Summer is over, the boat is landed, the motor is winterized & the fish can relax (to tell the truth they could have been relaxed in summer if I was the only one fishing)....anyway, I would like to know if there is a procedure to preserve my precious lures and hooks for the winter period. Usually I just rinse them, but even the best s/s hook get some minor staining let alone the standard hooks. Obviously use of engine oil, WD40 is out of the question. Any suggestions?? What about rods and reels?
Nothing much you could do for the rods and lures. Just give them a good rinse and make sure they're dry before storing them. For the reels, besides rinsing, there are a couple of good write ups/posts as how to service your reel.
Before storing a reel.. it's important to loosen the drag as much as possible.. or leave in freespool and leave the clicker on so the spool won't move freely..
Better if you do it after every fishing trip, but when storing.. a must..

plastic lures can be washed in mild soap, rinsed and when completely dry u can place them in a cardboard box after they have been rubbed in talcum powder (non fragrant of course). regarding hooks why do u say not to use WD40 I know of anglers who actually spray their plastic lures with WD40. The most important for hooks is to not to stick them into anything especially cork and leave them free.
For those who made good catches dont forget that the first half meter of line should be cut off so ur leader is shorter by that much for next year.
As Maltembu said take the drag off reels and learn how to dismantle, grease and reassemble ur reels. Inspect drag washers and dont use WD40, or products that have petroleum base ingredients on the plastic frame as it can damage or crack it. Use silicone spray but be careful not to inhale too much of it (can be harmful).

I do my winterizing much the same way as Shanook described. I also dip all my hooks in some olive oil to protect from corrosion. Plastic soft lures especially should be rinsed each and every time used, however, to lay up for the winter period, spray some silicon onto them, it will keep them soft and repel any moisture. Check all leaders for any chaffing or kinks, and replace as necessary. Reels should be sprayed with WD40 or equivalent, drags released, and reels put in free spool with clicker on. Rods rinsed in water, thoroughly dried and sprayed with either silicon or WD40, especially roller tips and rollers. If you feel confident enough, take the reels apart and oil as per manufacturer's specifications. I do that each year.

hey guys can someone give me a tip of how to clean my lures properly? eg rust ?
"sometimes" I get lazy & don't clean them after my fishing session grrrrr
prevention is better than cure rammx! unfortunately when they start to rust the only solution is changing the hooks!

already searched the net and read that wd40 would be good... but i'm abit sceptic about this sollution,as i think the lubricant will leave a strong scent on the lure
I dont like using certain lubricants on lures,like you said they will leave a smell on them.
....maybe i chose the wrong thread freedive :-[

Better if you get the rust stains off you rod's 1st!!! :P
DON'T put WD-40 on your lures!! I know there was an e-mail going around not so long ago saying that as fish oil is a major component of WD-40 it's makes a good fish attractant...so by that standard of 'logic' its a bit like saying vodka goes well with fried fish,seen as though potatoes (chips) are usually a major component of vodka...Having said that for all i know it might make a new interesting condiment..beats the hell out of ketchup or lemon juice i 'spose ;D :D
Seriously don't worry about a couple of rust stains mate! but to avoid them in the future if you rinse your lures under clear water when you get home and give them a once over with a cloth then they wouldn't rust so quickly (ja ghazzin!! ;D)
