Title: Antifouling
Post by: shevino on April 08, 2015, 20:55:16 CET
Hi guys,

Any suggestions for a good anti fouling for my 15 feet fibreglass boat please? Ideally self polishing and seasonal. Any suggestions of a good one at a reasonable price? Most importantly where to buy it from  ;) Thanks.

CMP by WURTH ;) or International

Both good paints but pricey and most important they withstand after a year use but personally they double the effort to remove them then.

Lately I am better off using a lower strength antifouling like Sigma or Hempel which are easier to remove after. Careful that they might not be suitable to fast boats.

Barnicles will still form, regardless which brand you use but using a lower grade paint allows me to have the facility to do the job every 3-4 months when barnicles are on the low side.

Hope it helps.

We also use CMP on the kajjik last year the boat was in water in last April and pulled out beginning of oct, must admit this was the best paint ever used, few barnicles were attached and the paint was in very good condition...

CMP is a very good anti fouling Kev. But its hard to remove.

I still use it to paint some parts which I know are prone to barnicles.

Never tried it but I think it is harder to remove than sigma/hempel.

Personally it all boils down on how long you intend to keep the boat in the water.

My boat makes more than 40knts and we cruise at over 20knts and we use Hempel with no issues. There are different variants of Hempel antifouling however. Once we used a variant which was excellent in the water but a real pain to remove. From then on, we used softer compounds. I am sure other paint mentioned here are also good.

Nubian, Jotun and International all have soft self polishing antifouling for that speed. That is unless you would like to go for Nubian Permanent :-P

is it the foreign hempel or the local hempel that is being recommended?

We buy it from the local factory but it is intended for the international market.

This is the 6th year that i have my boat. Each year I lightly sand off the anti-fouling and re-apply again before getting the boat onto mooring for the summer season. With all these repetitive coatings, is it wise to sand off completely the anti-fouling and epoxy down to the gel coat and re-apply all from scratch?

No need to Malvizzu.  As long as you sand down the previous coat, just renapply the antifouling.  I would not recommend sanding down the antifouling and epoxy, unless you really need to re apply the epoxy (i am thinking that this is a water barrier coating applied by petecraft).  Alternatively, have a word with mario about the duration of the epoxy barrier, he would be able to guide you better.

Thanks Joe. Will pop at Petecraft's and have a word.

Chris, coppercoat was more targeted at slower moving boats and sailing boats. What is your max speed and cruise speed?

since i keep my boat year round in msida and have no trailer i think coppercoat would be ideal... cruise at 22knts...
