I reckon deepsea should write an article in the techniques area about bottom fishing as quite a few of us are interested and certainly I have no clue.

Interested?

Good suggestion Skip. I hope Deepsea agrees and finds some time to share the knowledge without divulging all the secrets. As a start it would be nice to at least have the generalities of this method of fishing from someone who has successful catches like Deepsea.

Sure I will find some time to write this article...probably by the end of this month.  In a nutshell, I go fishing in the region of 350 - 420 metres.  The catch always depends on the currents....if the currents are 'good' then the day is promising.  I use winches and electric reels, depending on the type of bottom fish and the bites you get....the bait I used to catch the monster above was fresh prawns, beleive it or not...anyway, I will let you know all techniques I know of, required equipment, bait and also the best way to find the right spots...

Wow so your boat is geared up with winches and you own Electric reels? That's expensive kit. What line are you spooled with.

actually boat is geared with one winch and we have 2 electric reels spooled with .30mm DAKRON (like Fireline / Trilene) supporting more than 50Kg.  We use the winch to pull up the bottom long lines or when we use single bottom lines (k.a. hjut in Maltese). For hjut we use cable wire supporting more than 70kg...
