Few days ago i was offered the opportunity to buy a mooring at st pauls bay. Currently there is an 18ft boat using it, and i think it can hold a bigger boat. Anybody knows what price should be paid for such a place? Are these moorings legal?
@ shaft is it in the organised area or outside it........if outside you can buy it. on the other hand if in the organised area it cannot be bought (at least legally)......price is what u are willing to pay.....
most of the moorings can be taken by the authorities at any time. even if the mooring is registered with TM. The permit says TEMPORARY MOORING.
yes rodfar u are right and u have to apply every 2 years to renew the permit but I have not heard of a case where it has not been renewed.........
Since i'm not familiar with the area until now, may I ask what is a sensible price to pay for the mooring? Like usually what is the price paid?
It depends where exactly is the mooring, how far out, shelter etc.... eg. some moorings under Gilllieru outside the menqa (between bugibba and sirenes waterpolo) can be in the region of €1200.
Thanks Benri! Now i have an idea.
@shanook: but still in those 2 years TM can decide to take your mooring if for example they are going to make a marina.
oh that can happen with all moorings as they are all temporary..........heck the gov took a piece of land from us to make a stairway right in the middle of our plot....cant imagine whats to hold him from taking a mooring...............

yes it did happen but by law the government granted:
a new mooring at the marina at a subsidied (really worth it) price,
Who wanted to sell, Eur 15,000 compensation.
This happened with birgu moorings
I would say the compensation is very fair on moorings
ask about gzira.
Birgu moorings went to a private company, and Camper and Nicholson probably had the money to afford such a payout so I doubt that would occur elsewhere. The bottom line is that no one actually owns their mooring because all they paid for was the concrete block and the cost to put it in place but not much more! Hence I think the probability of it just being taken is very high.....
That being said it also becomes a politcal hot potatoe and when it was going to happen in Xemxija I heard that those who had their Temporary mooring registered with TM would be given first preference and perhaps as Granitu mentiond a discounted rate, but didn't hear anything about compensation.
I have been into the law regulating moorings to advice a client and myself having just bought a boat with a mooring.
Whilst they are temporary, there is still law that protects the permit holder.
However, it is clearly shown that there is a difference in treatment between regulated and unregulated moorings... regulated moorings have naturally more rights and power of say since normally they are located in favourable strategic places.
Lastly, may i point out that regulated moorings can only be transferred under the condition that the boat holding the permit changes owner. there are
some exceptions but essentially it is case by case
Thanks Granitu, from the research that you did, are you able to confirm which areas are considered as regulated moorings?
really don't know if i should cry or laugh.i'll try both!
Skip, I can't tell you exactly all the locations of the regulated moorings but I might be able to get you a detailed reply tomorrow as I will be meeting a TM official that takes care of these matters.
But basically, sheltered moorings by breakwaters like in Bbugia San gorg and St Pauls bay are regulated moorings. There is an assignment of the mooring by exact coordinates and regulated by boat sizes.
Moorings outside Bbugia Breakwater for instance are unregulated moorings - Normally there is no assignment by coordinates and they are registered volontarily by whoever laid the mooring.
Tomorrow I will try and get you a list. One important note, since the permits are temporary, by the matters of law they cannot be traded unless for certain exceptions.
anyone "buying" a mooring permit should ask to see the permit and check whether it is transferbale with Transport Malta.

100% agree. Always check with the source and do your analyis. It can avoid you unpleasant surprises. Afterall, All you need is a call and from what I can recall from personal experience the guys working at TM on moorings are very helpful and understanding.
Thanks guys, will do!
