HEY I WAS LOOKING TO BUY A GOOD REEL ROD TO USE FROM BOAT I WANT THAT I COULD USE IT BOTH FOR MEDIUM SIEZED TROLLING AND ALSO FOR BOTTOM FISHING?CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME IDEAS OF SOME ROD MODELS.MY BUGET IS 120 EURO.
hey Boneshaker - You can by a decent rod/reel combo for 120E. Try out Mr. Fish or Fishing Frenzy on the M'scala bypass. Mark of fishing frenzy could be a great help as he practices both techniques. Make sure the rod is rated between 10-30lbs. I'm not sure what you mean by bottom fishing, but I'm guessing you will be using the same reel for trolling as well as bottome fishing, so you might try and consider a multiplier reel with level wind.
THX GAFFER ,WHAT MEAN LEVEL WIND?ANY IDEAS ABOUT THE LINE I MIGHT ATTACH TO THE MULTYPLIER?
Boneshaker,
The qualities you are looking for with a reel for bottom fishing directly relate to reel gear ratio. For trolling a ratio of around 3.0-3.5:1 is good, as you get cranking power and for every turn of the handle you get the equivalent of x3 line retreived. For bottom fishing you tend to look for a higher gear ratio of say 4.5-5.5:1 as otherwise it's a lot of cranking to get the bait/jig up off the bottom!
A level wind mechanism basically move from left to right to neatly feed the line on to the spool as you retreive it and therefore less hassle for you as you don't have to use your thumb. However they tend to only be found on reels up to a 30lbs class as they are considered to be a weakpoint in reel bigger than that.
For trolling around Malta, 30lbs is an ideal reel size and for basic bottom fishing should be fine as well I would imagine. You might have a slight conflict when it comes to the rod!! For standup trolling guides are preferred over rollers with a tuna stick have a top roller and higher end rods have the first and last guide with rollers. For bottom fishing I believe all rollers are preferred. You can still use either rod but basically it wouldn't be ideal so to speak.
Mister fish has Shimano Hyperloop 20-30lbs rods for around Lm24 but I believe they are all guides no roller tip. The hyperloop are shimano's entry level boat rod. Not familiar with the other brands but rod costs are kept down by quality of the blank, construction material, reel seat and quality of the guides.
In terms of reels, Penn 321GTi better for bottom fishing or 330GTi better for trolling due to their ratio's. Both have similar line capacities. I would probably buy a Shimano TLD15 or TLD20 as a cost effective versatile reel for both trolling and bottom fishing, but it doesn't have a level wind, similar line capacities to the Penn and can still do a max of 22lbs at full which is plenty - but they might be above your budget for the combo price of ?120
You'd probably be more in Okuma waters to be honest though not familar with their reel range. I tend not to buy reels locally as I find them over-priced compared to the internet, but buy rods here as they are a hassle and expense to ship.
Seek some advice from both stores and then decide if you want to buy locally to have the rod/reel straight away. Not sure what Ta'Bormla could offer.

