This was a good catch this year! Caught about 9Kg Octopuses, 8 Awratiet (Guided sea breams), Mulett and a Sargu (White bream).
Hope you like my photos. I will soon post more if I am lucky enough. GOOD SPEARFISHING ALL OF YOU GUYS!
Some very good spearfishing man!! Really well done and nice pics!!!
Thanks.
Very very nice!! Well done!
In the pic showing a white bream, two blue runners and a brown wrasse, were the blue runners caught together with a single shot?
Yes it was a lucky shot there were about 30 in the shoal. Gabuni ghoqda man!
Jien taf x'igibni ghoqda...xi flixkun whisky!!! ;)
I haven't been very lucky with blue runners; the first time I saw a shoal of 2kg+ ones I had decided not to take my speargun with me to spend some time on the shore with my gf - that day was incredible - as soon as I stepped in the water, in about 1.5m - 2m deep, the fish started coming from everywhere. I also saw some very nice white bream that day. A short while later the blue runners came again! Another day, I was aiming at a smallish gilthead sea bream and all of a sudden a shoal passed really close...too close to shoot in fact...so I had to shoot from a very awkward angle and missed the shot >:(
Congrats once again - great catches!
The same thing happened to me. Once I went swimming only at St.Peters Pool Delimara and had nothing with me except my goggles and I saw a big quantity of white bream and good size. I went the morning after with all my equipment and only saw some small ones. The day I saw them maybe they were attracted by jellyfish.

do you remember the month? and how was the weather, the wind and if before there was a storm?
Quote from: Arti2 on December 22, 2007, 11:16:45 CET
I think it was august and the wind was south west and there was no storm that month some moderate rough sea only. That day me and my friend saw a strange small fish in the surface. It was silver striped with black and had red feather like fins and one red feather like thing on its head. I managed to research some info on it but could not find any similar pic on the web. As it was like half dead we could grab it with our hands then we let it go. The mistake I made was not to take a photo of it. But I think it was a kind of tropical fish which comes with ships coming from abroad.
its a cornet fish. jast this week i saw about a 20 ones near from where we caught the white grouper but they use to ran away. We caught some and simonG says that its really nice if cooked in the oven
But cornetfish do not have red on their head...
cornet fish
Is this variant more similar to what you saw? It's from the Sciaendiae family - a distant relative of the meagre.
Today I went spearfishing. Caught 5Kg(Total) Octopus, a seabass 1Kg 200g+, a small bream which is not in the pic and a green wrasse (also not shown in pic).
Another pic of the seabass.
Hello again. Today I went spearfishing again. I caught 7kgs and some fish shown in the pics.
The fish.
Proset Arti2. Nice gurbel. Whats about that 'Gharab'. How is their colour. A bit strang cos look too black. Are they caught from the seaweed?
No I think the colour is because of the mating season. In the water they looked very bluish. I think they are males cause I had had a chance on a lighter coloured one which was plumpy, which I think is the female but I did not shoot as it will lay eggs.
Nice to see people taking note of the possibility of fish about to lay eggs and not shooting them. Helps perserve things for the future. Well done :)
i am not sure about the type of fish... but i don't think that fish mate before laying eggs! I think that after the female lays the eggs, the male will fertilize the eggs!
so maybe you killed the males and so the eggs will not be fertilized!
There were smaller males around dude. There was a kind of competition.
Thats why I left the female alone. And two of them was enough!
hehe that's fine with me :)
good philosophy though!
u prosit for your cathes eh!
reg,
Jonathan
You done the wright thing Arti2. If we continue to say cos this is a femail and this isa male, we will never catch a fish. If one sees a fish that seams that is with eggs, we will have to be responsable and not catch it.If then we says that cos of males use to fertilize fish, heqqqqqqqqqq....... what can we do???? Arti2 caught the ammount he needed to eat, so I will never say that he made or can do anything wrong.
Simetimes I use to catch baracudas and even somethimes when they are small they are with eggs and this is from january till august, so what can we do???????? The only thing is that one should be responsable for the fish he catch, even ifit is caught by a speargun or a rod.
The thing is we can choose what we catch that is size. But greater damage is done with nets near shore. Even anglers from shore sometimes catch small fish like tiny beach combers, wrasses breams, eels. What comes out from the water stays in their bucket. And sometimes even tiny groupers! And after the day they spend fishing they give them to cats! I don't blame these anglers because there are quite few fish near shore but they have to bear in mind that some fish can grow bigger if not caught by nets!
I agree! I've seen alot of anglers with a bucket full of tini zabri for example! or tiny sargi/sparli/xirgien!! Ok cat's have to be fed but there is no difference for them between a cawla and a zabrijja! On the other hand cat food is not that expensive! I also saw spearfishermen carrying tiny fish like groupers or zabri! They can grow man... so let them live!
Nyways I am sure there are alot of men out there who are doing the right thing...
However, the worsts enemy to our sea are the fish nets (parit kemm mil gholi u kemm mil baxx)!
Let's get big fish!! haha
regards,
Jonathan
Is there any law on nets? Like a lot of times i meet pices in the bottem and its bad to see it. A month ago I was in the gozo port and there was a broken net. I could had counted 6 or more xilep, dead and all with busuf around them. Not a nice thing. Also for us, its really easy to be caught in a net. It sound stupied saying this but its true. Before I didn't ever felt a problem about to be caught in a net but now yes, i do. We se so many nets around that if we make pics for sure we will rise this problem.
2 weeks ago I was with a buddy diving at Zonqor point. He was doing the 10-12mtr deep and i was on the 18-22mtr maybe i see a white grouper. Whats a grouper!!!!!!!!!!! In a time when I was near the bottem I was surpriced, I saw the net just in front of me les then 6mtr and all you can see is the floats. The net was ment to catch sargi but come on???? This net was maybe 50mtrs from shore!!!
Its not cos of law or of somthing, but also for turisim. Lets say those turest that come to visit Malta. By the shore the only thing they can meet is the jellyfish, and all small other fish cleand up by the f.... nets. We dive all year long and if a picture has 12 sargi, one have to know also tha we do more then 120 dives and we do not spear fish if it is'nt with a good probability of the catch. For 12 sargi we meet letsay 500. The fish that we catch is only by good technick of moving around rocks and doing long aspettoes.
The thing of the anglers that go for small mullets, vopi and cawl doesnt bother me a lot. But when I see a grouper of small size it bothers me. Somethimes I do mistakes and spear a small groupers but if they can go, its better to leave them. Somtimes in cave hunting especially when using a bullet spear, one can easy catch two fish on a single shoot, and as you knowin cave hunting is difficult to have a good view of the cave so when we catch a grouper or even a gurbell smaller then our poportions we use to leave him away if he can get up.
Last time that Jon109 and I went to gnejna,i saw a grouper of around 1.5kg. I had estemated as 2-3kg. Whent for a small gun and asked jon109 to come on me fr safety. I went down and shoot. It was in 15mtr, and as I was trying to get it out it went out from the spear and jon109 sawher entering under another rock and had estimated smaller. He told about the thing and agreed that was better to leave it and so we did. Heq somethimes we do mistakes but if we can go for better why not!!!!???
ps. Now with a new under water camera. Hope to catch some nice pics. Last time I took a small video of a baby cornet fish but was without battery so the video it too small.
EmicMalta is right! When i told him its around 1-1.5kg he suddenly suggested to leave it alive and obviuosly I agreed!
These Nets are killing our sea but fishermen only think about the money (which to a certain extent we cannot judge as its their own living!!).
So I guess the situation will remain the same! Till now, the situation is not really bad! But who knows, maybe when its really bad the government will take action... JUST hoping it won't be TOO late!
Nyways, Edward have fun with your new underwater camera ehh! Hope to see some good shots of yours... let us see Mr. Carbon in action once again :)
regards,
jon109
I am 55 and compared to my younger days It is late. As EmicMalta slyly put it "what is a grouper" Yes Emic we used to find good sized groupers in those days, now its like finding manna when you meet with one. The gov doesnt do anything about nets (loss of votes i presume). What people dont see it does not hurt. We need to protect the sea and people like u who make a difference when u leave alone small sized fish. Well done.
I am only 33 but even i notice a BIG difference & not just in the finer species like grouper & snappers but even the bogue! I remember when i was a small kid of 8 or 9 all through my teens going to blata tal melh and catching the large bogue in large quantites and also Fomm ir-rih was Full of kahli and all kinds of fish.I also remember going for family bbq's in ghadira and just casting a rod in with a bit of snail or squid and just leaving it there for a couple of hours and when you went to wind in it was guarenteed you'd catch a big spnotta or gurbel...
i think the nets do mess up the fish stocks as they kill off the juveniles too quickly, and the law's on this type of fishing is way outdated (1935-8) regarding where nets can be put down also the law about mesh size is not enforced.
But one the worst has to be the commercial trawlers which are allowed to operate so close in to the coast despite this being illegal,as they are not only destroying the fish stocks but also the seabed in the process.
Its true we need to protect the sea,and people like emicmalta are to be applauded & probably a lot of people on this forum do the same, but at the end of the day unless the goverment (irrespective of poilitics) gets serious about this then its only gonna get worse. What a crying shame :(
Next net I meet I will take some pics of it and then give your openion

