Hi spearos this is not a joke yesterday when me and stephen went spearfishing , and just anchored the boat and was going to dress up, we so a shark fin visible out of the water about 50 mts away from the boat .We could not tell what kind of shark was but the dorsal fin was about 1 foot long and dark grey in color , we saw it for about 10 sec , but we did not have time to take pic.
By the way we did not jump there.
Maybe a shark maybe a dolphin.
I wouldnt be surprized if its a shark though fabrizio ive been on that reef many times and have encountered this more than once
would nt be surprised. Last weeks we saw lots of action on that reef where I think they where of albacore or jacks.
no lapsi boy i am sure it was a shark the fin was triangular even the way it was swimming , i ve seen dolphins several times , even inside birzebbugia port.

I think it must have been a great white because of the dark gray colour since blue sharks have a lighter fin colour (nearing blue). Tiger sharks also have a greyish fin colour but I don't think any sightings of tiger sharks have been reported in our waters.
Ma Qbatix fabrizio :P
Hekk ahjar ghax hadt zbal fik kitba
u didnt catch it fabrizio
that,s better as i made a mistake in writing
ikteb bil malti pls lapsi boy . ax ma nistax nifem x qed tikteb ras. lol.
write in Maltese pls lapsiboy as I cannot understand what u are writing about
Great White :o in that case you need a bigger boat :D was it a 3 barrel or 4 barrel fin? must tell my grandson not to go swimming near that beach! ;)
A friend of mine was out for swordfish last night and hooked onto a 15ft PIXXIPLAMTU 10NM off the east coast.

Some 2 or 3 weeks ago a friend of mine told that 2 friends of his saw one at Lapsi too about half a mile out from the coast. To tell the truth, I didn't bother very much because I tought that it may be a dolphin, but now I think I'll be more careful...
Guys be ware of you encounter one of them and do not try to play cool with them as if you shoot with a harpoon it is very hard to penetrate into its skin and it may turn at you.
For those who go near the fishfarms, to do some deepsea fishing please refrain from dangling ur feet in the water. I have seen it a couple of times and its not a very good idea if u want to cool off bring a bucket of water and cool off with it or in it. I also have the habit of pulling out fish with my hands i need to change that as its better to gaff or net a fish than have a tug-of-war with a shark.
With the increase of tuna closer to land, especially towards the filfla area, its not surprising that we started sighting sharks closer to land. Heard it lots of times even around fish pens that if you find tuna there will be sharks and dolphines as well.

That is some scary sh#@
yes i am sure that before the authorities gave permits for tuna penning they made a survey as to the impact it will have on the maltese islands sic!, and I am sure that the sharks made sure the shark issue was put aside...........As soon as we had the first tuna penn I told my wife not to go far out when swimming. She and a group of ladies used to go out in the middle of the bay at bugibba, my wife now hardly swims except close to shore.
thats all Malta needs a shark attack........
We used to sight a fin but far out at sea now we are attracting them closer to shore with the tuna penns.
I have a friend who is into sharks,he just told me that mepa had asked him what are the impacts of doing tuna pens in malta long ago before they started getting tuna.He told me that he gave them a 15 page report and nobody gave a shit about it.Thay have pictures of tuna oil(zliga) which is that slime thats on the surface(and stinks a lot) that was 3 miles long.He told me that it's like telling sharks come here you have plenty to eat.So they new that this was going to happen.
of course they knew.....if I can make 1+1 then i suppose those who are in the know how and have the power to do something, know more than than do..................cant accuse anyone but the tuna business runs in the millions.........
you're talking about tuna oil ,then go at tal ghazzenin bay at a ne swell and smell the sh#* comming out fron the sea surface the boats antifouling changes colour , it's a stick grey material.........
that's what a free country mean:(
yep sirena and then we expect tourists to come to Malta ........to swim in the tuna oil yukk..........
excuse my ignorance but where is lapsi reef??
I was speaking to a tackle shop owner in Rhodes last year, who had a huge shark jaw hanging on the wall of his shop, & I asked where it had come from, he said it was from a shark caught about 500mts outside Rhodes Town harbour! :o
He said a friend of his has a helicopter, & he has told him that from the chopper he can see very big sharks following the fishing boats in as they are gutting their catch :o
With Rhodes & Malta being on the same latitude its little wonder you have them mothers swimming around, thats why I always swim nearer to the beach than the German tourists ;) (who always seem to think its better out further) ::)

I can confirm the Tuna Oil Slick. i see it all the time when we're coming in to Land from the south east of the island. if the sea is calm you can see it stretching for about 4-6 miles. The next time it is really visible i'll try and take a snap shot of it.
the helicopter pilots and the AFM plane can see it very well I am sure........

