Sorry but will not make it this time niether as I will be abroad till the 11/11/09. Just missed it , mind you it will be better for the other competitors as that is home for me. Fished that area regularly with the catch & release practice. Make sure you do not completely catch all the fish as I will not have anything to catch when I get back. Good luck to all taking part.

How is the bottom there and depth? And what type of fish you catch?Cause i never fished there!!
Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: Reelin on October 28, 2009, 09:29:33 CET
mmm...bottom is rough.... you can get easily stuck as 4 depth it depends but 2.5 3 meters in close range is average
Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: Reelin on October 28, 2009, 09:33:06 CET
as for fish there is quite a variety....apart from the normal tal qiegh there r some good spots for kahli/zabri.nice and sized marzpan
Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: mulett75 on October 28, 2009, 18:44:13 CET
I confirm that there might be a problem with the keep nets, especially if the sea will be a little rough. In cases like this I use a big bucket or try to find a big hole with water and put the fish in there.

Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: owenbullu on October 28, 2009, 23:10:32 CET
Btw since this is my 1st competition. If fish that I catch die do they still count? And why is it difficult to keep nets over there, is it because there is a bit of distance between the sea and shore?
Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: camkev on October 28, 2009, 23:12:34 CET
Of course they will still count!!I think the nets because there are rocks and when it's rough its difficult to keep the fish in the nets!

I would love to fish, this would be my first competition in malta and would like to get to know some of you guys. I fish mainly around birzebbuga and never fished at marsascala, so if anyone has any information as to what methods and baits work best, it would be very helpful (if you dont mind giving all your secrets away) ;)
Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: mulett75 on October 29, 2009, 18:36:10 CET
I can tell you that there is not much difference from Birzebbugia to Zonqor Point. Normally we use shrimps, (live or frozen), worms and crayfish. These normally are used for casting. If you use a pole all the above are still good but one can add the bread. As regards methods one can use the pater noster rig for bottom fishing. One has to be carefull as the bottom is a rocky one and one can easily get stuck to the bottom, so prepare extra rigs.
For sure if you have any other kind of method just try it, I am sure it will work.

if any one is good at catching xilep using the green weed grass which grows on the rocks at ZP, this competition should be a piece of cake. went diving last week and saw many dozens all well sized. some people fish for xilep in this area using this weed, the best point being the very point of zonqor point. Also saw some nice sawrell schools.

Can someone advise what's the best method to fish there?Like a 6mtr hand rod is enough? Most of us never went fishing ther so a bit of help would be very useful...dont worry placebo and mulett75,one of you is going to win it for sure.but it will till be fun fishing with most of you!!!Another thing is that we need more members to join in,i am sure that there are more who can come.Instead of asking were and how you fish maybe you can join us and learn someting from each other  ;)

I think that this time of year the best fishing at Zonqor Point is for zabri and xilep and and maybe sargi  if the sea is a little bit rough .the most important thing is that you are in the right place(fil lok fejn ikun hemm ir rima).A rod from 7 to 9 metres must use if the sea is little bit rough (jekk ha tistad ghal tal wicc). If the sea is calm try bottom fishing.Another problem very important if you don't wake up early you will find people fishing on the best spots and also you will find guys with the (terrieha) Good luck to all

@camkev my intension is not to win but to fish with some forum members and tio see otjher participating and have some fun. If you want during the competition stay next to me and I can show/tell what my intentions will be. Btw I can tell you know. I will have abouit 3 to 4 casting rods (ghal tal qih). nothing special but I can assure you that at Zonqor point there is a lot of fish such as (briqex, gharajjes, sparli and even mrazpan). A pole will be standing ready besides me as sime time small mullet will cime to suface.
If you want more info, please ask

re the landfishing competition, will it be at the tip of ZP or further to the left along the front shoreline... i.e. heading to Xaghjra?

i'm very new to fishing and although I was considering to take part (just to have a better idea of shore fishing), I still cannot make it next Sunday... but maybe i come to have a look for a couple of hours...

thanks

NW 5/6 will be pretty rough..as a safer place we go go inward to the port at m'scala but its not as good as zonqor

ejja guys come on!

this should be a great event ..... not just a fishing competition but a good excuse to share more the experience.

Competition is a great challenge. There are no exact plans in fishing it's just getting the best out of the place you're fishing in.

we need more participants to make such events bigger.

Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: mulett75 on November 05, 2009, 19:24:27 CET
For those inexperience for an event like this, I would like to give some hints on a competition like this.
1) Bait - be sure that you will have a good mixed bait with you, eg Shrimps, worms, bread, and other bait such as live bait. One has to think that if any kind of fishing is not giving results, one has to shift to a different kind of fishing.
2) Rods- If possible try to have more than one casting rods. This will enable the fisherman to swap rods, especially when one loose the tackle due to the rocky bottom.
3) Poles- Bring with you any poles that you have. One might start fishing with a long pole and than can change to a smaller obne to fish for eg vopi.
4) Since over there the bottom is very rocky bring with you a good supply of weights of different sizes. You do not have to use heavy ones. The bigger the weight, the bigger chance to get stuck.
Other thing is that you even bring with you ground bait. If weather not permitting we go to another place where one might fish for eg mulett.

A competition like this is like one goes to many different methods of fishing in one day, so try to think of any kind of methods and be prepared.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL

Hello skip & all,

I am very new to this forum, and very new to fishing, but I would like to give it a try just for the fun of it, with a simple 7mtr hand pole, as I am not very well equipped... i.e. just the very basics!!  :-[

Actually I am coming to learn from you all, rather than competing.

Please confirm if you are meeting at the carpark or other place...

I don't know ANYONE of you as I am still new...!

Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: placebo on November 06, 2009, 21:33:26 CET
i think if we meet in the carpark it will be good.

yes ppl .... it's good to come give it a try........

use mainly paternosters as mullet described and have different pole rod lengths available.

you will see how much you learn the way of getting the best out of your peg.

hope we all have fun and do not worry too much about the weather... we'll see in the morning and decide if the weather does not permit.

after all that's what a bunch of fisherman is made of .... people who challenge the elements of nature and fish.

tight lines to everyone.

Altough , I will not be taking part due to I will abroad at the moment , I would like to add another suggestion to what Mullet 75 stated above especially for the ones that are going to be using casting rods. Highly recommended to take a few running floats to as believe me I have seen people that came fishing there & do not know the area & had 6 lost tackles in 6 casts so that is 100% snag on the rocky bottom. depends how far you cast I would say put the stopper about 6mtrs to 7mtrs up the line if say you cast 30 to 35 mtrs out. Maybe a couple of divers can volontere to collect the tackle after the competition. lol Good luck gents.
Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: camkev on November 07, 2009, 12:50:06 CET
Everyones is saying about lost tackle and how rocky it is!!Why dont we fish somewhere else???It's no fun like most of us never fished there you have to change the tackle every time you cast.If it's that rocky i will stay fishing with a hand pole,no problem for me,it's just fun and meeting other guys from the forum is great  ;)
Title: Re: Competition: Land Fishing 8th November
Post by: fish-noob on November 07, 2009, 14:26:55 CET
i went there fishing once with a friend for an hour, i did not lose any tackle but it sure is a snaggy bottom. the water is quite a way to reach so maybe that's why someone mentioned a barrada is not ideal. even netting a fish is hard. i think there are few places that are good for alot of people to fish with a hand pole, and there is a risk that these would already be taken by that time. for me anywhere you want to go fish it is no problem. i personally prefer using the reel instead of the pole.  and having said all that, i am not from that vicinity and as i said i only went once for an hour. it could be that there are better places to stay in zonqor stess ;)

kudos to ur fiance {"_"} m8.

on another tone, a comment that i heard today from a member of the forum. Awareness on fish sizes and keeping them alive should be tackled in a different way. If all fishermen would replace the buckets with keep-nets (where possible) it would improve the rate of live fish thrown back in the sea. Why doesn't the fisheries start by giving free keep-nets :) that would be a positive starting point if they insist to start with the recreational fisherman.

Competition wasn't at Zonqor. we met there but as there was a mixed experience level and it was pretty rough it was decided to relocate to a more sheltered place. Was held in Kalkara Creek on the Birgu side though.

on another tone, a comment that i heard today from a member of the forum.

From what I heard, it seems that European legislation needs to be clarified. What I did note that when a fish swalled a hook, Mulett75 would simply cut the line and not try and dig the hook out of the fish. Hook disolves or is passed through and less stress is placed on the fish.

yes, i do that if she swallows. more because I haven't gotten round to learning how to use the disgorger properly. unless you are using stainless they will dissolve in a few days / weeks.

Great day had fun though I wished that there were good sized fish. A note on the disgorger..... Normally I use it to take out the hook but it's near impossible to keep the fish alive while you are digging in it's stomak, immagine yourself as the fish, I don't think that you'll injoy that. The best way is to cut the line.

Nice offer, like an informal workshop so to speak to learn the different techniques. It was very interesting watching you all fish and seeing how one needed to have different types of rods for different techniques and styles, and even the variety of bait.

We have Alfadelta to thank for those as he kindly co-sponsored the event as official time keepers. I've been drooling over their watches online recently!
