Title: hooks for paternoster
Post by: mike.d. on May 23, 2009, 10:19:18 CET
can anyone give me an idea of the size of hooks needed for paternoster rigs, to be used from shore, and i am not targeting great big fish, there is a guy in the uk makes them up, with 2 hooks complete rigs, 10 for ?6.99, he has emailed to say he will do them any size, most gratefull for advice, ;D ;D ;D

First it depands what bait you are going to use. If you are going to us warms noramally hooks size 7 or 8 with long shank. Other baits like shrimps (live) try to use hooks a little bit smaller than the shrimps

i would go for size 12 - 10 hooks and go for live worms as bait.

i think in malta you'll find the paternosters cheaper.
if you're gonna make them yourself use thin monos in the range of 0.14mm - 0.18mm

thanks for info, i just thought at 69p each, for a 2 hook rig i could get several different sizes, as for making them myself i have seen that many different ones, it would be hard to use one as a model

@mike.d I would never trust anyone to make rigs for me.You would better make them your self so you know what mono you are using(use a good one) and even for the hooks you choose the ones you like and more than that if you use different baits, lets say at the bottom you use shrimps you use a size 10 hook and the other hook you make a size 7 or 8 and use korean worms. My opinion.

have just purchased some rigs, or sort of rigs, they look ok, so any advice would be great, 1. is tal vopi with 2 hooks they look like a size 10 with a weight on the line, line is just over 1mtr in length. 2. says bottom leader by mustad, with 3 no 8 hooks on 1mtr of line, 3. is camor hi-teck, paternoster monofilament, cm90.3 arm (3 of ) but the arms are wire and quite close together, so it would mean a very short hook length, all purchased at notanic in st pauls, some of they work out a bit cheaper than the uk ones, but the main question is, have i wasted my money. ??? ??? ???

1. it is good to attach to the main line using a float and use for vopi (bogue) on a hand rod 5-7mtrs - use dough bait, shrimps or worms as bait

2. good for use with a reel rod  - attach to main leader using a swivel and use a lead weight on bottom. Use shrimps or worms as bait.

3. good for boat fishing where currents are high. Such terminal tackle should keep much more in shape in high currents. The drawback is a lot of steel wire which maybe fear fish. But using in 40 - 100mtrs depth should not be nmuch of a problem
