! Thanks also to the spearos for offering their assistance and also to the sponsors - nice cap!
you are most welcome :)
wow guys
for being the first event organised by the MFF, It was absulutely stunning and professional.
I was so happy to see the evolvment of our beloved MFF. I love the atmosphere that the crowd provides, and that drives me to participate as much as possible.
I want to say well done to all yesterday's speakers.
Straight forward, professional, in detail, and bi-lingual ;D I am jealous about your perfect english fin..... :P
I really beleive that this forum will grow bigger and bigger, and I have high hopes bout it.
Well done guys
Where is the main jetty in b,buggia for weighing the catch please
at St Georgies bay. there is only one jetty. coming in from the sea as soon as u go past the break water pass parallel to the container wharf and keep going straight in. You go past a few large buoys (on ur right) and the jetty is right in front. I will try to scan a plan of the area later on
To All Competitors:
Given the prevailing weather conditions for Sunday 28th as currently confirmed by the 3 different weather websites, we are taking the decision to postpone the 28th......there is 1% chance at best that it will drop back down to 10-12 knots versus the 15+ that is currently forecast.
On the other hand Monday 29th is looking slightly more promising putting us in the Force 3 gusting to a light 4 territory. In the interest of the smaller boats I would rather all competitors keep on standby for Monday 29th......BUT on a positive note the long range forecasts for Saturday 4th July are looking promising with an area of high pressure due to move in to the Central Mediterranean for at least a week.
We want to have fun and we ve to stand a good chance of catching fish given today's fuel prices so I really feel (and I hope you all agree) that as much as possible we should aim for the best day.
Please would each skipper or skipper's representative if he's not only reply in this thread indicating if you are available to take part on the 29th or not. Everyone should have kept the 4th free as it was our pre-arranged backup date.
I am available to take part on the 29th .
its better on the 29th skip. we can participate
me 4th july
I think the 4th is better as the sea would have settled down a bit. And its independence day no.............
I am viewing all weather reports and on monday i think that is good
Let's have everyone confirm I am assuming 4th is good for everyone so it's the 29th I want to check about weather permitting.
ok skip the sooner you confirm the better for me
I can make it both on the 29th and 4th. I however think it's safer to go for the 4th as we must also consider the swell that's building up.
Sorry I posted in 2 areas but i wasn't sure where to post!
at the moment i am ok for both dates. with scales.
For me the 29th is a better date. According to windfinder its going to be Force 3-4.
SUNDAY 28TH POSTPONED
THE GO OR NO GO DECISION FOR MONDAY 29TH WILL BE TAKEN ON SUNDAY AT 10.45AM LOCAL TIME AFTER THE ISSUE OF THE LATEST FORECAST - TAKING AN AVERAGE OF MIA, MALTAWEATHER AND WINDFINDER
Apart from the wind I think we should also take the swell into consideration if tomorrow is actually a 4-5 all day long. What are forecasts showing for 4th?
Just hitting a Force 4, forecast at 12 knots for the 4th at the moment
COMPETITION POSTPONED TO BACKUP DAY 4TH JULY
DUE TO WEATHERConditions are showing an established Force 4 on the West Coast in the morning from 2am-8am, therefore as per competition rules we are postponing to our backup day. The wind is then forecast to drop to an F3 mostly on the East Coast, but eventually on the West Coast as well.
Postponed to Backup Day 4th July Due to Weather, where currently long range forecasts are showing an excellent weekend.
We are here to enjoy ourselves and not to rock around all day, especially for the smaller boats.
This is MIA's maritime forecast for Monday as of 10.20am today:
Monday, 29 June 2009
WEATHER: Mainly fine
VISIBILITY: Good
WIND: Light to moderate mainly North to Northwest (force 3 to 4), locally moderate (force 4) at times, becoming mainly West to Northwest
SEA: Slight to moderate becoming slight
SWELL: Negligible or low Northwest
Windfinder:
2am - 13 knots F4
5am - 12 knots F4
8am - 9 knots F3
11am - 8 knots F3
The forecast map http://www.windfinder.com/forecasts/wind_italy_s_akt.htm shows 13 knot winds 8nm+ on the West coast at 8am and this is where we will be fishing. The East coast on the other hand would have already started to calm down.