hej jon109, its a bit late in time for the camera cos the Ajs had left and you saw the shoots on Ajs (maybe I find the last few on a hidden reef maybe their nannas are still with them as I got a good hint from a friend :) ), but for sure I will give up with the big millets
hehehe
only the seabad hint I can give in the video :)
here are the nannas :)
Aj caught this summer by a friend
Small fish are still being cought all the time, last summer I was spearfishing with 3 friends of mine near Ras il Wahx. We had cought nothing except 1 sargu, 1 large morina and 2 murlini between the 4 of us. That day there were no fish around except a few groupers we had seen in there holes that all were well under 1 Kg.
When we got tired and were returning back to get out from the water, saw a terrible act being done by a group of men! We saw a diver with tanks and all, spearfishing these tiny groupers and another 2 men on a small dinghy moving above him to assist him! He had already 3 or 4 tiny grouper already in the stringer all weighing less than 500grams!!! We were very angry as we had left these fish alone, and here comes this selfish person who killed them!!!
Sometimes I also saw some anglers do this, with some small grouper who had bitten on their hook and it wasn t released back!
We shouldn`t be selfish, these fish should be left to grow!

These f.....n guys are using the cylinders in a wrong way and and its like nothing. Now there should be new law or had enforced it. Don't know exect but for sure one cannot spear fish by cylinders. It isn't sport like that. Its like collecting things. That looks really bad when one leaves fish like groupers after him cos are small and see that others chech them. Please try when seeing these things to makehim consiance of his abuse and if it is possible go and tell him. We meet a lot of good guys on slipways on their way on doing scuba for fishing but when we tell them about the problems, it seems like we are telling them that they are too bad. The words that always say are "look at these nets...................". No its not good that we have all around with nets but also we went diving after scuba divers. They leave all way clear of fish. There are guys that I know that go for 1 grouper a day, but there are a lot that use to take out also the last gurbell and sargu.
If its for busness for sure it will not remain as a sport There are persons that in 5, they use to catch more than a 500kg of fish at 50mtr on one day. They use also to make 3 dives a day. For me thats the worst thing that persons could do to the sea. They empty all the mating caves and if this will not stop in 1-2 years this will finsh the maltese fauna. Thats why
martinB said about the missing fish. With apnea fora maximum we do 13-140dives for a 8hr dive. In deep its hard to make 20 dives, so cannot make any harm to the fish. But with cylinders you walk in a fish corridor and just picking the fish with cave hunting :(
I totally agree with you EmicMalta. But there is no one who takes care of these guys and confiscates there equipment because the law is not enforced. Even the nets. Last time I was at Delimara near powerplant gates, there were anglers fishing from shore and they told me there is nothing to catch. After a few minutes came two luzzu and collected their nets just in font of these anglers near the moll. These guys of the luzzu were from Marsaxlokk.
When they smell that there is something like awrat escaping or when there was a season full of small blue runners they come everywhere to throw their very long nets. The throw in Birzebbuga, Qajjenza, Marsaxlokk, Delimara near Powerplant and all Delimara near shore.
Is it possible to take serious action with these guys and tell authorities!
If so do you know any phone numbers?
My father was fishing near the shore at Delimara. Suddenly came one of these guys to throw his net.
My father told him that he is fishing and that he can throw his nets not so near to the shore. What do you think was his reply :I LEAVE IT FOR YOU he told my father.
My father told him SEE IF YOU LEFT ANY!
Just wait for tomorrow and see :-X :-X :-X :-X
Once I saw many large AJs near Delimara Powerplant near the intake of the plant before the small sandy beach. There was a good amount of them. 2Kgs ones. When they knew about them they came and caught every single one with a net!
How are we expecting to catch AJs!
We only catch one, maximum of two from a shoal.
These guys catch all and are business minded!
Something has to be done guys!

