I'm going to do a two part review on this product, Part I is the product upon purchase, how it looks, feels, value for money etc and Part II will be a review after it's been put to use in the 'field'.

The product in question is a 316 Stainless Steel rod holder designed to be mounted in the gunnel of a boat and these are your traditional rod holders.


First impressions are very good, well finished polished 316 stainless steel, black PVC rod liner with a UV resistant heavy duty cap to keep water out when not in use. I was particularly impressed by the durability of this cap, it's heavy duty unlike some of the cheaper thin rubberised material found on other rod holders which wear out and fade after a few seasons.

As with all proper rod holders, this has a securing pin at the base to hold your rod in place and prevent it from turning whilst in the holder. The pair I got have a 30 degree offset so that I can keep the tips of the rod closer to the water and create more of a flat lined spread. Attwood make these units in 0, 15 and 30 degrees.


Aside from the vertical offset, you can create a horizontal offset when you mount these on your boat by installing them facing slightly outwards so that your rod tips will be aiming outside of the boat. This gives you more room in the spread, especially if you have other rod holders.

They were well priced at $55 available from West Marine, with a lifetime warranty.

Part II

Not going to be a long well. What I can say is that they worked very well, the locking pin at the bottom fits nearly all rod butts and I didn't have any problems.

Material seems of a high quality, no sign of any rust whatsoever and the rubber cap held up well to the sun so far.

I am lookin for rod holders that fix to the railing.Not plastic ones.Any ideas? ???

Camkev, Im not sure but if  you dont want plastic because its not strong believe me Mr.fish have scotty ones with a railing mount and they are extremely sturdy! and plastic doesnt corode etc ;)

camkev havent you checked the ones at gauci borda?? i have a pair of them, they are stainless and till now i haven't had any problems. you can adjust them in any angle you want and they fi to the railing. big boy saw them if you want to ask him

camkev on ebay there are lots of stainless steel rod holders that can be attached and removed whenever you like to the railing. if i remember right west marine has also these type of holders.

The plastic ones whilst good are not that heavy duty, they say up to a max of 20lbs or pressure on them.

Be careful with ebay ones and even some others, as I'm sure you know not all stainless steel is created equally, you get what you pay for.

Gaffer has some of those from Gauci Borda and they've been installed for a while and look very good after several seasons.

yes skip, mine are like those  because i saw them on the gaffer.  they are really cheap, i bought 2 for just 50 euros!!

Kevin, attached to the railing at the back of my boat are two rod holders I got from Gauci Borda.  They are stainless steel, and I beleive they were cheap.  Have a look at them next time you're down on the pontoon.

Gauci Borda have their main shop opposite Ta'Xbiex marina right next to KFC!! I think they also have/had a shop opposite the big marina a few doors up or down from Busy Bee

camkev on ebay on a large number of stainless steel rod holders can be attached and removed as long as you like railings. If I remember correctly, the right to West Marine has these types of holders.
