Yes you need a licence from 30HP. First you have to apply at MCAST Maritime Kalkara to attend a weeks course and exam to get maritime licence. It's 30 Euros yearly for S registered.

thank you for the help.... and if i do the boat mfc i still need licence to drive it bec this boat is new..... and for fishing!!!!! not a power boat, but in malta is like this... we know them well.. tax for everything.... im asking this bec i had a luzzu for about 13years with inboard engine, and the power was more then 30hp and they never asked me for a bullshit licence.. im asking bec its been 4years now that i sold the luzzu, and to many things have change thanks to every one that can help me
Actually does not do any difference if it is MFA,B or C once the outboard engine is over 30 you need a boat handling course which will qualify you for a boat driving license. As far as I know when it comes to inboards it is rated on engine power in KW. You will find all information on the Malta Transport site. There are roamers that soon will be obligatory for 9.9s and over.
If you register MFC the licence will only be around 23 Euros (Lm10) a year. But you have to pay an initial fee to Malta Transport of about 465 Euros (Lm200) if I'm not mistaken, and pay the same fee again when you sell the boat to someone else.
Nothing to loose byger...Course at Mcast is very interesting & you'll enjoy all lectures..Still you will have to sit for an oral exam...but nothing out of this world...

That is what I had to pay 2 years ago for my MFC boat on the transfer. But apparently there has been a change in fees unless I am wrongly interpreting the table attached below http://www.transport.gov.mt/admin/uploads/media-library/files/fees%20as%20from%2011%20May%202012.pdf

I fully agree with TaKinu. Apart from interesting it is very informative and makes you more concious of safety first when out at sea. Go for the course Byger. It's really well worth it.

I've done it too and i really enjoyed it, plus i got to know a lot of people each with his or her own advices for easier boating that could come in handy.