That's why I don't like to fish in that areas. All full of net and doesn't metter if there's a diver or someone. They just work and all the net catch it could be sold. Yesturday I went to a fish shop to buy some vongole and saw some srgi and kahli. 1st of all I think that even a cat will not eat that rubish of fish. Was too dry by the use of entering from frezer to another. But the point was the fish was of around 9cm. Immagine who could buy these fish? and for what? Maybe it brings Lm2kg these small cos only maye for a soup can be used. Come on!!!! These come from the fish market at valletta so no ne matters. Its fish that is shown in public
like it was said in preivous posts there is an old law for nets. they can throw nets near shore only for a short time they cant throw nets in bays or ports. and there are trawlers that can trawl from 3 miles from shore. they have all the permits. its true maybe nothing can be done because only people like us see that everything is being destroyed by these people and we are a minority. all the other people dont know what is happening. maybe we can come up with an idea to make other people aware of what is happening
Something should be done immediatly, at least at the markets to stop these people from selling these small fishes.
In Gozo at a particular restaurant catering fish had a full display of different groupers all smaller than 11 inches. Its shamelfull!! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o Soon nothing will be left in the sea! >:( >:(
The authorities are in some nice, dreamy sleep I think!!
Before I said, "wait for tomorrow to see".
This eavning Ive been at MArsaxlokk buying some staf from Gorg. Then I went to the Power station to take a look how was the visibility. I counted 7 trowing the net. One of them was so clossed to the shore with the trasperant net that the floats where in the surface. Here some pics
Like busumark mentioned there was a couple of posts about this before on the forum and the question of the nets and trawlers is unfortunatley not gonna be solved overnight...there is too much commercial interest involved & also the authorities are not enforcing the law, so obviously the people concerned are not obeying the law when it siuts them not too! its as simple as that.
The markets is another thing where if people are going to buy those fish then they will continue selling them, but i think this is also a case of the majority of people being ignorant of fish species and the conditions of fish stocks etc.
For example i have seen hawkers selling a hanzir as cerna,at marsaxlokk market i saw a big xilpa being sold to some poor woman as kahli!! also the thing emicmalta mentioned of people buying fish in terrible condition and VERY small sizes.
Also i think the thing about the scuba divers is dispicable, personally i have never really liked the idea of spearfishing with scuba gear as i dont think its gives the fish a fair chance, and as far as im concerned its NOT sport at all
Infact guys, I think we have to re-think our strategy with regards to giving exact locations of where the shoals are. I think we should keep this information for ourselves, or at least pass it on only via private messages. Now with the 3 Euro Internet Scheme, even the Fishing Net guys will have internet!
Ciappinu to be honest i was talking to a friend of mine about this very point you mentioned and i realise it defeats the purpose of a forum to share information but as you pointed out at least we can send PM's to people who a genuinley intrested in catching a few fish for sport and not to drop a net a catch everything in sight ;)
i agree with this.... but the situation is degenerating guys...today all you need is a gps and a fishfinder and you are done... something needs to be done it is ridiculous that we are in 2008 and these f..... are still doing all this. some throw the nets for a reason, that to save up gasoline. it is unfair both with us and their customers that from the occasional fish you find xilep for sale normally at a lm1.50 guys. If by chance i have time to upload some photos I will show you tray full of small awrat... now that's why there is no awrat.
Even for us, the sport fisherman, catches considerations are to be treated dilligently and care must be taken when choosing the fish to take to home. for sargi, for example, I don't take species at home smaller than 500grms. recently we had the opportunity to catch a decent sargu ta l imperjal....we left him living because it is rare in Malta.
These theives are a few people and many of them I know are from the south area (just imagine from where they are...piece of cake) and once they see a sport fisherman catch some fish(mullet, small amberjacks, even some xilep!)..... they throw the nets. sometimes they even send children on small dingies( a friend of mine fishes mullet there nearly everday; he saw them and i know he is not a liar). Recently I was talking to a fishhawker at marsaxlokk...he was angry because the fishfarms at birzebbuga became enclosed recently and he can't throw his nets near the boundaries! he was the guy selling small awrat :-[unbeleivable!
I know many people who are naturalist and are concerned about this situation.... doing something together can save our fish stocks.
any ideas? enough talking guys more action,it can be in vain but worth a try, it s about saving our fish in time.
I was thinking of a petition but does not seem that radical and presenting it to the concerned minister
Regards, Nicholas
what about writing a report of these facts and presenting them to the opposition party/tv station in the name of Malta Fishing Forum? Obviosly this has to be done with an agreement with the owners of this forum!
another possible thing would be presenting the report to the Minister of the Environment!
There is a big number of members on this forum so maybe we could make a difference!
regards,
Jonathan
your idea John is very promising..yet the maritime authorithy should have done reports.my worst fear of a report is that they might say... it is just a piece of paper
good idea if we start by doing some kind of report.
I will also try get the help of the kingfisher sport fishing club with around 50 active members into the issue.
::)
10x placebo that can really help
regards, nicholas
i suggest we ask and enquire the present rules about fishing with nets.
then we proceed accordingly. I think that if we unite and pressure authorities for sure it is not permissible to throw nets about 3mtrs from land.
we have to make reports to authorities. whenevr i make my report it's always the day after that they come patrol the area. i think they can do it. For example if we target pretty bay there's always a standby patrol boat for illegal immigrants , i guess they can find some time to do so0me good checks about the situation.
yeah that would be great! if someone has sometime and has any experience of submitting a report to the authourities please give us some tips... A good petition in addition to the report will be a plus!
I am sure that our argument make sense!
Lets group up and do something before it's too late!!
regards,
jon
PS* the administrators can open a topic with these arguments and move some of these posts on it...
Guys, I'm open to any suggestions ref: new boards or topics on the forum to address this issue. Btw I wanted to clarify that the Fish Alerts section has restrictions in place to try and protect the misuse of some of this info.
They are:
GPS Co-Ordinates limited to Active Contributors only (min 20 posts), plus Friends of the MFF and special designations.
Alerts, Inshore Sightings, and Catch Reports/Experiences are on Basic (min 5 posts). I can if you all feel this is best adjust those to Active (min 20 posts), or even Seasoned (min 50 posts) but that might detract a bit.
The other option to consider is having it as a closed user group, ie. Restricting it to say special members tagged Friends of the MFF. That way its not based on posts but I will have to specifically grant access to individuals and we can keep better track of it and the way in which the information is used.
I am open to suggestions. To be honest I was thinking its about time we had some kind of General Meeting maybe over an Ikla someplace where we can discuss such points.
Let me know.
Regards,
Skip
yeah, that seems plausible enough as idea. As many of you may notice, I, together with many others(not talking on others behalf), don't share my fishing places with you, not because i don't trust the forum members, but because I don't trust the system. anyone can reach 20posts.
As other's stated, now internet is and will be readily available for others, including those whom they never accept leaving empty handed like some Mxlokk and Bbugia fisherman who ruined pretty bay.
But i am glad to note that finally this point is moving on. Anyone who needs my help(even for a fish!), just send an email to njf100@hotmail.com and I am more than willing to help to save our seas.
I agree with both of you, Skip and Granitu. I am an active member, and as I think I one of the most to go diving in apnea. I give gps points in this forum but always with a private msg to members I know that they do only sport fishing. And the places that I tell are always with good fish in certain places and in certain part of a reef.
I like the idea of Skip to meet up in someplace or a meal somewhere. Also we meet in summer and can redo it in winter. We meet here each day, but nothing is nicer to have a talk with each other and a nice meal. Also like this we can see whose in the forum and what kind of members we are.
The easiest thing to do would be a sort of application form to access to the fish alerts section where you have to be referred by an existing member who has access to this section. In this way the existing member is essentially vouching for you, by knowing who you are and what type of fishing you do. In that way more information can be 'securely' posted there as opposed to private msgs.
It would be the type of thing that is discussed in person with everyone before being implemented on the forum. The number of posts concept was a start but as pointed out its easy to get a few posts and then get access to the info.
Skip
I think the idea of being refered by a member of the forum for access to fish alerts section as outlined by skip is a good way of securing the information for people who genuinely want to use it for sport fishing activities and prefreable to having loads of PM's flying all about the place.
Also as granitu pointed out whilst i have been sharing the location of where ive been spinning the only reason for that is as busumark & me once mentioned in a few posts that there is already an abundance of nets put down at blata tal melh anyway and they have been doing it for as long as i can remember,so its not as if im letting the 'cat out of the bag' so to speak :)
However when the plamti/kubrit finish i switch over to more usual type of shore fishing till the water warms up a bit and then obviously i wont be revealing locations either for the same reasons as have been outlined or till this issue is resolved.
Again its not i dont trust the members of this forum,in fact quite to the contrary, its just the easy accessability of the information at the moment.
yep i like the idea of meeting someplace for a pizza (matter of speaking) and a chat. then we can discuss the matter better as Malta is small and everyone knows one another. Only one thing when the eatout is decided, please Skip, email us as sometimes members are busy and might miss the event.
Yeah me too i think its good idea also be good to put faces to names :)
ready and waiting to meet some members, in fact looking forward to it
yeah, im down to it but my only problem is the fact of having no transport currently as I don't drive..i m trying to get the licence, hopefully in a few months time this won't be a problem....but i'm down to it i will try to fix up something with sergio, a forum member and a very good friend of mine(my fising pal ;) )