Maltaweather 3 day Forecast
WIND DIRECTION & FORCE: WNW 3-4
SIGNIFICANT WAVE HEIGHT: 1.0m
SWELL: Low NW
As discussed with some of you by phone, given the smaller boats including the camera boat, the fact we want to have fun and the current updated forecast for July 4th, it makes the most amount of sense to postpone as per competition rules based on an initial F4 for the start.
Was definately a good call to postpone. Whilst the wind calmed down at around 7am-8am it picked up again by 10am and on the East coast it was touching a Force 4 with a 0.5m swell in most places.
Further towards the west coast it was similar and The Gaffer who was out near Filfla confirmed the same.
Looking forward to Saturday
Due to the latest increases in fuel prices, will the Fuel voucher prices increased accordingly? :)
Actually I was thinking of a reduction with ppl pulling out here and there etc!!! :P
COMPETITION CONFIRMED
Unfortunatley Georgia 1 is out for work commitments !!!
Gud luck 2 all and enjoy
Chris
Sorry guys Sunday isn't and was never an option on the table as an available date....initially marked as a blackout day due to it usually being used by the Interclubs competition and other plans have been made on that day.
Next weekend is not looking good, long range forecasts show it worse than today but we'll have to see.
However, after discussion a final decision will be taken at 20.30 today after the 8pm forecast comes out.
If we do postpone we need to see about judges if the existing ones rightly so cannot make it, and EVERYONE will need to be prepared and accept that it could be around the 18th of July when we can go out in such calm weather.
Guys please do not compare today's sea conditions with tomorrow's!!
Today was a steady F4 all day, tomorrow is forecast wind wise to be a steady 3 touching a 4 by one knot which is barely a 4.
Skip isn't there a weather report service at M.I.A. where you can get an up to date detailed forecast for mariners for a nominal fee. An earlier decision will be greatly appreciated since some of us need to stock up on fuel, ice etc..
Seems the weather out there isnt that fine !!
Caution to all the competitors especially in the first hours when light will not be present !!
Good luck 2 all
skip why don't we meet up as planned near jetties and instead of postponing the competition we wait till sunrise and see how is the weather condition??? I think the weather will not be as bad as today
not a bad idea if we meet before sunrise instead of 3.15/4 and see if the smaller boats can compete it will be better. I hate to see a lot of boats not competing. its a friendly competition and the more the merrier
For us it's not worthed coming up there for nothing!I agree with you both but really i dont know what to say,i have been in contact with my crew all day and they dont sound very excited!!
Kev I suggested that evryone meets as planned. And evryone meets at his nearby jetty!!! It is not fair for you to come all the way down here if the sea conditions are bad
The thing that is bothering me is to come there on pitch dark at 3.30am!I wish to come but now we decided not to take part(me and my crew).I cannot stay(imdendel) till 4 am for the sea conditions.Hope you all have fun guys.If i dont take part i will come at 1pm at b bugia jetty to giva a hand.Another thing is that i dont have that much experience at sea so i m not going to risk anything.......I just got this message from big boy who is 12miles out......Caqliq aw man.Moderat sew qijed.Ejdilom joqodu attenti ax sa filodu zgur mhux gej bnazzi.....
Nick can I have a list of the competitors leaving from b'bugia.
We've been watching the sea from the cliffs all day long a praying that it calms down but the wind was blowing away our prayers including my swearing :-\
Gianpula will be good weather tonight so if you give up on the comp it will be nice and sunny there ;)
Kulhadd al hemm l lejla jew ???
Jien tiela ukoll !! :P
Chris 8)
mela narak jekk alla irid chris :P
Final decision on whether it a Go or No Go will be taken in a few minutes. Please bear with us.
