Competitions will be open to members and non members at different rates
The big Alungi comp has been scheduled early in June because we were late this year when the weather let us down. I would rather aim for early June (especially with the public holiday) and if the Alungi are in and the weather is good we'll go for it, otherwise we will have more flexibility to postpone.
This year's Alungi competition looks to be even bigger than last years in terms of prizes that will be up for grabs.....stay tuned for more info and get those boats ready early this year :)
UPDATE: The Alungi comp is basically scheduled for June......rather than settle on exact dates it could be any Sunday in June and will depend on the weather and whether the fish have come in. Dates will be confirmed later on.
whats this gonna be skip? trolling? bottom fishing? jigging? as less than a month to the date so better to start preping the boats and gear.
If you mean Feb Coastal.......Let's get some feedback.....
Jigging and Bottom Fishing Would be interesting but I don't want to exclude trolling per se.....
Would it be feasible in your opinions to leave it open - Trolling, Jigging, Rod Bottom Fishing. No long lines?
well, if its not a competition, i guess anything goes, we just make sure all fish caught and kept are in line with the legal size requirements. Also, which part of the island will this be set? when you say coastal, say, up to 2 miles out or? better to start discussing this as time flies by rather quickly....
Id say have it a trolling competition
We could have something similar as the competition held last year. Though i would recomend that we leave port at around 11 or 12 am and end the competition at around 6pm
Will open a topic in the relevant section to discuss.
Nick I know it's a bit early but June is only 6 weeks away and time is rolling quite fast..... shall we be prepared in case alungi gets closer early june as they did last year ?

Past experience has shown us that the presence of Alongi along the west coast increase in presence to towards the 3rd week of June till the 2nd week of July. Last year Alongi did come close by the 2nd week of June, but then dissapeared, only to appear sporadically. The Forum Alongi competition held last year showed that with only a few participants reporting single catches. The ideal time for the competition is when the presence peaks. Another important factor to consider is the weather.
I would say we should be aiming for the 13th June, unless we have really strange weather and the Alungi come in and stay in earlier. We will be working hard on this over the next few weeks.
:-( any day before 15th june, i'm out as i finish my ACCA exams that day..........
It's true Joe and I agree 100% but as you pointed out as well last year the alungi came close to shore earlier and we have to prepared in case it happens again ( unlikely but not impossible ).
I think the earlier the better as over the past five years they seem to be coming in earlier . I was thinking spearo comp end may as in june heavy boat traffic starts and we should keep in our minds safty as it will be aj season and most of us will be on reefs.
Good Bros.
Hope spearos participate in this friendly competition.
I myself has never taken part in any cometition like many others.
gees baghira and I wanted to take u with me this year but........Wifey decided to start our holidays early this year..........we,ll see
The Gaffer will be available for the Spearo competition either as a suppost vessel or dedicated to a team who won't have a boat.
ehhhhhhhhh shanook
Id better come and have a short conversation with wife...........:-)
or else u go with her on the cruise and holiday and i stay here ........................................yea as if ?!?!?!
But we have to invent something hopefully alungi will be here and we pop over on a weekend before I leave
By the way
Thanks goes to the gaffer for is help.
Hi! just asking, is it possible to change the spearfishing competion which is being held on the 31st oct to any other date. I realy wana come to this competion as last year I enjoyed my self very much.
Note: cause on the 31st I have a double fishing competion which I can t miss as it is part of the club s league.
Hi, 31st October was a proposed date, not yet confirmed. I will however be away returning at the begining of Nov, and it's best to discuss this with SimonG the senior moderator in charge of Spearfishing. Send him a PM, perhaps those who are interested can start letting him know to get an idea of numbers
Hi Guys, long time no posting from my end - I go along with my good old buddy.....Joe the Gaffer - My boat should be berthed at Senglea by dock no 1 in about a week. If anybody needs a support vessel, its there for the taking, kollox gratis!. Its been "on the hard" /boat yard since the end of July just before I left for my work in North Africa. Alhough I have been back 5 weeks ago I have not been so keen to launch her simply cos I have been seeing and noting the very poor Lampuki season on record. I do have my 16.5ft Perla at sea but she also miskina has been having a "lazy time" too. Despite plenty of free time on my hands it's really not worth going so far out just for a dozen or so Lampuki. FYI - No Plamti caught in our area, no Kalamari or Kubrit as yet, very few Tumbrell. Everything seems to have disappeared this year! Never know it like this.
On another subject...I sent an SMS to Tonio of Paq-Paq asking him when the "Caf-Caf" Alongi fishing competition documentary is being screened on TVM – no reply from this guy. Does anybody know when the programme is going to be aired?

is this still on?
Due to the state of my father's health, unfortunately I am unable to dedicate much time to the forum at the moment.
Sorry guys, Regards Skip
you should join KSFA or else get a bunch of guys from this club and work more on shore fishing events. Maybe you can have a subcommittee like they are doing with the big game group.
You should become part of the federation of sea anglers which is recognized by Malta Olympic Comitee. Think about it! There are big possibilities in this growing sports.
Shortly we will be competing overseas in national tournaments.
sorry to hear that skip.
sorry to hear about your fathers health, hope he gets better............

So sorry to read the news Nick. Make courage and trust in God's hands!
Very sorry to hear that nick.Unfortunately ive had to go through this myself & like tony said enjoy his company while you can and try make him as comfortable as possible...
In these delicate times, Nick needs the support and solidarity of all. The forum admin had lined up a number of initiatives for 2011, and although some of them will have to be put on the back burner for now, because as we all know Nick is the driving force of this Forum, others I'm willing to coordinate and drive forward.
This year we only managed to achive the Oris Alongi fishing competition, one land based fishing friendly meeting, and no speareos competition. I appreciate that these events take up a considerable amount of time to organise, and get on the road. For 2011, I want to see a higher level of participation from members in the organising committee. I also know that a number of you are revisiting their accademic studies, and have work commitments.
For 2011, the Forum Admin would like to see more people coming forward and offering their help in the organisation of events. For sure, we should organise an annual get together (now whether its drinks, nibbles & drinks, etc) that can be decided at a later stage, to close off the year and herald a new yesr into our calander. I would like to have an indicative events calander agreed to before we all meet. That way, we can communicate the events calander of 2011 during the get-together event.
For sure, we will be rethinking the annual Oris Alongi competition to a more open and widespread event. Current thinking is that we rename this event to the Oris Big Game Tournament, yes big game, and open it to a number of pelagic species, and forms of fishing/angling. It will still be held on one single day, but this event will not be limited to just catching Alongi, but open to other Tuna species (NOT Bluefin Tuna), Pastardella, Dentici and Amberjacks. We have the knowledge and capability of organising such an event, and we also have the support of ORIS thanks to Jos. Debono Jewellers, RLR, Buona Pesca (Okuma agent) and a number of other worthy sponsors.
We also would like to organise a 2nd attempt at costal fishing sometime in February or March, and a spear fishing comptetion (where we have already been contacted by a sponsor willing to help) and land fishing competition and of course, a summer BBQ. All these events require resources. The MFF admin team feels it needs more resources to join up and help in the organisation/administartion of these events.
Anybody willing to join up and help out, please come forward here and put your name down. It would be beneficial by indicating which event/s you want to be involved in, and the area where you feel you can contribute most (area as in organisation, sponsor engagement, rules and regulations, administartion and event coordination, etc).
I am sorry to hear that Nick. As Benri rightly said trust in God's hands I will pray for him and your family.
