Title: Strange catches....
Post by: AlanPortsmouth on January 18, 2008, 20:36:43 CET
A couple of years ago I was in a text conversation with my son who I had taken out fishing a couple of times to teach him the basics - and this was just after his first 'solo outing' with one of his friends...

The conversation went something like this...

Me: Did you have a good time?
Him: Yes
Me: Did you catch anything?
Him: Yes
Me: What did you catch?
Him: A duck!

Aparently mid cast a bird had flown by and picked his hook out of the air. I must have spent a couple of hours giggling to myself thinking about him reeling in a bird much like bringing a kite down... :-)

Was wondering if anyone else has had anything else really unusual attached to the end of their line!

It has happened to me many times that Gulls attack my lure, especially early mornings in the Filfla Area. However I never managed to hook one up. I did however once hook up a dead gull by chance. Apart from being disgusting, a police boat came over to check me out exactly at the time I was bringing it in. I just cut the line and let it go.

Oh guys,

my strangest catch was a dead Bat in a river. I fished for catfish, and suddenly my line ran. Well, I pulled the line in and could taste somewhat softly. Well, unfortunately I couldn?t see andything because it was very dark, so I put my light on and so I saw the dead Bat in my hand.
You can believe me.....it was very, very disgustingly.

Another short story: Some friends of me binded a rubberduck on my hook when I was sleeping and throwed the line out. When I took the line in, it was a very good laugh  ;D

Best wishes,
uwe

Was trolling in fliegu and i had my line in the air, a gull had taken the lure. And for those that might catch one please make sure when you reel it in to throw a towel and cover the head as it can seriously hurt you with the beak especially when taking lure off as it will be close to your face.........Things I caught while trolling  ropes, plastic nets, plastic bags largest being a matress bag, fads (LOL), a tree (floating in October, one can imagine the number of lampuki we caught) and believe it or not the occasional fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! kidding.

Had plenty of gulls and sea birds going for my lures but never actually caught one , but once was about 25/30 miles out and had a handfull of robins come resting on my boat, as well as twice had two homing pigons resting on my boat caught them and gave them a lift back to malta and after giving them some water, relased them hope they arrived saftly back. could be one of them rewarded me with a splosh on my car (hehe)

Got me wondering how many of these birds are edible: I guess they must be;

An ex fisheries minister from here (Lanzarote) was caught last year poaching sea birds of a small island off the north coast. This was after he'd been sacked earlier for taking over-weight of certain species whilst fishing.

In both cases his excuse for flouting the laws he was meant to enforce was 'tradition'...  :)

Hi guys,

If you want to catch bird by night while fishing you should go fishing from Mtahleb Malta Cliffs when there's no moon and I can guarantee that during the night you will surely catch around eight or more.

make sure you have gloves cause they will start biting while we try to release them.

by the way you will here them all the night sounding " cccaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwaaaaaa "

some of them I think are musicials cause they will start hitting the lines and our fish alarms start sound from eveywhere and you will have a full orchestra all the night.:)

Funiest thing I ever withnessed was at the strand near manuel island. Was fishing for mullet bil bezzun  with a friend of mine. We had two rods out. I left him taking care of rods to go get some drinks.
Coming back saw a crowd gathering around where I left my friend with rods. Eventually found him winding the rod in with a seagull attached flying overhead. pity I didn't have a camera, it was hilarious. eventually the bird was landed.........no, not with a net. A tourist in the crowd put his jacket on the bird while we carfully took the hooks from around the legs. Strange enough not a single hook had enbedded in its foot. I read of kite fishing, but that was rediculous.

They used to freek me out, when going out with boat early, its still dark and they just shoot in front of the search light. There I am staring hard ahead in case there is some object afloat and bang a ghost sudenly goes past.

Guys, kindly modify your own posts to REMOVE ANY REFERENCES TO CATCHING Cief which are protected species in Malta, shooting them or by catches of fishing. All posts are indexed on google and I'd rather what was written here isn't taken out of context by some birdlife watcher and the forum then gets a bad name, however much it may have been written in jest.

Will give it 24hours for ppl to modify their own posts before deleting those making reference to the above.

Thanks.

With Swordfish lines we sometimes catch a cifa lol
This summer while trolling for alungi on the way back form swordfish i caught a Cifa ...lol... it was not hooked it was just (ingassata)from it's  foot... Managed to get it abord and as i got it aboard an other one came as welllll and landed on the bote!!!!!
I know that a lot of you say i see too much cartoons.. LoL.. but it is true
Any one knows the reason why the other 1 came as well???!!!
Do you think maybe they mated or something!?

When you unhook it beware of your eyes because they are very dangerous. Once we lost a ll the line because we couldn't manage with a cifa and tried to attack us!!!!!

If you accidentally catch a ciefa whilst trolling, the safest and kindest thing to do would be to pull it in towards the boat, throw a towel or a piece of cloth over its head, so that you will cover its eyes, and this way it will calm down and stop trying to peck you until you remove the hook / the entanglements and set it free again.
