Title: Problem with mask
Post by: kurtfalcon on August 13, 2009, 22:16:12 CET
Hey friends. Ive just bought a new Mares X Vision Liquidskin mask. It fitted my face perfectly. It is said to have material which is 45% Softer for Unparalleled Comfort and 270% More Elastic to make it Highly Adaptable. So this I think means that I should have no trouble in fitting it to my face.

Sure the mask is very comfortable and as it says on he box it does not leave marks on the face after a dive. Yet I ve used it about 4 times since I bought and when I am at the surface no problems and it works fine but when I dive and go face down especially when I press my nose " biex infaqqa widnejja" alot of water comes in making vision impossible.

What can be the problem?

Hi. Hi. Can it be that you have beard? I find it best when I am clean shave due to having my beard thick as steel wool! :)

Just to let you know.
A friend of mine, had one of those masks, and to tell you the truth it was defective. It leaked from the frame, near the nose. He got it replaced and the new one had the same problem again. So check it out. The agent in malta is very reliable, so I am sure that he can help you out, but check what the real problem is first.
P.S. Note that the mask my friend had was the X vision but not Liquidskin, just normal silicone.

As for the beard it is not the case since I shave. Even my hair is short so I do not believe its because of hairs. Thanks for the interest Mayer.

Baghira how can you tell if it is leaking from the frame? Is there any method to check?

Thanks Guys

I bought one for my cousin for his birthday and it had the same problem.  Although its very comfortable it's not really a good mask (I tried it myself)

Kurt we could see it leaking when under pressure in the water, from the frame. That is the only way, you have to put it in the face and try.

Kevin G.
That is a very common problem.
Leave it in soapy water (lemon degreaser) in mild hot water for some time and  wash. You can also use some jiff before you use it, put in the lens before you leave home and then rinse at sea. If problem persists, you can also use a lighter and pass quickly allover the mask, lans and rubber to burn all residues, you will see sparkles when the silicone burns. Lastly, always spit in the mask when dry, before you get in the water.

When you bought it, before using it in the water you needed to rub the inner lens with a potato ( inner part i.e. the part we eat) or with some liquid soap then rinse it well in water.

Then every time you dive before it touches the water spit on the inner part of the lens and rub with the spit. Otherwise if this disgusts you use a piece of sea grass that you find on the shore and rub it thoroughly with it. Always rinse it well after using any technique above. Another thing which you can try is the anti-fog liquid which can easily be bought from any dive shop. I never tried the anti-fog since I always use the natural materials. ;)

Returning to my problem, does anyone know where I can contact Mares? When I searched on their international website I didn't find any email address or telephone number.

baghira when I dive lets say the first 3 meters the musk sucks and puts alot of pressure onto my face. Does this have anything to do with it. Maybe it cant bare the pressure so it leaks? This pressure thing never happened to me with the Technisub i owned before and another Mares before it.

I've had the mask for 4 four years I think now, the only think I did is took it once to Alex of subaqua supplies and changed the outer frame cause as it's very fragile but the rest for me it's a good mask.
Just be careful as its high volume so you won't go down a lot with it !!

Gazzetta you changed the frame because it broke or because it leaked?

No no it didnt leak but when I went to Alex he told me it was close to do so because of its outer frame but mine never leakes.

Uses it a bit last sunday and still perfect !!  I think it's the 4th or 5th season now.

When I buy  a new mask I put it in some liquid soap + warm water an let it to stand in it for a couple of minutes like they already told you!!! Then after I put some PEPSODENT ( with floride) in it and with a USED toothbrush I rub the lenses for a couple of minutes so the micro granules scrap the silicone away !!! this is the best technique I found hope it works for you as it has always done for me

Many nice models to choose from........Various makes       all are good. Just choose one for your needs if spearfishing or scuba?
Scuba greater vision mask, with large internal volume.
Apnea, low internal volume mask, with lenses close to the eyes.

The one currently I am using is the minimask or micromask by technisub. Fantastic, and so say whever tried it.......... Bit expensive I have to admit.

Always be carefull if it hurts your face, top of nose when it squeezes.

I have an x-vision mask bought from Aqua supplies about 4 yrs about for LM 18.

Its good for both snorkelling and diving.

I recomend buying too a anti-fog bottle to clear the glasses before you dive.
