Title: Catch reports 2011 - Alongi
Post by: The_Gaffer on June 14, 2011, 15:25:16 CET
Any catch reports of Alongi for this year worth writing about.  are they here?...heard some were caught on a trip to lampedusa last week, about 60Nmiles off Malta.

I have not heard of any catches yet by recreational fishermen, but that does not mean they are not out there, its just a case of people waiting for catch reports to come in before they dare go out on an Albacore trip, which is significantly more expensive this year. The best way to find out is to give it a shot, i'll be going out next Tuesday and maybe this coming Saturday.

Should be out as well on Saturday, coming down the East Coast from Xemxija to the SE grounds.

I will be on Ch 67 to test it out as it will be the official tournament channel for contacting the Tournament Director and Support Boats on the day.

Hi Guys, we went out this morning from Wiedilghajn but Alongi did not want to bite. We trolled maybe for 2hrs but nothing. However early in the morning we had great fun bottom fishing where we caught over 20 Bazuk and a nice cintorin and also a nice merluzz. Good fun!

Prosit Mayer.  A friend of mine was out today, trolled 20Kmiles out from shore.  No hits whatsoever.  Seems bite is slow this year.  maybe the sea temp is still slightly low towards the coast of malta, and one has to seach beyond the 20kmile mark maybe sea temp is slightly higher!!

Prosit Mayer, just goes to prove that in these early days might as well carry your bottom fishing gear to make the trip worthwile.

Also worth bearing in mind your skipper was under pressure to get you and company into some fish Trolling for Albacore even in the peak of the season may not yield any strikes in the earlly hours, many times I have chased Albacore and had no strikes until late morninig and in most cases multiple strikes, it's a matter of perseverence but in your skipper's case he used good judgement and went for plan B.

Went out today , landed two nice Albacore around 10 Kg each. Apparently it was a late morning bite for us, as both fish were caught within minutes of each other at around 10:30 am.

We got one late morning Saturday just before 1pmaround 3nm out from Freeport . Was only around 6kgs so catch and release, but at least my wife got to see the whole process.

We spent around another 90 mins trolling after that on first ridge but no strikes.

Tried 2day early morning for around an hour only but no strikes. Well I just went out 3 miles from cirkewwa. Its more that I tried my new gear :)  Btw this was my first attempt for alungi :)

Try 4.5nm out (1st Ridge) bearing 253 degrees from Cirkewwa point.

Then follow a bearing of 190 degrees and you should be over the 1st ridge moving left and right intersecting it.

There's are 2 excellent slips in St. Georges bay, birzebbuga. However gnejna is fine and you're in alongi territory within 20 to 30 minutes.
