Post by: floody on January 05, 2010, 12:16:00 CET
hi guys,

im new to fishing and would like to have a go at spinning.
been looking online for some spinning rods...and found two which cost around the 30euro mark and are from reputable brands....dnt want to spend lots of money since im a beginner.

the rods are:
SHIMANO fxs-80mhb-2
8ft - 2 piece
7 rings
casts 3/4 - 4 oz **
line weight - 12 - 25lb
guides - alu oxide.

&

DAIWA ELIMINATOR SURF SPINNING RODS
7ft - 2 piece
5 rings
casts - 0.5-2oz **
line weight - 10-20lb
guides - alu oxide.

** 1oz = 28g

i already have a spool of SPIDERWIRE ULTRACAST INVISI-BRAID - 15LB.
would like to fish from shore, although i might have a go when using the dinghy in summer.
the forum is very helpful, but the more i read, the more i get confused.
can you please help me out?

cheers guys.....  8)

i'd go for the first for baracuda.... its quite difficult to get kahli by spinning, trolling would be better....... remember its just the lure you are going to be casting.... but im no spinning expert, but this is my opinion, even the 2nd is to 'tough' a rod for kahli... for kahli spinning, look for a rod with 4-12g action, 0.15oz-0.43oz

Hi floody. I've been spinning for quite a while now and I have consequently formed quite a few opinions for myself regarding spinning in malta.  If you're looking for a good all rounder rod to start spinning you will want to be looking at these specs:

Length: 6'6" to 8'4"

2 piece is Good, but a one piece is best if you don't mind that.

Get Alconite or Sic guides if using braided line, brands other than fuji like ATC are good, just make sure the guides are Stainless steel.

The Rod should ideally be Medium to Fast Action

the lure weight should be from 1/4oz to 1oz 1/4 , if you get any heavier you will SWEAR to cast lighter lures like Yo-Zuri crystals. You will also lose a lot of 'feel' from the lure which is essential to work certain lures correctly.
