What can we do to an outboard motor for trolling at 1knot, if the slowest speed I can do is 2 knots.
Just was told to troll an empty bucket?

Baghira - easiest thing to do is to saw off one prop blade..hehe..and why do you want to troll at 1knt? Going for Kahli?

precisely baghira.  Troll a bucket behind you.  The friction caused by the bucket's hollow side against the water should slow your speed down considerably.  I would also check whether the outboard is rated for long operating hours at idle speed too.

We have a trolling valve on the boat aldo we have never used it. The lever is a single lever sort of the one that is used for hydrolic gearboxes. Something like this http://www.google.com.mt/imgres?imgurl=http://www.navtekindia.com/products/C6506.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.navtekindia.com/electronics.html&usg=__gZL9utMIfMdKMEAM-QPKHERK-OA=&h=327&w=146&sz=7&hl=mt&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=CbnpPTLKidtalM:&tbnh=145&tbnw=65&ei=LdK1TYCiF8yUOuXIoIUJ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dtrolling%2Bvalve%2Blever%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dmt%26sa%3DG%26biw%3D1680%26bih%3D855%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=462&page=1&ndsp=45&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0&tx=38&ty=67

So true. If engine is not configured to go down to 1knts, excessive slow trolling with the help of a bucket can cause overheating and probably seizure of the engine.

having a small outboard helps, but i wouldn't rely on the bucket there is the current issue you will not always troll in opposing current

trolling valves are good to use provided that you don't forget them operative when you increase speed.
