Title: GPS Problems
Post by: Tatanka on August 25, 2009, 07:31:49 CET
Is there any one out there that can advise on a GPS repair person/specialist as I had a mobile GPS Garmin I plus handheld & seems to have lost all the data on it  :'(

I am not really concerned with regards to the GPS itself as it has done it's time. All I would like to do is try & retrieve the data off the GPS.

I have been on the net surfing on how to do it & all I could find was a thread on another Marine forum stating that it is possible , it wasn't the specific model I mentioned above.

Has anyone ever had this issue before & resolved in Malta.  ???

Try contacting nando_S [a member of this forum] he might be able to help.  I have his contacts but not his permission to divulge them ... try using the forum first.

What's the exact model of this unit. Most GPS's have an internal battery which can be changed but it may involve soldering on the main PCB so its a bit tricky if you've never done anything like it before.. Old models, Magellan and Garmin usually use all waypoint and other data from year to year because of this. Most probably you're f*?#ed but f you would like to give it a try PM me.

I think same applies to you LapsiBoy. Try and make sure you keep batteries full charge before you store the unit during the winter months.

As a general precaution you should always backup your waypoints, saved tracks and other important data to your PC at least once a month if they are of any value to you......

I believe there is nothing you can do to retrieve the data. When the memory battery fails the data is all lost. If you change the battery you can store new data again and will be retained.

Give me a call/PM later next month as I am quite busy though.
