Title: VHF relay to land line
Post by: Moonwalker on September 08, 2010, 11:05:23 CET
In the past fisherman used to call Valletta port to make a VHF relay to a land line. I have never used this before but when I tried it (2 weeks ago) I was told that its only for emergencies. So anyone knows why this useful service has been stopped and if there's a possibility to start it again?

LOL I tried it a couple of years ago and they laughed at me. It was a service Malta Radio used to offer but with the widespread deployment of mobile phones I think they demised their old relay equipment. It probably wasn't worth investing in new equipment

Thanks Skip but my firends were still using it in the past 1-2 years. Problem is that the mobile is not reliable past 15nm from land and so this service would come very handy when out there.

Totally agree, I used to use it years ago on my Dads boat due to reception issues and found it very comforting but like I said, it was probably demised due to a lack of use.

PLB or SatPhone! is what remains.
