What is the best setup and what lures would you recommend when fishing for lampuki? I'm quite a newbie in this area and once the alungi season is suddenly "closed", I might as well start concentrating on setting up lines/lures for lampuki.
Benri , I ve done very good catches with feathers and imitations of squid... but I dont think it exists the lure for lampuki..they attack what ever moves close to them. I ve used different type of lures and feathers, if they re hungry they'll take anything
Yep i agree if their hungry and in the mood to feed they'll snap up just about anything! :D
benri the type of lure does not matter much its the size that makes a difference. U have to have at least 3 sets for the beginning of season, 3 sets for mid season and then u can switch to albacore lures.
the first set u can have 6 lures, the second 2 or 4 and last u troll with one as per alungi. If u are going to use the rods then its a max of 2 lures.
this is my idea I am sure u will get a lot more ideas.
If u had attended the saturday meeting at garage we would have discussed it. Try see how it goes if u need to clear something we can meet at garage I am on holidays at bugibba so a phone call will see me there.
If u want we can always pop over at ta Bormla and u can buy whatever u need from there he has a lot of different coloured lures. I swear with red/white or pink/white as well as blue/white but there are so many nowadays.

what thickness of lines do u use? how many lures do u use? a little bit of info...this is my first time for lampuki and since i have a boat i would like to catch a couple but i dont have a clue. Thanks in advance (sha)
Benri, whenever you want, we meet up and i'll show you how to set up for lampuki. best lures i find are pink , white and red/white and the custom made ones i put together myself. ;)
Last year we caught quite a few on pinns minnow, especially the purple one and blue one.
yes kev the pinns are very good but to use with rod as u can fish with one at a
time. I like to have one with 6 lures as its not the first time i had six fish hanging on.
I can already imagine you hanging out to haul them up. ;D ;D
Thanks for the offers guys. Will contact you shortly :-)
any info 4 me :)??
Ostja kev kemm andek ilsinek twil :P
why bigboy is the minnow a secret weapon that no one knows about?
Two years ago I lost a bloody expensive pin minnow bought from Anlgers centre in September to a big ass Bluefin.
Opened up my 25kgs snap swivel like a pin.....I wasn't using smaller as I didn't have with me.
Twoutes was out on the boat with me and we quickly re-rigged
perla al lampuki jien armat hekk u nassigurak li tajjeb hafna ax kemm il darba qbadt 70 u gieli ma qbadt xejn ukoll imma ax ma jkunx hemm xewka ax l bqija bhali taqbad.

line thickness beginning u can go down to .20 to .40mm and later i use .6mm all round. For main line i go with a straight .5 or .60mm and later .90mmi dont bother to have the first thicker than stepping don but u can do that if u want to ( I dont do this because when using a hand line u drop the line on the floor and the more links and joints u have the more chance of a tangle. Especially if u dont know how to grab a lampuka its a devil of a fish and very slippery, if it falls on the line u are bound to get a nice tangle especially if u have joints in the line).
When I pull a lampuka onboard I imediatly press it to my chest so it's barely able to strugle and then grab it from the gill WELL!!
You dont want lampuki all over your line !
Then the best would be to kill them , personally i bite them on the head.
QuoteThen the best would be to kill them , personally i bite them on the head.
it works !!! as i do the same!
Beware of large sized lampuki when you hold it to your chest. I did that once with a 3kilo lampuka and ended double on deck with the multiple wacking I got between the legs with its tail. I had a bruise that lasted a week, not to mention the peculiar walk I had that evening and the next day!!!
Nice experiance Ramio!!!!
Hi guys... real way is to bite the Lampuka's head////... instant death and no tangle...just a fishy salty taste.))) Bit rough but works perfect as you are also in a good position to unhook...
..... and nothing beats the taste of fresh sushi....
btw...stop your bite force when you hear the crunch..))
Lol I stop the biting when i taste the blood in my mouth, then i know its dead ;)
vampire !! ;D
10x for d info msell and shanook ;).
Just wear a glove and you can hold it with one hand without problems.
Why it seems that everyone here uses a handline instead of rod? With the rod its much more fun and you dont tangle any lines.
But with hand line it is much faster and you will catch more
I fully agree with moonwalker, with the rods it's much more fun and it is faster than hand lines cause often the lampuka falls exactly in the line ending up swearing and god knows what when with a rod just unhook the fish and back for more ;D
I personally think rods for Lampuki is nonsense .. when hooking a fish it is very important you do this fast as to keep the shoal together and not dive towards the bottom. Having two lures helps in this... and the fact that one line has a fish will help the other lure in hooking up yet another fish. Being fast is a major factor in Lampuki fishing.... u need to be fast to thorw back in..... With rod it's great fun but can somehow slow you down and therefore catches will only be one at a time....
how far from the boat do you let the lures out and do you use any weight?
@ stevea if fishfinder catches a fish at a time he will be happy. he got used to catching only a few fish everytime he goes out. :D :D :D
@ benri 18 qami is enough and you dont need weight
Busu we work everyday not like you always fishing ;D
buz jaqbad l iktar meta immur mijaw jien :)
since we have been fishing with rods, I have missed the feel of a fish striking on a hand line. No matter what, lampuki for me will always be on hand line.
If you have a thick line, its very hard to get tangled, its easear to grab, and you can always put a thinner leader. As they said further up, co-ordination between two will produce more fish and is lots of fun.
Hand lines, when operated well are by far faster.
Lures with weights usually attract the small tuna more in the lampuki season.
While we mention small Tuna, if we catch any while at lampuki do we have to release them?
yes we have to release them. mhemmx xtaghmel
my friend last night caught 2 tunas. he was fishing 1Nm further out from us. one 20kg and another 100kg. he kept the 20kg one so i think its not the same for everyone. Nahseb tafu inti busu (pawlu l gonos).
He kept them at his own risk Bigboy, season is closed for EVERYONE, that would have been an expensive tuna at several thousand euros fine
he is carrying an mfa licence
I don't know if it's true bigboy, but I heard that when you land more than 20 swords you can have 1 as a bycatch! I don't know if you heard something?
it could keep tuna as by-catch of swordfish but i dont know now but i think you still can if you have permit for swordish fishing. 2 weeks ago there were 4 tuna at the pixkerija but i dont know exactly but i will ask
Guy's take care about Tuna fishing. Season is closed and if someone get caught with a tuna on his boat, he'll get a fine of 5000 euros. I know someone who's facing charges against him right now at courts.

