Hey guys,
I am not in the mood of purchasing a whole stack load of squid this year. Any ideas around the maltese islands by boat where and how to catch these....

1 mile out from Sliema Preluna approx, tal mara area birzebbuga hal far, or zurrieq are very good places
but squids are not very popular this time around
Here on the California coast squid is know as the "candy bait," because so many fish really chew on it. We fish squid at night when they're in the shallow water, and sometimes off shore. I use my deck lights to illuminate the water. Squid are attracted (except during the full moon) we either jig them in one or two at a time, (a messy job :( ) or you can use a crowder and a scoop net and load the bait tanks with them. Our usuall squid are about 7 inches long, two years ago we had a showing of the HUGE models, 80 pounds wasn't unusual, and those things ate each other as fast as you could snap your fingers......I don't want to swim with those critters. They make great bait, and even better calamari....
Best regards, and good luck with the fish.

I've spent half of my life catching squid from the shore in Winter. This time of the year however is not too good. I've written a guide on cathching squid in Malta: http://www.maltabookers.com/fish/squidmalta.asp
My compliments on your artical about squid fishing. Your squird a twice the size of ours, and yours would make wonderful swordfish baits. :o
Thanks. Well, those on the picture are the biggest I caught. Normally they range between 7 and 10 inches. However, fisherman ocassionaly catch squid up to 1 meter in length. The biggest ever caught was from Xemxija Bay many years ago. It was sighted by some swimmers off the coast and everyone tought its a shark. Fisherman then went out and netted it. Probably came in to die. It was kept at the Natural History Musuem in Mdina for many years in some kind of Brine, until recently they had to discard it. I'm not sure what size it was, I think Caro saw it and he can tell us.
Just wondering,
if i go and catch squid in winter and freeze them for next summer, will they be just as good for sword bait?

They are good for Lampuki and Acciol.....don't see why not for Swordfish. I just finished my frozen squid reserve infact, so I bought a plastic one now!

If I'm not mistaken, 2 years ago, some idoid broke the aquarium case for this big squid, and they had to trow it away.
Even a rock from the moon gevin from imperialists USA was stolen from the same natural museum in Imdina.
But then, what the heck, not even one security camera around! typical Malta!
Here's a video of me and 3 other maltese night fishing in Koh Phangan, Thailand (march2006) with live squid !

went out in the evening and came back at around 11 am.
We spend 2 hours fishing for squid. Big lanterns on boat and we caught somthing like fifty.
We kept them alive for later.
Fished with the rod, live squid and caught 3 big baracudas and loads of Jack Snappers
how is fishing up there?

i just spoke to a friend of mine and he is catching squid at the moment he is going next to filfla in about 100mt deep and using flood lights to bring them up and he is also catching cavalli
Damn that's worth doing if there was an easy way of keeping them alive. Any idea how big they are?
they range from one foot to 15 inches
you can keep them in a plastic container on the back with an overflow
you must put in clean water every 5 mins
did you hear something that the gozitans are trawling from marsalforn to malta for squids. maybe this is the reason why this year there arent a lot of squid
Can someone remind me again which are the best months for catching squid around our shores, i really want to freeze some for next year!
