Post by: Destination Sea on January 10, 2010, 19:17:56 CET
I have been to my Aunt in Valenzano prov of Bari Italy this December and been along the coast from One village to the other. All have Marinas with pontoons slips etc. Others which had a lot of fishing vessels had fuel facilities and cranes (like those of M Xlokk)and here !!!!

The Marinas along the Southern Italian and Sicilian coast were built on the initiative of the Government to boost turisim in the Southern Sector of the Italian coast.  All Marinas were then passed onto (via public contracts) Private enterprise to administer.  A similar thing is happening with the marinas here in Malta which were administered by the MMA, the only difference is that these marinas are now old, in desperate need of upgrading, and the investment will be forked out by private enterprise.

You're right sirena about the calls for the setting up of temporary marinas.  However, Local councils, and a number of NGO's supporting the environment protested against the setting up of these temporary marinas citing different reasons ranging from disterbance to the habitat to traffic management!!....Thats right, only in Malta.  Just like the wind farm proposed on Sikka l-bajda! and l-Ahrax tal- Mellieha, Birdlife protested that the sound emmitted from the wind turbines wil ldefinitely disturb the birds nesting in the cliffs and surroundings!