i know martin, blata tal Melh is an excellent spot for fishing but unfortunately it is overfished, a friend of mine is nearly a place dictiononary( Just a way of saying it ) of places around Malta. at gozo there are some better places for spining though....
good idea to meet and talk couldnt come in summer but if i am not workink night when you organize something i will come for sure
i have the same problem as i work nights sometimes too but i shold be able to organize something with a bit of notice in advance
i can arrange when ever its suit for all of you

Hi granitu i wouldnt exactly call it overfished but it certainly see's its fair share nets! i think i know exactly where you are talking about in gozo :-X i went for a long weekend break in november and caught a few nice plamti from there and ive also gone there for lampuki in the past and done VERY well..... ;)
I know you know, what kind of spinning fisherman doesn't know that place for spinning...
and its far more easily to go there than to go to blata tal-melh
It would be if i lived in gozo!! & it btw it isnt qbajjar (if thats the place you are talking about) for the very reason you pointed out grantiu..everyone knows about it!!! and besides qbajjar is virtually impossible to spin there from late august onwardsin cos its always FULL of long lines for lampuki (& who came blame them!! :) ) it can be good though if you can get a good spot....
Hey skip it seems every one is waiting for you to set a day for an evening out. regarding those without transport I am sure something can be arranged.....
We can def do some car sharing if people dont have transport. Let me create a post so that we can see where/when we want to go.
Skip we are still waiting for a day to meet and I am getting hungry .............
If someone have a place where we can do a bbq or doing them al cartacio, i can bring fish for every one and bemore relax. But need to hurry cos only for two weeks more I can bring some fresh extra extra extra big mullets. (from clean place e....) :)
If you agree i can hold some in freezer and prepare them really nice.
I've updated the off topic post. As its winter and pretty cold I reckon we should leave a BBQ for summer though it's a nice offer. Let's meet up for drinks and some light food this time around and hopefuly we can get a good crowd. But we need the venue.
its ok for me too.
I have posted all of my pics in the Gallery.
There are some pics which are not included in 'My Catches'.
On thursday I went spearfishing. There were no fish but I managed to catch two nice octopuses. One 5Kg700g and another 2Kg.

On Sunday I caught for the first time a cornet fish and I am gonna taste it! I also caught a nice seabream shown in the pic.

