Not comparable to your catches surely but still a nice catch on light tackle

Wow those are very nice, from shore or on a small boat? Quantity is sometimes nicer than 2 large ones.
we caught those from shore from wied il ghajn in approximately 3hrs. we had also some sparli and mullet which were all thrown away, even some mullet of the photo( we kept only five of them). A keepnet is essential in mullet fishing, a fish which is a highly slow growing. also i can note we had some big hook ups but got away immediately after. probably they were very big xilep(bream) or sawrell ta l imperial.
Beautiful Catch - any ideas on weights of the mullet - they look quite large. I would be interested to know what you were fishing with and at what time...my results off Zonqor point have not been very fruitful in the past.
Once again - nice catch...
Darren
i can't tell you exactly about the weight but approximately they weighted around the 1.5 kgs altogether ( some are not in the photo and it isĀ an estimate). the most important is the catch and release guys, it is important if we want to catch bigger mullet from shore. usually i use farka for mullet if there is no vopi present. thus it is becoming quite uneffective as the vopi is getting near to shores
nice catch granitu....... at what time did you catch them..? early evening?
If these where caught in a clean place, these are the beste. They dont grow big theses type. They are with a yellow patch on their face. The best in tast. Nice catch

don' t know exactly, but went for a 3hr fishing evening at salina. from where the nasty smell comes... and caught (and released) around 10 mullet all having the yellow spot emicmalta talked about...don't you think those mullets are not good for eatinG?
i think the sea is polluted there...
We have a species of mullet here in south wales at a place called Llangenith Beach, which is an Atlantic storm beach, which are called golden grey mullet. They have a gold spot, about the size of a thumb print on the shoulder of the fish just behind the gills. They are quite rare to catch. Some people spend months trying to catch one instead of the normal grey mullet.
no they arent good to eat from that place altought that there are people that eat every thing. Mullets is very common and it s easy to catch that at several technicks.
There is only few places where can be caught clean so check for places that has their envierment
no i didn't eat them... as emic said. probably they are polluted... been a while since i posted those photos, caught others bigger(1-2 kgs range) but the pariti problem is everywhere as soon as they see you catching something that is it.
from that photo, i rekon that we kept 5 of those. i usually give some of them to a friend of mine. he cooks them for his dogs(stray dogs)
Once i did gave them to a friend( a catch of 20+) and he eat them all togethjer with his family and he didn't experience any food poison. and marsaxlokk is in fact a very polluted area!
But better safe than sorry.
Also mullet is a very good bait for bottom fishing
thnks emicmalta and granitu..... i rarely eat mullet since it isn't a fish of my like.
but still i never caught the big mullet yet... what could i use to attract more mullet guys?
for ground bait i use bread crumbs with a lot of water and add milk too...proteins!
is the mix effective? (rarely for me) can someone please give me some clues on what can i try more... to add with the ground bait mix.
thnks
Hi fava,
A good thing to mix with your groundbait (apart from milk) is "cefalo" mix which you can buy from mister fish it has a very strong 'cheese smell' very much like 'gobon tas-sajd' but not as pungent! you only need to put a bit with your groundbait and dont mix your groundbait with too much water, but just enough to be able to form it into a ball in your hand before you throw it in.
A good place to go for big mullett is in tax biex in front of the embassy (near Black Pearl) but you need to get there early as there will be alot of people fishing there.
Also some of the 'banjiet' there are quite deep (around 9m being the deepest and some a 7m rod is perfect) so you if you are using a pole you will need a 9m rod for the deeper ones as you need to fish about 30cm off the bottom to get the big guys! i used to go regular(ish) there and 2kg mullett were common, however i have a friend who goes regular and he said its more in the 1-1.5kg range now.
You can fish with 'farka' there but if there are alot of small vopa they will eat your bait instantly and in that case your best bet is to use 'maguna' that is bread soaked in water and then you knead as much of the water out as possible, you can also put a bit of 'cefalo' with this mixture too as it can be good especially on slow days.

ohh great...i've never tried fishing in those areas since i live in the north.. but still i would one day give it a go there..! i normally go to salina (near coastline) but the fish there vanished. maybe they migrated to the black pearl... hehe
just a small question.... sardine oil is or is not good for catching mullet?!?
[[i think for vopi it's best to use it for vopi.]]
Fish On!
Andrea
nice catch! i've been trying for mullet myself but i think i can't quite get the technique right. actually i only caught (and released obv) some bubin. are bubin small mullets?
yes that is right! mullet is a highly unpredictable fish but if they want to bite it could be fun. The wind affects a lot the mullet but ultimately excellent reflexes and some perseverance is needed to hook up the big ones? Where are you trying to fish them? (p.s. just to figure out why they don't bite)
Hi granitu, i used to go fishing with my uncle... and once he told me that bubin is another type of fish. mullet are the ones with that yellow spot of their face. when we used to go fishing we used to catch 6-7inch bubin, each without that spot.
As far as i know, according to my uncle, mullet is different from bubin because of the yellow spot.
Can anyone please expand on this, cos i am still confused?

