Title: Sothern Bluefin Tuna Portland Victoria Australia
Post by: twoutes on May 16, 2010, 06:30:53 CET
Hi Guys.
I just thought that l would fill you in on a few trips that l have done recently.
Just got back from chasing tuna out in  Bass straight. That's the water between Victoria and Tasmania. There are some big fish up to 145kg being caught, but we are yet to get one that big

There are heaps of fish out there up to 20kg, which are loads of fun to catch on light gear. I've been using my snapper rod with a Shimano 4500B baitrunner with 30lb braid and a 80lb leader.

We love eating tuna, so it was an easy decision to catch our bag limit, which is 2 per person. The only problem it that within an hour of fishing, our limit is reached. You can only imagine how many fish were released back in good condition

We used small skirted lures up to 300mm long, and the best colours were dark blue/purple, and black/red skirts. They were similar lures to what l bought with me to Malta to catch Northern Bluefin tuna.

Nice update Joe and also good to see the excellent fishing. As you know we are restricted to catch and release in the Med now so no Bluefin for us.

Not necessarily a bad thing if it helps them come back in the huge numbers that they are known for, providing they have reduced the quota on the commercial sector.
Bag limits are at 2 tuna per person at the moment, but l believe that it is managed very well here....but unfortunately you always find that some one tat wants to keep more.

We just got back from another trip, but this time we took my nephew Cameron (9 years old) for his very first bluewater fishing trip, and also my other brother Michael. Cameron caught 2 tuna on 15kg gear, and now cant wait till we take him marlin fishing