That Octopus is massive man! Great Catch.....looks like a monster of the deep or something. I would have been scared of that!
Well done Arti, for that super Octupus!!! and for the other catches as well!! ;)
Today, I also cought my first cornet fish, it think its becoming quite frequent in our seas as two weeks ago I also saw another one but was still small... Maybe its about time we shall give her a maltese name, like Kurunetta.. :)
By the way, before I read in the forum, that the fish was very delicious, so I am going to cook it. But today, when I was getting out from water an English tourist came to see what I cought and he told me that this fish was very delicious, but before cooking, one should eleminate the bones as they are poisinous... Has anyone heard of this?
I did not hear that. Emicmalta told me that he cooked some steamed or in the oven. But what I know is that it has a very good and does not have small bones only one long cartilidge in the middle. I removed the long head and tail. cut it in small pieces. Add some spring onion, garlic, mint. Cover with thin sliced tomatoes and potatoes, Some olive oil and some more herbs on top and put it in the oven for 15min 175deg and voila!
you told me that the octopus was big but you didn t told me that was huge. Woowwwwwwwwwww............... Really nice. Great job :)
Thank you! That's my new personal record.

X'zewg hniezer dawk ....... nice e. Keep it up.
Its been a long time since I caught one that size man. But this year I caught 2 from the same place exactly in the same spot. (Fil-bejta) Both same size. They were twins!
Today 28 July I went spearfishing, caught 6Kg500g Octopus, 2 seabreams and a brown wrasse. I had many chances for fish, but I missed alot! especially on a barracuda of about 2Kgs and a guilded seabream (awrata) of about a kilo!
And also I missed a small amberjack of about 2Kg. Shot well but the spear never arrived on target!
Will post pic later of this catch.
This is the Pic of Monday's catch. It could have been better.

On Tuesday I went bottom fishing with the boat with my father and had a good time at first. The pic is shown here. But then we had some probs with the motor and had to return.

what size of gun are you using?
90 and 75
with a 90 you can manage for sargi and sometimes an aj but its a bit short for the maltese water. I was asking you cos even with a 90 you do well
In fact if I had a longer one I could have caught a 2Kg+ Aj easily last time. The spear never arrived to target and fell down!
On the other hand I need to learn how to load a longer gun because I tried a 110 and I couldn't load, maybe the slings were a bit short!
at the moment im using a 21mm rubber on my 105 and belive me that it sreally easy. And to say it all im using the original one with the metal wishbone and as you know im not strong ;) ;) as you. Its just a small technick that one needs to learn when handling big guns.
But one of teh reasons is the back of the gun, some of them they hurt you and makes you bad markes as I use to make with my sporasub insctant 90. But like the cressi comance and the beuchat marlin elite they are really helpfull. Seahunter baught a marlin 105 last week and he can conferm on its shoots, its mounted with a 19mm rubber and with a small agreement with beuchat rapresentatives he had it with the double barb and 3 lugs rockwel spear. Its really nice. One of teh best ever saw. A 6.5mm and with the performance of a 7mm spear (by next week I will change to it) for good penatration. Everyone who knows me know how I like long shoots and this spear characteristics will help me for sure. With this 3 lugs its even more easy to load the gun cos with the 3rd lug its nearly in the middle so the 1st step can be done on the stomach
Since I bought the marlin I went only once spearfishing, but I found the marlin easy to handle in the water, and I tried some long shots succesfully.
With a third lug its much easier to load,as I am also not a big guy.
today don t worry seahunter cos will try it for sure on some sargi. yesturday I went and there was a lot but the current was too strong.
On Sunday altough I had the band. I managed to go early in the morning and spent only about 2hrs spearfishing I caught 4 white seabreams. Will post pic later.
Here are the pics of Sunday morning:

