Title: Amberjack HELP!
Post by: toxictuna on June 21, 2009, 18:45:24 CET
Hi all, I am planning to go for some AJs. Never tried before, so i need help. I was going to troll some whole (dead) squid. Any hotspots (in the south), type of bottom i should be looking for, depths, or different lure I should be using.

squid must be fresh as possible.

possibly try catching some early morning hours or else some sawrella.
depth - on reef edges varying from 20-40 mtrs.

hotspots - hotspot is the name of a small shop selling pastizzi in birzebbuga!

le vera toxic!

in fishing it gets to no sense if you know exactly places where to go!
it is more fun if you scout other fisherman and also experiment your own way which will make you feel the most fun of it!

fishing is a wonderful neverending learning experience.

AJ trolling is usually done with weights to get the bait down to around 20-30m which is the area that AJ like to strike. You need to go dead slow....and all I can say in terms of advice is follow the other boats doing the same thing. You will find them outside freeport and near Filfla.

As I don't do it myself I'm not sure what classifies itself as a good spot, but I imagine ridges and drop offs. In terms of how they rig up, not exactly sure but the Predapro might help for fresh dead bait.

following your advice was looking at nav charts and i think i will try xghajra .. there is a small drop ... it seems that an msella, sicca strip, vopa [live] or a metal lure, are the best from research done till now. next sat i will leave some alongi in the sea hoping to get an aj. so now i need to find some msell! Msell HELP anyone??

If you have a good fishfinder I believe you can see the AJs although I dont have experience how then look on fishfinder.

spitec that is not exactly correct. I am catching like 3 the most imsell everytime i am going out for toxictuna that will be more than enough even if u can only catch 1 imsella means 1 aj if it is passing by.

msell and MartinB:  Absolutely correct, there are alot of msell around, especially on the west coast, area uppwards of Fomm ir-Rih!!!.  And they're not small, I'd say they are the right size to troll for AJ's

if you go trolling, i saw a lot near the hofriet pens. there are some there. if you go for them extremely small hooks are essential. they are fun to catch

barra tal pastizzi xi mara bil bikkini taqbad bhalissa jew xi skater :P
