Wow 4400 is a very good price for a 50 with power trim and tilt. Is it a 2012 model or perhaps older stock as sometimes happens. How long is the warranty on the Honda in Malta ?

I have an evinrude 40hp etec and i have 5 years warranty and 3 years on spray.

Nice thanks for the info good to know they are priced competively though I think they are still lagging behind in terms of warranty.

The best are suzuki!!! The latest model of suzuki 40hp are 8,000€ but the material they used it wont corrode even if you scrath the paint... And it wont have a belt the new ones have a chain!!!! But forgoet how much warranty they got..

Not sure how the others reason, but for €8k I would rather buy two engines @ €4.4K and keep one spare sealed in the garage unless my 8K engine has a min 5 year warranty.  Although Suzuki's lean burn system has won it the 2011 NMMA Award for Innovation

In Europe Suzuki should have a 3 year warranty (known as Pan European), Suzuki Marine UK site says that for leisure use they are eligble for a 2 year upgrade 3+2 so hopefully Malta does the same!

Dedin indeed that is an advantage of a 2 stroke based DI Engine like the ETEC and even Optimax from Mercury/Mariner.

But you still have the drive oil to change each season as a prevenative maintenance, especially if you would have done 100 hours! But that's about it, aside from fuel filter checking/changing if needed.

The engine can fog itself via the throttle or the Digital Gauge :)

And the advantage of the ETECs is that they go to 300hrs or 3years service free.

Ummmmm take that with a pinch of salt. I have to call a spade a spade......Service free is not an accurate description. Drive oil still needs to be inspected and only if contaminants are found does it need changing. But the engines are still supposed to be inspected each year, hooked up with the diag laptops, and visual check of filters etc.....

I know this is what they state:

No Maintenance for 3 Years / 300 Hours - No inspections or adjustments, no changing gearcase lube, no spring tune-ups. For a full three years, then every three years after that

And so yes you can technically not turn up at your dealer for three years and if you had any issues whatsoever he would be obliged to sort them out no questions asked....BUT still its a hassle. I would rather do basic inspection even if myself, greasing is still needed, and I would always change my gearcase lube every season especially if used for trolling. But I guess one could argue the 3 year point and not do it....

totaly agree with u Skip, even if they back their word of 3 years maintenance free, i would be very happy to take it to the dealer run a check up and replace whatever i think should be replaced like as u said gearlube oil and greasing.......if something happens after three years (that is if it actually shows) and they fix it it still wont be 100% so a bit of maintenance will go a long way to keep ur motor in tip top condition. even just for the peace of mind that I have a well looked after motor to take me there and get me back.
Guys when u are out there why dont u try to switch off the motor and pretend that it wont start to maybe realise what a bad bad situation u will be in, add to that a strong current (of course in Egypt direction ) and some breaking waves, no water to drink, no mobile service etc, .........

Also a good idea to check your thermostats for normal operation and clogging etc., and if you own an ETEC an annual check is a must, the plastic thermostat holders are impossible to unscrew after a couple of seasons (without destroying them and risking dropping bits of plastic in the cooling passages in the process)
Lets not forget spark plugs while we're at it. Inspect for excessive wear, check gap and burn colour. Also if it's an ETEC you cannot just tighten the plugs as you wish, you need to index the plugs according to the service manual.

A diagnostic test was always done at the end of each summer. I also check gearcase oil for contamination, internal fuel filter and also grease thoroughly grease points and also propellor shaft. Unfortunately I do not know anything about the thermostats that Guido99 is outlining. To be honest, in these 2 years I've had the engine, I never checked the spark plugs as I do not have the tools and knowledge to put them back properly. According to the manual, there is a very specific position the plugs has to be installed otherwise spark would not be sufficient. Up to now, touch wood, never had any problems with starting the engine. This year will be my 3rd summer and definitely would take the engine for a full service after the boat comes up from her mooring.