Once again Arti2 you've done a great catch :D
Nice one Arti2, I imagine the trill catching that on a rod!!
nice catch as always. Had you saw any more of this fish? was it chasing other fish? when I caught one this year, it was chasing "ic cawl" and I was doing aspettoes for seabass
All os a sudden the sea surface was full with blue runners, they were either chasing smaller fish or were being attacked by this fish. I swam towards the fish in the surface that's why I know they were blue runners. As the water wasn't so clear I couldn't see well and the only thing I saw was fish scales everywhere and I saw no fish to shoot on. Then I dived to the bottom and saw this leerfish (serra). I shot about 3 metres away and got it with the 90. As I have no reel and wasn't sure were I got it I left it taking the float. I hit it in the belly so it was a good thing not to pull it towards me. Then when it was tired I got my 75 and hit it better.
i think its better for you a 75cm gun, very light with a small reel, like saying can have 30mtr of line
But when I got my 90 instead of 75 I got more fish. You are right about the 75 though because its lighter to turn.
if you put .80 line on it with a 6mm shaft you get the best performance for you waters
Yesterday again I tried my luck. In about 3hrs I caught these:
Impressive. I take it you sell all that Octopus to restaurants right.
Wow wow wow.
I found this thread just now. Its a very nice representation of you Arti. Even though I do not know you, I admire your catches, and respect the fact that you post pictures.
I go spearfishing on a weekly basis, not so often as you do, but I ve been going for ages now. I never saw that amount of octo. To tell you all I am not so keen in finding octopus. But when you go fishing, either you go for octo, or for some other fish using other techniques. I am surprised how you do both at same dive. (One thing that ran thru my mind is the time that you go........and I cannot not ask?? was it night )
I am also a scuba diver, and I also practice it a lot. This may be a reason that I do not go spearfishing as often , as I have this other hobby which keeps me occupied. To tell you all, before I also used to go with a speargun, but since I have been doing spearfishing more professionally, I can assure you that the two things have been separated, and I am now catching fish on my underwater camery whilst diving. It gives you much more pride and satisfaction, knowing that you got fish with your talent, and with no other artificial help.
Whilst scuba, I usually try to discover fish attitude, but fish have a different attitude towards divers, especially in some places. I've viewed ceren, kahli, dentex at a few centimetres from my mask whilst diving. This is unimmaginable whilst freediving. Mind you, I was not hiding or aspetto with cylinders, I was swimming open sea. But I never saw this impressive amount of octopus. You should have a good place for it, and I am immagining the only plave that this might be.
It also seems to me that you do not dive very deep, and this also shows an improved technique, whilst teaching some other members not to give up.
By the way, one thing I do not like is the fact that you go alone.........Try to be safer. I know its hard to share, and to find a guy with your same time schedule and dedication. God knows how many times I did not go for this reason.
Anyway, good luck, and once again, prosit.
In the past I went with my father and really I enjoyed it together with my father. But from about 1995 I always go alone. One reason is that the more others know your places sometimes the more they come, they tell everyone. When I go with others it has to be a relative or one of my best friends or someone who shares his place!
When I have any chance I go. The fact that I catch both fish and octopus is that every place I go I remember particular areas where to search for octopus (bejtiet) and areas where to find fish like seabreams.
But sometimes its a matter of luck. My uncle tells me that if I dive in a well I also catch an octopus!!!
I had a good teacher my father!
I found out that there are particular times during the day when to catch fish. These are early in the morning, at noon and in the evening is good too.
Presently I found out that in the evening is somewhat better for seabreams. So I go at about 16:00, search some places for octopus and the remaining time till about 19:30 I concentrate on fish. Today I am going at 14:00.
Normally I go early in the morning like others do. I spend always about 8Hrs max and a min of 5Hrs, so thats why I catch both fish and octopus cause I have plenty of time to do that.
Another thing is that when I sometimes caught octopus fish come for food inside their nest and sometimes seabreams come too close for my speargun so..
Other fish like blue runners and amberjacks sometimes are attracted too to octopus so they come close too.
Thats why the catch is somewhat always mixed.
If I had a camera I consider taking some nice pics like yours.
Btw I like to catch a nice fish more than to catch an octopus.
Eh and if u want to ask me other things feel free to PM me.
Arti 2 as i was reading your post , ithought that i was writing it my self , cause both of us have the same beleives in spearfishing . i know that its not that safe to go alone like u said , but its very very hard to find d right buddy beleive me BAGHIRA. i ve started this sport when i was 10 yrs now i m 44yrs only one partner i had that we really clicked together , but unfortuatly he stopped a few yrs ago.
regards.
FABRIZIO.
It's true sometimes its not always easy to find a spearfishing buddy when ever you want to go. This summer I decided that I will dedicate it simply to spearfishing and although I dove with many different people, many a time I went alone. Although one cannot come to a conclusion that swimming in shallow waters alone is not dangerous, the risks of getting a Shallow Water BlackOut (SWB) decreases dramatically so when I go alone I stick to the shallows. I also would like to congratualte Arti for his catches, I once to use to enjoy catching octupus because that is one of the main reason I got into the sport. Today I rarely catch octopus because only few are of decent size and also when your hunting fish its difficult to keep an eye out for them.
hi guys,
your all saying good words but a for fish I don t care if I take people with me or not. I dive with a lot of guys, and strictly speaking the best I have are Giovanni, Simon G, Markcam, Freediver and Seahunter, not saying thatthe others im not good but or we dived only a few times or we are both captins where like this cannot work. I look at these guys as when there was needed safety they where always near me. I don t belive sharing places is that bad, cos as arti said there are instances where you have to make the dive and approach the fish and this comes only or by luck or by experiance. Lot of times Giovani used to see dentex where I couldn t see them, but why??? experiance!!!
About a month ago I went for a dive with Fabrizio. The first one together and we worked good considering that I was sick with the sinus. A thing I noticed in him was that he has a lot experiance, in every thing, places, breath, dive, approach and much more. I had a grouper in a cave and even like that he used to help me fining with the current. Small things but these make the perfect buddy.
Another thing is the free time, to get a buddy that meets your free time is hard, but if you trust your buddy and he does the same as you, then there s your buddy. At the moment me and giovanni have a nice grouper, over 35kg, I had the chance to go for it but then If i shoot it??? I don t see it fair if he does it with out me so I didn t go without him. Small things but when they are put up together that what makes friends. A thing that I like to consider as from a buddy, I don t like selfish guys, I m a person who gives a lot (as I feel) and when I see my buddy that tries to get the fun all for him, I just move apart. Maybe he does this without knowing but I don t feel comftable in the water so thats not my buddy
Good guys.
Its seems we all share common ideas.
I did not say that I never went on my own, but I stick to shallow waters as markam said.
I have your same feeling guys. Its hard to find a buddy. In older times I had a guy who is now in libya, and I really missed his company. Since than, I had other buddies, but most of the times problems arise, either due to thrust, saftey, time shedule, different diving depths, and other issues, and you stop diving together. I am presently diving with seahunter, and we really flicked good. We have very similair attitude towards the sea, respect small species, competitive but not jealous, and we try to help each other the best we can. If we see a fish, we coordinate who is the best to go for it, and other small issues that make a complete buddy.
Thanks to emic I met this guy. One other thing that I would like to do is, to share or get some more experiance from others by diving once with some other guys. I do not mean finding a buddy, but some single dives with other members of this forum. Maybe even getting to know each others better.
For this reason, I would like more of you to attend to the next BBQ guys. It will be held on the 3rd October. We could share more opinions there face to face. I do this voluntarily, but sometimes I get disappointed that many of the members never turn out.
baghira u have a baghira , me toooo!!!
Right pupu.
Mine was th 2nd one on maltese roads.
Very good bike.
those 660cc is it? make a friggin awesome sound and a super moto style! (Sorry for wondering off topic)
ha ha.Was browsing the net myself for some info on the bike.....it looks awsome ;)
Proset Guys...mohkom hemm
I agree 100% with Emic and Baghira. I think one should dive alone only in the shallows and when he has no option.
I know how most people think;
most people are afraid to trust a person with the places they found good,
also others simply won`t share techniques and views (they think that if they had to learn the hard way, they won`t help others) and that is wrong. If all spearos were like that, till today I still know nothing. The first few times I went with Emic he was all the time showing me errors I was doing, and when I stopped doing these errors, I improved a lot. I learned a bit more safety and better ways to approach fish. If you`re new some one has to help you or else you`ll just stick to the same errors. But from my experience, good buddies like Emic, are hard to find.
Time schedule sometimes also continues to discourage from diving with others, and that`s a fact. For example, myself, in the next 3 months I won`t have enough time to do any spearfishing or if I`ll have any it will be very limited to few hrs on particular days, but one has to try to find some one.
Lately, I went mostly with Baghira, a good buddy, for we have common time schedules and I think we are of the same level etc etc.
From this forum I also went to do some dives with Freediver, whom is also a very good buddy.
Catch Monday 29th September 2008.