Wind dropped tonight but forecast is steady at F3/4......the Force 4 is at the bottom end of the scale not like today......12 knots not 15-17 that it was in some places
The decision is not yet taken, however, the committee is also considering Sunday 5 July. Our responsibility is towards our members and our crew. Above all, this is a friendly competition, one which I hope will be chatted and joked and shared for weeks to come on our Forum. Can I have your thoughts as to Sunday please?...Now!!!
UNLESS EVERYONE TELLS ME IF THEY ARE AVAILABLE ON SUNDAY ITs NOT EASY TO MAKE A DECISION. Some ppl want to go tomorrow and some don't and are pulling out
I'm ok for Sunday
Should be ok for Georgia 1 aswell !!
All those for Alungi competition please post on the other thread thanks
this will avoid confusion
I should be ok for sunday,i m just checking with my crew!!
Like shanook said tomorrow or sunday looks the same..ma nafx jien ax ha niggennen!!It's the commitee who has to decide.
On sunday some of my crew cannot make it :-\ Just informed me now.
WE'VE POSTPONED TO SUNDAY BUT UNLESS IT ALL GOES HORRIBLY WRONG WE WILL NOT BE SHIFTING THE DAY AGAIN.
IF SUNDAY TURNS OUT LIKE SAT WE WILL STILL BE GOING
So how many boats are we in for Sunday?
I closed down the other PC so not sure, and still waiting for final numbers.
Don't think we're more than 15 though.
Enjoy it guys because I think this will be our first and last Offshore boat competition. It's been too much hassle and let downs to repeat, the weather has become too unpredictable.
Instead offshore boat events will become Raduno's instead.
Dont let yourself down Nick. The problem is that the weather has played dirty tricks on us. Offshore competitions are more interesting although its the first time for me. Maybe we can organize a deep bottom competition too sometime.
All of us know that its hard to set up all this together, so we understand your feeling. As from last meeting it showed up that this was going to be very professional even if not for the competition the safety briefing was excellent. Here although its a competition we all know that we do this for our hobby, so every one must understand other and help as he can.
Weather played us very bad with this one but does nt mean that we should stop doing these just for this.
Don't let yourself down Nic!the whole team of the Mff have professionly organised one great competion, even though we haven't competed, I'm sure you can feel the enthusiasum that arised!
@ skip...I am sorry if i caused any panic yesterday with the msg that bigboy sent me.But it wasnt just me saying that,a lot of members including moderators taught that as well before i sent mine.I still thank you and all the team for everything you do.Hope you will have success with the competition tomorrow.Again i am sorry ;)
Hello nic Dont let yourself down. Today i went out was very disappionted because of the wind i felt in the morning. yesterday evening i also felt the wind at 9pm and was in a yard surrounded by buildings and said shit tomorrow not good.
However i still went out to check the boat and the sea was not that bad hitting force 3. went off filfla about 12nm and not a damm thing. Trolled with the 9.8 which gave me at 1/2 throttle 6knot and consumption 5lter/ 2hr. so good luck guys for tomorrow.
guys...looks like tomorrow is going to be much better than today , let's go out have fun :) , C U out there !
all those leaving from B"Bugia tomorrow give me a pm so that I know who is competing. Will be at jetty with Ramio. If there is wind and any smaller boats want to wait till it becomes a bit more light I am willing to wait with them at the harbour opening. Let me know as otherwise I leave for the fishing grounds as soon as Gaffer signals the competition start. I will be fishing the direct south and turning to filfla on the first ridge
Anybody knows who's going tomorrow - I'm in!
I'll be at marfa 3.30am !!!
MIA Just issued the marine forecast - looks good!!!!!! :-)
didnt know which one to put it on i will be at beachaven in the morning, looking forward to it, best of luck to all taking part.
Just an update from our side . . .

So are u suggesting we have another shield or cup to see who has most fish from the guys of B'Bugia to Beachaven????????
i'm just hoping everyone catchs something tony!!! catches have been quite low recently............... i'd be happy with one (the biggest one of course) ;D
the again, i think i should have posted the latter in the jokes section!!! lol :D
yep looks like it as my friends didnt get any bites today........oh well at least we will be out fishing.....
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D cheers to that........ don't forget your beers........ and designated skipper!!!!!!!!!! ;)
