Title: Trolling speed for lampuki
Post by: searover147 on September 12, 2006, 16:54:46 CET
Hi guys,
what is the best trolling speed for lampuki?  And what are the best times to fish them?  I went out 4 times this year but all I caught is 2 tunnaggi and 1 cervjola.  I go near Filfla and Dingli and this year is pretty poor comparing to last year although I heard a lot of people saying that they caught loads of lampuki from the south.

I reckon everyone has their own speed etc. I troll at around 5knots without problems, sometimes slowing a little if you spot the shoal slightly off from your position. Give them a chance to get on to your lures and then go back up to 5 knots simulating fleeing bait fish. Lampuki can move very fast.

Sometimes you have to regulate your speed depending what's happening, type lures you have out etc. This holds true for most types of fish when trolling.

The ideal is the usual, dawn and dusk, though we still catch at 11am, midday etc, but the afternoon does tend to be quiet. I guess fish are just not in their natual hunting patterns at that time, so less prone to strike.

I will try to troll at 5 knots next time i go out.  I went 3 times in the early morning this year but sometimes i didn`t catch anything at all.  thanks mate.

ha ha tricky what i do is vary the speed i start at 3 knots and go up to 5 and back down and find the speed they bite at it is different every time but in the region of 5 knots you should get a bite or two .  it also depends if you are trolling in open water or near cimi if you are near cimi go slow and if you are in open water go a bit faster

Ha ha ... glad you're calling them 'cimi' again. I hated the word 'FAD' ... of course I'm assuming that cimi and FADs are the same thing, right?   ???