I managed to catch 5Kg500g octopus and this fish:
I caught it to show it in the forum apart from good size. In maltese is called
Sawrella ta' l-Imperjal. I think it is rare to encounter it close to shore. In english it is called
White Trevally. It is somewhat similar to the
Blue Runner which in maltese is called also
Sawrella ta' l-Imperjal denbha iswed.
nice fish my friend I agree with you it is a little bit rare,in 20 years of spearfishing I only saw 2 of them.Caught one of them was about 3kg.Another thing you may be right that it is a SAWRELLA IMPERJALI but we call that KARANGIND. There are some differences between them.
Another big well done mate !! ;)
Chris 8)
I was talking with Doc. K. Bugeja and he confermd that its a Karangida
Very nice catch , have not ever seen one of them caught in Malta before. Have seen them on documantaries but never in Malta. I guess there is quite alot of spicies that migrate through Malta & we do not know about them.
carangidae of 1 kl to 1.5 kl i caught, but my record is a 6 kilos one theres a photo of it on d forum take a look at it charlie . :) :) :) :) ;) ;)
Yes I saw the photo. Nice one. Maybe they are becoming more common. Its a nice target too.

NICE CATCH!!! out of curiosity...are you dripping water on the floor? Your lady would get angry...LOL
No there is plastic on the floor. But still she gets angry. Ink is worse by the way. :)
Why don't you clean them at sea??? Much easier and less grumbling from wife. :)
Luckily my wife is very understanding and supportive. She even pushes me to take pics of trophy catches and to purchase any equipment which provides more safety and trophy fish.
yes and if u clean them at sea u will be feeding the fish as well not throwing away good fresh food..for fish that is
Yes the thing is that when you come out of the water, the last thing I think about is cleaning the octopus. Especially in cold weather. You look forward to go home and have a nice warm bath.

true
descaling and gutting fish is much faster in water. Scales come off so much easier.
As shanook pointed out...it returns some organics to the sea.
No mess at home.
Feeling of completeness...maybe some ancestral hunter instinct???
There is scientific evidence that gutting and descaling at sea preserves better the flesh. (Makes sense...freshwater against saline water - osmolarity, internal fluids seeping into rest of flesh) Actually these studies from the EU and US authorities are building onto directives for amendements in fish stock handling and tagging.
Actually I cannot understand why fish is bought by the kilo with the respective insides...I mean we don't eat the insides...why should we pay for the insides?
Take for example the salema...it is very sour in taste if not gutted immediately but if gutted immediately and the black lining is cleaned...it's flesh is not just palatable but tasty!!!!
My relatives state the fish I catch are much more tasty than commercial fish. Maybe they are just pulling my leg to provide more fish. :)
I always clean the fish on the way in, saves the hassle at home, apart from the fact that I can stand the smell of fresh fish just cought, but ones time starts pasing, the smell changes. The only problem as we use ice and salt water to cool the fish, by the time you clean all the hands are blue.

Hahaj!!!!!! Good one spnotta!!
Nice one guys.
Yep, now we also know that you also have a krups weighing scale, and next time, to be more specific, if you want to prove to us that you are not cheating, and that the scale is accurate, please supply us with calibration certificates in the next photo. :-)
Arti2, I suggest you carefully go through your future photos very carefully, as who knows what these guys guys may discover next, about you!!
It seems I am giving away clues to private eyes here!!! O.K. then no more sharing my photos with you. :o
Art if I may ask!
What suit, gloves and socks do you wear? Brands and thickneses please?
I am just asking because I have been freediving lately, and I really tried different kinds of armoury, but after about 1.5 hours I cannot feel my toes, and after some more time my foot is dead> Then its the turn of my hands, and obviously then the rest. I will pee in my suit a thousand times, and I can see that You dare to stay 4 hours easy.
I use 5.5mm effesub jacket Camo. An Aqualung long john 5.5mm. An under vest. Effesub socks 3mm and aqualung gloves 3mm which are full of holes now.
The Effesub jacket needs to be changed now as the outer skin is thorn. Effect of usage and sun. So I need a new suit now!
Last time I spent 4 hours but normally I spend more than that 5 to 7 hours and sometimes 8 hours.
wow :o :o .. 7 or 8 hrs did you ever checked if gills are forming behind your ears ;D. Thats a lot of time especially in the cold winter its impressive.
Impressive Arti 2 and five thumbs up.you re an octopus champion.
pps.If you see some cuttle fish leave them alone. This year the sae is squidless .perhaps the cuttlefish will meet my lure.i have no problem with the octopus although i caught two while spinning this year.joking.
Don't forget that when octo hunting one is constantly finning, searching and moving. Thus the body metabolism is elevated. If one had to swim constantly and heavily, one does not even require a wetsuit at all. In my teens (I was crazy and had a very high metabolic rate) my friends and I used to swim for hours in the sea (even in February) without a wetsuit.
The real problem is aspettos and hunting fish at this time of the year. Yes, one could shoot them in their nests but personally I don't find it really challenging.
Still I do not want to take away the credit of someone who can spend 8 hrs at sea at this time of the year!!! It is still a feat!!
The more you go the more you get used to it. Once I tried without wetsuit, it was at the end of April with my cousin. We spent only 30 mins and came out of the water with violet/blue lips.
Today I spent a good day at sea. Will post some pics tomorrow. And don't worry for the cuttlefish, mot even a sign of them same as for the fish.

I agree, somehow our bodies adapt to the depths and to the cold!!!! Maybe I would add "motivation" together with "perseverance" to the recipe.
I do not agree.
The body acts as a biological mechansim, and I beleive that the human mind can make the body sometimes adapt differently in certain conditions, but this is just for the people trained in this area.
Perseverance I do not beleive it helps (on its own), If you are trainded in some kind of discipline like yoga, I beleive there are ways.
Human bodies differ, and some tollerate more than other's, that's it. Simple.
human bodies differ it's true...it's written in the genetic code. Where did I hear this. LOL :)
Human bodies ADAPT to conditions they are exposed to in different magnitudes and rates But they DO ADAPT.
Let me give you a silly example... the first time you tried to play a guitar your fingers hurt but with time and practice enough keratin is built up on your finger tips to manage. Same goes to any sport of physical activity that is performed for endless hours.
There is solid scientic evidence regarding the two subjects...ie... human adaptation to cold waters and deep water by hard training of pros. There was also a study on Umberto regading the depths.
Unfortunately I do not have the vids/docs anymore...(formatted pc recently).
If you ever stumble on Umberto's vid is really worth watching it has a scientific background.
of course perseverence is not enough....there are many factors...fat content to name one....but is one key ingredient of the recipe.
To return to this topic subject My Catches......

