Does anyone with SSR registration know if they can venture out beyond the 12nm territorial limit ???
Yes you can venture where ever you like with an SSR registered boat, there are no restrictions imposed by the UK MCA authortities.
Your restrictions relate to Insurance cover as then insurance companies have specific requirements, however in general from Malta you can get coastal waters (40nm) providing you have an auxillary engine, VHF, GPS etc from most of the insurance companies and you don't have to be over 6m etc.
However, an SSR boat is not permitted to fish in Maltese waters, you can only fish outside of the 25nm exclusive fishing zone. I asked Dr. Gruppetta this question specifically.
So SSR is like MFC for UK?
SSR is Small Ships Registry and is controlled by the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency. In the UK you do not need to register a boat for use in local waters, it's optional, only if you want to leave UK waters do you need to register.
The SSR registry handles boats less than 24m in length for pleasure and that includes fishing for pleasure. Fishing for profit is then handled differently.
SSR in the UK is like S/Valletta in Malta, but you only pay ?25 every 5 years and no first registration fee!!

Was Dr Gruppetta referring to commercial fishing as well as recreational ???
I specifically asked about recreational as I thought there was some kind of pan european agreement but apparently that's not the case!
I still dont have an answer. !! Are we taliking about comertial fishing in this issue or recreational?
@ Venere - SSR (Small Ships Register - UK registration) are not allowed to fish in Maltese controlled waters. That is, you cannot use the boat to fish within the 25 Nmile zone around Malta. It does not make a difference whether its commercial or recreational, its still fishing.

Subject: SSR Registration
Dear Dr Andreina Fenech Farrugia,
I have registered two SSR vessels that wish to contribute to the Puttinu cares Foundation cause.
Can they be regularly registered for the Event?
Thanks
Joe Carabott Damato
Prosit Gogo, good job..., I am sure the two boats would be very pleased with this decision.
Hope the Director is going to join us for the Tournament.
wow Gogo......that was incredibly nice of Fisheries. Goes to show that for a good cause and with prior notification they are willing to conceed to allowing SSR to fish on a one-off basis. Prosit :)
