To whom it may concern.
The Fishing Control Division invited Officials of Federazzjoni Sajjieda Dilettanti Malta to witness the draws for BFT permit for recreational fisherman.
The Federation officials will be present during the draw on Friday 4th of May.
All 48 applicants will be drawn, of which the first 20 will be given quota. Should any of the first 20 drawn drop out, be issued with an infringement or not have their vessel licence in order the 21st and so on will be given quota.

Hi Dr. Joe, when did the applications come out? It's true I don't often review the government gazzette but this time it would appear I completely missed them. I also think it's a bit disappointing that once again they will be working with a permit quota for x number of people, rather than registering all interested people and having an overall quota shared between all those who registered that decreases as landings are registered with the FCD.
From the 18 permits issued last year, how many actually landed a BFT?
Nothing was heard regarding the permits :(
This is all news to me. I guess it does serve us right, since we had all the time in the world tpo organise ourselves as a club, but nothing came out of it. I am infomed that all fishing clubs were infomed by the Fisheries. However, since the MFF is not a recognised club, we were left out in the cold. The has been a change in tnhe leadership of the Fisheries Control Division. Maybe this had something to do with it. We will actively follow this up with the competent authorities.
well said gaffer !!
Yes you are right. The MFF disappointment is similar to the bewilderness of the Federation and Associations.
Last Sunday the Federation held the AGM and during the discussion a couple of members queried why they had applied for the BFT quota but had no reply. The executive committee had no answer as the Federation was not informed of the application issue. I said I will call on the Fisheries on Monday. Then I was informed of the draws.
However it seems that 48 recreational fisherman somehow knew about this.
Gaffer is right that this is due to the change in Fisheries Directorate. In fact I had a hard time to explain and get the one day BFT permit for this year tournament as the present new fisheries administation knew nothing about last years competition despite all the correspondence and written permits which were done last year.
Unfortunately I have to say that part of the blame is of hundreds of recreational fishermen. Why not even one called on the Federation committee, local fishing Associations and MFF officails and inform that the applications are out.
Unless all amateur fisherman rally together the future is very gloomy.
Tomorrow I will email Mr Mark Gauci expressing our disappointment.

Email to Fisheries Contral Division re BFY permit Draws.
Dear Mr Gauci Piscopo,
While thanking you for the invitation to assist during the BFT draws , the Federation Committee is disappointed that FCD did not inform the Federation of the issue for BFT permit. Nowadays by just a simple email, information can be feed worldwide. Government gazette and Media are outdated.
Last year the Federation suggested a different and more fair way of issuing the quota but this seems also to have gone into oblivion without disscussion.
Well I will make my best to find members that can call next Friday. Please at what time?
Regards
Joe Carabott Damato
Federation Secretary
Director of Fisheries replied that suggestions brought forward will be considered.

I got to know from an advert in a newspaper.
me too!
So, without going into the merits of asking WHY, am I right in assuming that both Benri and Freedive here knew about this but didn't post this information online?
Draws for BFT have been postponed to Monday. In the meantime The Federation is seeking how events really took place.
Once the whole picture is evident then I will post the outcome.

Well done Dr joe

Some ppl here seem to take exception to what is written here. But guys, come on. Did you expect me not to say anything ??? ???. You knew about this, and no one had the decency of coming on to the forum and informing everyone about this. What kind of a society do you subscribe to :-\ :-\
You wanted to keep this to yourself, so you could take one and all??...I cannot understand this. 3 years ago I left it until the last day to apply for the recreational BFT permit. When I went to apply, the lady behind the desk said, "thank God, at last someone turned up to apply". I asked if I was the first one, and the lady confirmed. I immediately called Skip, informed him about this, and he immediately got on the phone a called a number of ppl here, informing them that it was the last day to apply for a BFT permit. That is the way things are done.

Knowing that the notice to apply for a BFT permit is out, and having knowledge that not everyone knows about it, and not doing anything about it, is cheap and low.
MAY I REMIND ONE AND ALL THAT IT WAS THE FORUM WHO NEGOTIATED WITH THE FISHERIES TO GRANT A TEMPORARY PERMIT TO CATCH BLUEFIN TUNA ON A RESTRICTED QUOTA.

3 snin ilu hallejt ghal ahhar biex naplika jien. Meta mort, it-tfajla li kienet qed tilqa l-applikazzjonijiet qaltli "ejja, f'hajja t'Alla, fl-ahhar gie xi hadd" ghedtilha nmela hadd ma applika, qaltli le!!. Mela issa taf, ghax jien iccassat iktar minnek. Jien ma kont naf assolutament xejn. Pero, cempilt lil Fisheries meta rajt il-post ta Gogo, bhala forum, u ghedtilhom din mhix gusta, allavolja ismi tela it-tieni wiehed is sena l-ohra. Shaqt li il-kwota ghanda tinqassam bejn dawk kollha li japplikaw, mhemx distinzjoni. Cempilt lil Dr. Joe Carabott, u ghedtlu ukoll. Dr. Carabott qalli li-Federation ilha tishaq fuq dan ukoll. Din id-darba, bil presssure tal Federation, waqfu kollox.
Pero irrid nghid din ukoll. Minn dawk li applikaw is-sena l-ohra, wiehed biss irregistra qabda wahda tat-tonn. Mela allura qed jigru dawn laffarijiet:
1. Mhux kull minn jaqbad tonna qed jirregistra
2. L-argument taghna li il-kwota ghandha tinfetah ghal kull minn japlika huwa argument gust, ghax minn 18 il-permess wiehed qabad wahda, allura hemm lokk ghal aktar spazju ghal sajjieda dilettanti
3. It-tonn li jinqabad mal fishfarms mhux jigi irregistrat!!
Li naf cert huwa li l-fisheries, fin-nuqqas ta rapporti konfermati ta qbid ta tonn minn sajjieda dilettanti, qed njikkunsidraw innehhu ghal kollox il-kwota tad-dilettanti, u jghatuha lura lis-sajjieda kummercjali. Xi kultant, nitfu l-gebla fuq saqajna!!!
Ma nafx jien...mhux ta bxejn ninkazza, ghax nippretendi kullhadd bhali ???

Hi all concerned,
Few weeks ago, the Federation and Fisheries Control Department have reached an agreement re BFT Recreational Permit.
The 1500 Kilo quota will be available to all participants until exhausted. Then no BFT can be landed.
It was also agreed that due to administrative misunderstanding between parties involved, last year participants will be accepted with this year applications.
Conditions will be forwarded to applicants by the Fisheries Control Division Officers.
Federation exhorts all permit holders to abide by the conditions so that what has been achieved will remain in the future.
Federation thanks the Fisheries General Director and Officials for their help and understanding.
Joe Carabott Damato (Gogo)
Secretary
For next year we will have to all keep a better eye out and then post up on the relevant sites. This system of sharing the quota is what we have been suggesting and pushing for quite some time so it's great to see it in place.
If you do have an authorisation, please as Dr. Joe mentions stick to the conditions.