hey skip can you tell me if mister fish of fgura have the rod you told me about it....the shimano.what thickness of line can i use on the multiplier?what about the brand? pls define more by the termine the windlevel
Hey boneshaker, if you go to Mr. Fish Gizra I?m sure kieth the sales man will help you out. I buy all my fishing needs form there since they give good advice and also Keith has the magic touch and the patience to explain.
Hi,
Last time I saw, yes he did. Otherwise there are the slightly more expensive Catana series which he definately had.
Concerning line, well mono is good for trolling, but not so good for bottom fishing as it has stretch. For those reels you'd be looking at 20-30lbs line. I like the Momoi Diamond as it has a higher breaking strength but no one gets it locally.
Level wind, as you turn the handle it moves left and right and put the line back on the reel level!
boneshaker are you sure you are an experienced fisherman and you have been fishing for very long haha???? i dunno but i have my doubts. With fishing there is also a lot of common sense involved so if you use some common sense you will get the hands to it.
thx alot skip....do you know how much are the catana series?
Yep, double the price of the Hyperloop!! Around Lm44
For that you get better blank/material, much better guides, reel seat and foregrip.
I reckon the Hyperloop is okay up to 20-30lbs after that I would go to the Catana series.
thx m8..pls explain the reel seat is were the reel is attached cause i m new to this fishing?does the catana have a roller tip?how much big may i buy a reel?cause i might go out to times and that s all i put it back to place
help pls....pls help me choosing the right rod for my budget!!
The reel seat is where the reel attaches yes. Some are made from hard plastic others metal. Obviously metal is stronger hence the increased cost.
Catana has a roller tip on all models, Hyperloop's don't except maybe the heavy ones.
You match the reel to the rod. So a 20-30lbs rod means a 20-30lbs reel, it's very easy like that. You can put a smaller reel on a bigger rod but the other way around is not recommended.
For your budget you have to go for something like a 20-30lbs Hyperloop or similar rod.
I HAVE TALKED TO MARK OF FISHING FRENZY AND I M GOING TO SEE THEM TOMORROW..THX SKIP.....ABOUT THE LINE IS 0.60MM GD FOR MY PURPOSES AND WHAT KING OF SHWIVEL MAY I USE?CAUSE I DONT WANT TO CUT THE LINE EVERY TIME...GR8 HELP SKIP
The best kind of swivel for that job would be a snap on swivel so you can easily unrig the line everytime you want to change . I also found very effactive the qick snaps. they come on their own but then you can attatch them to a normal barrel swivel. That is the new set up i rigged my handlines with this year to avoid havin a million different rigged handlines in my box.
X SIZE NAMILA?TAHSEB LI HIJA BSAHHITA BIZZEJJED JEW?X TAHSEB LIU ADNI NARMA FUQ IR RUKKEL .60MM TJB ?

pls any more help
search for a reel with a good retrieve ratio rate i.e. for 1 turn - 3 spool turns(example)
from what i rekon this depends a lot on the ball bearings of the reel, the higher the better for retrieving but may fail too!

hi boneshaker.... i just a 20lbs rod with a nice multiplier okuma which has a capacity of 500mtrs - 0.50mm line
that is enough for fishing alungi and bottom fish (100mtr depth). If u intend fishing in more than 100mtrs then better enquire about an electric reel. Do not search locally for electric reel (ghax jisirquk haj)

can anyone give me a site of online fishing supplies that can ship ta malta?
what about buythis reel online?does anyone have a one like this?Penn Fishing Reel 113 Senator 4/0 BIG GAME TROLLING
113H and the 114H are both great long lasting sturdy reels for reasonable prices. Personally for the price difference I would go with the 114H (6/0) which I believe is around $115 (?76) whereas the 113H is $100

NAF NAF.....THX KOLLA...DOES ANYONE HAVE A ROD AND REEL FOR SALE..IN A GOOD CONDITION AT A DECENT PICE?
tistu tiduli xi haga dwar id ditta triana?
boneshaker if i were u I would go to 'Ta Bormla' at Mosta and he will give u what u need as he is genuine. Thats one system the other is go around all shops gather the data and then make a decision. I have used shimano, daiwa, penn, okuma and a few whose name i dont remember and i doubt if they still exist. They all did their work according to what i paid for and their usage.
HOW MAN METRES DO I SIP[POST TO HAVE WITH 50LB FOR A GOOD REEL?
HAS ANYONE SEEN THE COMBO MISTER FISH HAVE FOR PRICE NOT MORE THAN 150 EUROS?IS IT GOOD?ID THOSE NOT HAVE A ROLLER TIP BUT IT LOOKS TOUGH.HOPE TO EHER FROM YOU
if u are fishing for albacore u will have 50 mtrs behind u so u need at least 150 mtrs in reel. If u are trying for swordfish then u will have 120mtrs behind u so u will need at elast 450mtrs in reel. If u are fishing for tuna then u will have again about 50mtrs behind u but if u can have 600 mtrs in reel its better. And these are average numbers.
So u see its not a matter of the reel being good because it has a lot of nylon. its what u are going to use it for.
Having said that the more the reel can spool the better. Look for the number of bearings that the reel has. that will make a difference.
If its a reel that can take 1000 mtrs and has 3 bearings and a reel that can take 400mtrs but with 5 bearings then the 5 bearing one is better.
So as I said befre u need establish what u are going to fish for and lay down the specifications suitable for ur need.