Hi Arti2 how do you prepare the octopus before cooking,do you just cut the tentacles off or do you clean the whole thing? If so how do you do it? thanks.
Checked already....
Eat & burn but a litlle fat helps for the cold ;D
nice octopus arti 2 , theres some biggies around this time of year.
Arti, Just for curiosit...has an octopus ever caught you instead of you catching it (Saying this because they are almost as big as you the big ones hehe)
@ Redbus, you clean it before freezing. Its important that at least you freeze it for 24Hrs.
Then if its not a big one put it in the water and heat together with water. Before boiling, turn off and leave it to cool, if it becomes pinkish if not keep boiling. Remove the octopus and cut it in pieces.(tentacles,etc. and remove the eyes and mouth if you did not remove it earlier)
Then continue your stew or sauce. Altough sometimes I put it raw pieces with the onions. And cooking it slowly gives a tender result!

nice octopus arti 2 , theres some biggies around this time of year.
Yes, yesterday I caught 4 good sized ones.
Arti2 thanks for that but how do you actually clean it before freezing it? ???
Turn the head inside out. And then pull the ink etc....
(Teqlibilha rasha u taqla li jkun hemm gewwa sakemm tigi borza wehedha)
Turn the head inside out. And then pull the ink pouch, gills and cut other organs out...as arti2 stated you are left only with a clean head pocket... then pull out the eyes with a knife and the two part beak. I do this at sea and it takes me only a jiffy...no mess at home. :)
yea and apart from not messing at home u feed the fish. Its like saying thank you to the Burqax (painted comber) that usually gives the octopus away.....

I went yesterday by chance but I only got I seabream, one octo of 1.5 kilos, and another of .5 kilos, from selmun area, and I did 3hours in the evening in the water. The photo was not taken by myself, I received it by email. The shark is a filming prop and the bay is San Gorg.
Ah ok. My friend thought it was a real one. That's why I asked you.
My friend, sorry for the unintentional scare. :)
Something of the sort, would make it to the headlines as soon as a rumour is thrown at the crowd. :)

Nice catch, well done. That AJ was going about with that lure in its mouth?
No no. I found that lure so it was good for the pic!
were you diving near bahrija?
No no its a long trip for me.
Yesterday I went for about 2Hrs I saw about 5 ajs but they kept distance. I think the reason was because there was a barracuda nearby. Had some chances on breams but I didn't take them well!
The only catch was a 1Kg500 Octopus. There were many jellyfish. Some of them very tiny.
I heard that if you touch jellyfsh with something their reaction is that they release eggs and hence promote reproduction!
This week I tried my luck again.
On Tuesday 9th June I caught an amberjack and a seabream.
On Thursday 11th June I caught 2 amberjacks, 5Kg500 octopus (one of them good sized 2Kg300 for this time of year) and cuttlefish.

dude, if i was an octopus, i would seriously consider emigrating to a far away land
In fact next time I am giong for fish to give them some break. The thing is that they come in front of me!!!! ;D
ohhhhh so much octopus??? Don't you get bored?? Only octopuses.. Still amazing though how you succeed in all those catches// Some kind of octofinder.
are you trapping or using pipes?
good question 148148. Maybe he has some hidden 'tricks'
dynamite laced with poison
I do not use any special techniques. I just go for them when I go spearfishing. When you get used to the places you go for them, then you know where to search for more next time. With the experience I gathered in years my instinct tells me where to find them. Another thing is to use some 'friends' like the painted comber and wrasses which show you where the octopus is. One more thing is the holes they build with stones and crab left-overs they leave behind.
Ma nuzax xi teknika specjali. Immur ghalihom meta immur bil-harpoon. Meta tidra l-postijiet, tkun taf fejn trid tfittex id-darba ta' wara. Fuq esperjenza ta' snin li ghandi l-istint jghidli fejn infittex. L-brieqex u xi hut iehor jghinuk hafna taghraf fejn hu l-qarnit. Haga ohra huma l-bejtiet li jaghmlu u fdalijiet ta' granci u ikel li jhallu warajhom.

ohhhhh so much octopus??? Don't you get bored?? Only octopuses.. Still amazing though how you succeed in all those catches// Some kind of octofinder.
When it is a good season I get some kind of bored. But I catch them all year round. I prefer fish. And in past pictures I posted I had a few catches where I caught some fish. But today there are people hunting fish are know places for fish. I am better with octopus so..
If it is so, well many compliments.
To tell you the truth, I gather not much satisfaction with octopus catch (maybe you know what I mean), I get rather bored searching for them, and after I find a couple of empty holes, I give up.
You still amaze me, although my story is different. I try the more spearfishing places I can, and as regards fish, this helps, but as regards octopus, if you always go same places, as you said you get more acquainted with the hidings.
Even though I have to admit that at the end of the day, when I look in the freezer I loook more for an ocoptus to cook, since that I am not such a fish eating lover, (funny huh).
Guys it always amazes me that fish tend to love the same places. I do not know why. They seem to be always in the same spot even if you caught his uncle, brother or nephew some days before.
I can recall my experience with ''Sicc''. There is a particular spot from where it always produces sicc and if I do not catch at least one from thi spot I can row all the north side for nothing. This theory rarely fails. No scientific evidential base but purely statistically.
melieha, at times there are spots where fish find food, are a strategic shelter against predators, no mystery if they hang around near these places
There are places where there are currents and fish like that place for such currents in the water. As for octopus it depends where they tend to go. But I think it depends on currents too. At times I did not find anything and at a particular place ,the same day and at a later time you find an octopus after another. It like they are coming up from the bottom or migrating. Sometimes even fish do the same.
Last saturday I did like you, since I needed some cholesterol in the freezer, and since there are no fish around. So I decided to choose some shallows and go on my own, without any large guns, just the 90, a 60 and a octopuses 'ganc'.
I found a good spot, altghough very fished, and octopus were not nicely sized.
I was amazed how i came across a nice shoal of barracuda, just above me, but I had no gun in the hand. Then these 'Xilep' came to feed beside me and I got one, and also 2 cervjol where I got one of them, but got lacerated and left. This reminded me of you, and I said to myself, you see how he manages to get also some nice fish. Sometimes the fish finds you ,and not the other way round.
very najs man :)
