regarding bait the same rule for mostly everywhere the fresher the better I would suggest visit some local anglers shop and ask the locals, no one knows better than them about what is best for this time of the year. So good luck and tight lines.

What kind of bait are you looking for?

If its small sardines then Sicily is the place to be. They call it Sarda there...and its widely used as live bait.  I would consult the locals for some good spots.

If you are fishing in ports try simple white bread mush it with few drops of water until you have a sort of pastry or else go to a local anglers shop and ask for pastella great for mullet. Fresh squid is always good for bottom fishing cut it in tiny stripes and hook it as I told you above the fresher the better. When we fish in ports normally we use light tackle 0.20 mm main and 0.16 for the hook length.

If I am fishing in ports or from shore yes I do. I use heavier tackle only if I am fishing from high grounds, cliffs or from  a boat.