Fava
As far as i know there are different types of mullets.... i known 5 of them and caught 4 of them... the ones with he dott in maltese we call them "mulett tal misluta safra/ sewda"(2 types)
then there is the one you reckoned that has no dots. I think that type of mullet doesn't grow much and is the most common of them all. it is found from may- dec for fishing in ports and it is a migratory mullet.
Then there is the other mullet which has no marks too and grows a lot- becomes a kaplat may reach the 7kgs! has a different head/skull?? compared to others
The other is the golden mullet, which i never caught and is the most rare of all. I just know of his existence, never saw it or caught it.
Anyways, that is what i know, i might be wrong in some details but here in the south by bubin me mean very small mullet
il mulett tista tmur tistadlu bil-lejl? ax il lejla ha immur sant anglu u forsi kif inkun as sargi niprova nistad alijom
tista tipprova bil farka jaf imiss imma mux facli.....
OHH thnks Granitu... i think you are right...
never tried to fish for mullet during the night.. i think tonight is a bit windy for mullet.
When i tried fishing for mullet in windy weather, i was not very successful.
imma jekk ghandek post naqra kenni, tajjeb hafna!
good luck kristofer!!!
a windy weather coupled with some luck and good technique can be excellent......
ma amilna xejn hbieb ax ma inziltx minhabba li qabdet naqra xita irqiqa issa naraw ada filodu
by d way granitu.... there are two methods of doing il farka ?
Because on ksfamalta.org has another method of doing il farka...
the other method i also know, which surely works, is without putting the bread in the refrigerator, without boiling it....etc
maybe the method i know is not called farka...but i heard someone say - this is THE farka!
Fava
The farka method i use normally is done in the kfsa manner and i found out that is the best. the other methon is more like a bread paste, it works but not comparable to the real farka. Farka method can be deadly for hooking big mullet as it becomes moist, sort of a tajjara in water and mullet doesn't bite but suck!!!
Right now i don't think i will continue preparing it cos i found a better paste with my own recipe and secret ingredients he he he. If it stays productive as i found out myself while feeding some mullet, it worked........
everyone has some secret ingredient.. hehehhe...
tight lines
for all of us!
actually it is a sort of recipe i have to try out this summer. An italian guy gave me inspiration and in his country so far it is working. I met him when i was fishing for mullet once and he joined in.
I would advice against eating mullet regularly. They take quite a few years to grow to a decent size and accumulate heavy metals such as mercury. They should not be eaten by children and pregnant women.
hi guys mullet can be caught at nights.
it does depend on the place and the time of the year.
I did land excellent numbers of mullet during the night from isla, birzebbuga and mxlokk.
HI GUYS.....WOULD SOMEONE SUGGEST NIGHT FISHING FOR MULLET?...AROUND THE BLACK PEARL AREA, MSIDA. SHOULD I USE THE PATERNOSTER RIG? AND A 0.14 LINE?

I have been a mulett fan for some years now, and always used farka. In the beginning i tried all sorts of farka, the traditional way and the fancy bread types, tbh they all work fine, but my favourite farka is done very simple by using Sandwich slices, just wetting them a bit with water squeeze eccess water and dry them in a piece of kitchen cloth. I found 2 types of sandwiches which are the best ( li jiggomma ) no.1 is jespers.
what would you suggest as another ingredient in ground bait to attract mullet besides bread?
Mix it with Graited cheese (can be found in all fishing shops), also there are some ppl that like to use frak tal-ghadam with it.(Dak li jibqa ghand il-butcher shop mas-segga)
laham tas sega is very good for mulett but do not mix it with bread. The best thing to do with laham tas sega is to mix it with simolina and it is great for mulett.
thats one of the best. In past I used it a lot with very good results. Semolina use to dry it a bit so you can manage to work better
SO HOW IS THE PROCESS TO FISH WITH LAHAM TAS SEGA?
YOU CRUSH THE FROSEN BITS AND MIX WITH SEMOLINA?
NEVER USED IT SO....WORTH ASKING
