To compliment the Cedros Jigging range, Okuma have also release 4 Cedros Jigging rods, two conventional and two spinning.

I shall soon be buying an Okuma 601M together with an Okuma CJ-65S reel. What are your recommendations for spooling up the reel? What assortment of jigs would you recommmend me to start off with please? I'd like to target dentex and acciol - of course other species would always be welcome :-)

NO u cannot do that Benri.......u buy the lure according to waht u want to catch the rest u throw back in the .....................well ur choice either the cooler or the seawater (in the cooler)

Bryan, you need to match the jig weight to the rod class when jigging.  Each jigging rod is classified according to jig weight.  So, if you're using a rod with a classification of 150-220g then your jig wieght should be within those parameters.  Likewsie your reel, its usless targeting detex and acciol with a 2000 or 4000 reel, the drag system will simply give way under the fight of an 8-10kg acciola.  You really need to match up everything, rod, reel, jig and line class!
My personal rig is"
Okuma cedros spooled with 50lbs braid, and terminated with 60lbs momoi diamond florocarbon leader.  Jig rod is 150-220g class.  Jig weight is 180g.

Thanks Joe. the 601M rod is a 30 - 160g; the 65s reel is in the 8000 class which should quite suit. What do you think? I'm more confused on deciding what to spool up with and what jigs to start off with.

601M or 601MH?

The CJ-65S is better suited to the medium heavy action of the 90-200g rod which to be honest is a very good range for local waters.

Spool with 40 or 50lbs braid, my current favourite is Tufline XP for price vs performance.

If you want come and have a look at the range of jigs I have....trust me less focus on the jig colour and style and like Joe said just match up to your rod.

The 601M has an ideal jig weight of 95-100g
The 601MH has an ideal jig weight of 145-150g which is one of my favourites.

You can drop to a 100g when you are slightly shallower, there's no current and perhaps the jig is smaller and move up to a 180 or 200g jig for deeper waters or days with more current.

Thanks Nick. in fact I was in a bit of a dilemma whether to buy the M or MH and the more I went into it, the more I got confused :-) In fact I'll take your suggestion and go for the MH.
I'll gladly accept your invitation to have a look at your jigs. When i have the rod and reel at hand I'll get back to you - should be in a couple of weeks! You can help me spooling up, etc... and then obviously when I get the boat ready we can give them a try :-)

benri, i'd go for an electric reel with a jigging option pre programmed.... nothing beats lazy fishing :-p

Is tufline XP available locally and any idea what length of braid will fit on the 65s reel?
What length of leader would you use?

Haven't seen it locally, but there are other braids as well, I have read to avoid Powerpro for jigging as it doesn't last.

Buy a 500 yard spool and you should get pretty close, leader choice is up to you.....but match to your main line. The fluoro will break before the braid usually, so you shouldn't need to run less to protect your braid but if you want to err on the side of caution you can.

2x length of your rod so approx 12 feet is my preference.