Kane I'll happily ask Dr. Gruppetta on Friday when we meet him BUT MFA, MFB etc the commercial and recreational season for Bluefin Tuna closed long ago, no exceptions! Malta met and overshot it's quota and even allowed some of Malta's MFA's who had long lines deployed to come in and land their catch. But this was several weeks ago.
To me if he's carrying an MFA licence it's even worse and he should be fully aware. I very much doubt he has been out at sea for the past 3 weeks and has just come in?

If they were fishing for sword fish, and tuna was caught, most probably it will be dead. Isn't that a waste to trow back in?
It does sound a complete waste, but here in the UK when quota is reached ALL "bycatch" is to be returned to the water dead or alive, makes no sense I know but they say that it deters fishermen from targetting "bycatch" on purpose!
I asked an mfa fisherman and he told me that even them cant keep tuna as by-catch. you have to throw it back even if it is dead. VIVA l EWROPA
you are wrong bus ;) It was the first thing i asked frans this year before we started working for swordfish. Tuna can be kept as a by catch if larger than 30kg
now you said it bigboy when you told him before the season started. the rules change whenever they want bigboy. it used to be like that now you cant keep it anymore. i am sure about it chalie caught one this week and had to throw i back. and so it has to be really true if chalie threw it back. better not risk it if they catch you they will make a show.
better to check with the right authorities bigboy i hate to know that some A_ _ Hole make a show with u..............

Tuna as a by-catch is set by the EU and only a certain number of community vessels are authorised to do this and even then it must come out of the countries quota which in the case of Malta has been FULLY used up. So I very much doubt your friend should have kept his tuna, but I suggest he contacts fisheries to clarify.
The begining of the year and after the season closed are very different...and the fine is ?3800 confirmed today at our meeting with Dr. Gruppetta.
Will check back on this tomorrow morning as i have to be at the market at 3am. Although what puzzles me is that i know of about 10 boats who have taken tuna down to the fishmarket after the season has closed. Apart from that often do i see tuna in the coldstore when we go to unload our catch. Last monday we were at rita fish shop in marsaxlokk to get the bait and they too had 3 fresh 70kg + tunas in their cold room.
Guys if i was wrong about what i am saying i wouldnt have opened my mouth but i am telling you the facts as they are. I think that if it was illegal then i wouldnt see tuna at the coldstore of the pixkerija.
Btw some one week after the season was closed 2 fisheries officials came abord the boat to check that we do not have any fishing gear for tuna and asked what will happen if we hook onto a tuna. His reply was that it can be kept.
U Gruppetta fxi moza jifhem mhux fis sajd !!!!!
DR Gruppetta should first answer to the local fisherman to the question of why was half of the maltese quota sold to foreigners !!!!!
Wake up guys and look at the facts
bigboy maybe you are right. 2 weeks ago my friend also saw 3 tuna at the pixkerija. mela you don t know that malta is pajjiz tal-mickey mouse

Spoke with an other official from fisheries early this morning and he said the same!! Tuna caught while fishing for swordfish can be taken down at the fish market and will be accepted as a by catch.