QuoteStill, no one takes some action
WHY ??????????????
We're in Malta dude!!!!
then, when someone is seriously bitten, or even worse killed, then maybe, just maybe something might be done.... maybe...
@ ed2112 lapsi reef is quite a big reef it starts just in front of ta rita restaurant and stretches on the left below hagar qim , got it ??
ok thanks
ed
I saw a program on the discovery chanel about sharks. They said sardinia, malta and tunis form and triangle and in the summer this area is the mecca for shraks.

Ok, thanks, now I understand where.
300metres
only
oh shi...................
Not to create panic but on Sunday 26th July ( the Sunday before the last) at about 0630 hrs we were about to start collecting long lines just off "il- mara" that is between Benghisa and Hal Far. As we were looking for the signal we spotted a tail tip swinging to and fro on the surface, just about 100m off the cliffs. Sticking about 2 feet from the water, long triangular shape. It was definitely a tail tip for sure. We approached it up to about four metres, and all of a sudden it dived, presumably as it felt the engine's vibration. Sorry to all of you for not commenting before but just saw the topic today. I spread the word to all I know in the meantime.
Everyone is saying its because of tuna pens that we're getting more shark close to shore, so how come they are sited more near fifla area ? (zurrieq, ghar lapsi, tal-mara) maybe because they breed there ??
Chris 8)
Gazzetta I' ve been fishing that area, that is from tal- mara up to filfla since i was a kid. This is the first time I've seen one this close to land. To be honest I didn't recognise what type of shark it was from the tail tip. Some research i've made on the net told me it could be a basking shark (gabdoll) or a great white (from what i recall in the detail of the tail tip). http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d6/Shark_Tail_shapes.svg/576px-Shark_Tail_shapes.svg.png

Check this also.
@cal357magnum - i dont know if by coincidence or not but we saw it also on 26th july , at around 7.40 am.
Were you diving Fabrizio?
if the tip was swinging from side to side maybe it was a Mola (sun fish) as it looks like a shark fin except that it practically stays in the same position and swings from side to side.
No shanook it wasn't a sunfish. As we approached it I noticed that its' body was much more streamlined than that, it was elongated. And the tip didn't look anything like that of a sunfish.
If someone takes some pics maybe we could verify at least the kind of shark. That is whether it is a greatwhite or a Basking Shark (Gabdoll).
@cal357magnum we had just anchored the boat and where going to dress up to start a day of spearfishing.
I could have easily reached for my mobile to take some pics but to say the truth at that moment I went for the gaff! That is, till I recognised what it was!!
i had my underwater camera with me on the boat ,but at that time my mind just blanked, told stephen look , he told me thats a shark, and he pulled up the anchor at a 100 mls per hour. lol
yesterday was at B Bugia and a friend of mine told me that they spotted a shark near the freeport terminal breakwater. Dont know if its true but i will take note since i have to go to my boat about 25 m from shore with my challenger dinghy( the yellow type) and do not like to see a white face in front of me. i will start using the oars now and not my hands anymore. ???
opps I was planning to dive to take off the mooring chain at birzebbugia, i suppose it will have to stay there than. Any volonteers to dive in 1oft of murky water ................
i would let it be for the time being.
Shanook did you got in contact with Barun.

it wont last a second at BBugia as u rightly said granitu the xlukkajri will get him before he even knows what hit him.
i've seen some sharks a couple of times outside the freeport area!
not much a big deal ...... they will not do any harm.
they always go down once trying to approach by boat.
I wouldn't rely much on xlukkajri...... I know that it's a remote chance of attack but imagine seeing him just in front of your face while you're down there....I'd piss myself to death just by the fright!! LOL!!
??? ??? ??? what is xlukkajri please. ??? ??? ???
people from marsaxlokk;)
didnt u live there Mike????????????????
i did tony got called many names ( when reporting illegal fishing ) but dont remember that one, lol. thanks for info.
Today I was at B'buga and I saw a Live Sharksucker which tried to stick to my wetsuit and fins. So there must have been its host! That is a shark or some big fish.
Yeah they suck to sharks, rays, turtles and even boats so it could have been anything but people always assume shark but they could have come off a reef shark or anything. But more than likely there was a great white above your shoulder u didnt see.
If there was a great white above my shoulder there were more people at risk than me.
People swimming which can't see it coming from underneath them!

Thats probably the worst shark film ever produced. ;D
Wow so realistic that film !!!!! YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE FROM THE MEGADILDO !!!! :D :D :D
is that shark's stomach a black hole? lol i think so, jet skies, boats, everything is edible
I have posted a photo on "The Gallery" because its in JPEG format & I cant get it in this thread, would YOU have stayed to take that photo? :o enjoy your diving! :D
I put it on "Miscallaneous photos" Enjoy! ;D
