Hi guys,

I was thinking about doing a spearfishing competion friendly. It s like meet up early in the morning let say around 7am on the place and at 8am we will be in the water. We do it for 4 hours so that at 12pm we re out. We try to get a rib of someone so that there will be safety and will be in groups of 2's. Also I suggest to be in a place where there is not so much boat traffic for our safety. After this we go in a restrant and we eat over there and the winners just eat free. Or other wise we cook the fish that we catch on a grill

Should be nice to do this between us and every one is invited. No fees but just for fun. I suggest to be on sunday but better to come with a day so we  choose the best one. In this can enter every one but the fish will have should be of 400gr

what do you think? Its summer. Lets do something. Even partners are invited to the BBq

Great Idea!!! Hope we all manage to find a day when most of it can make it. I am really willing to help with the organisation and saftey issue. Since I understand the fishing memebers too, it would be great to have, for example, those keen on spinning doing the spinning whilst the other swim. Or maybe fishing from land. Obviously we should try and point out a place which the fishermen can fish on one side, and the divers on the other side. Maybe also those into trolling can meet up in the same place too after their morning fishing and swim ashore so we will all be together, cause at the end of the day, its most fun when we all get to chat and have a beer as one whole forum (beer after the comp  ;D). Dont know guys, these are just ideas, but since I missed the last get together cause I was away, I'm getting withdrawl symptoms hehe

By the way jean, nice meeting you. Another thing, me and skip have just talked about a mid summer bbq also. It will be organised by third parties so that there will be no hassle. Will inform you in due time so that you do not miss this one mate.

I love the idea. I am in for it. I'll bring a friend over too. And I totally agree that if someone would spare an Alonga for us on the grill it would be amazing. It's a fish I never tasted  :P. It's nice if we would cook some fish after on a BBQ. Regarding date I would go for a Saturday but that is my 2 cents (i love this 2 cents thing, everybody seems to be using it over here  :D) ..... can't wait to spear with you guys.

For me both Sundays are ok and better then saturdays. Remember that most people work on saturdays

Gazzetta we are in the same boat hehe (excuse the pun). Since I have not speared in quite a while might stick to spinning (and beer and cigs ;D), or else will have a swim and will drag the buoy for anyone who has no partner;). Unless i'm needed to take care of saftey:)  I am just hoping that I will be able to make it.

We should start trying to set a date. Maybe the 27th of this month? or should we aim for august? And place too we should try set.

dont know yet, but preferable on the other side due to sea traffic and no of teams around. as you know its danger to make it at selmon area

As for bagira, mario, balena, bugarass, and frediver I think will be better if we do it in august. I read the forum and ass there are more saying wish that be in august we can arrange for one of that days 2nd or 3rd.

Due that there are nearly equal and on the 1st s dates there are who cannot do it, I talked with some guys of the forum and think the date will be Sunday 3rd August. Sorry for that guys that can make it but every one understand that its hard to get every one together on a single day.

Now just make your name down so we begin to count. Also we will be in couples so put your name and if will be in couple make that of your buddy too so we see the teams. And to that ones that doesnt have a buddy we can meet him up with some one. There we go for fun and all the fish caught will be cooked up and sheared between us after the dive.

The place that will be selected on that day will have different depts so everyone can fish and have fun.

Hi Ed and all forum people!

It's been quite some time (putting it mildly...) since I last posted here - terribly busy and not diving much. Great initiative Ed; well done!

But as Simon might have told you I'm having some serious problems with my sinuses and can't really dive comfortably - very often I'm getting loads of blood coming out of my nostrils - pain starts even at 1m deep! I never had any problems to compensate, but this sinus infection is just killing me - in fact I'm diving maybe once every two weeks or so - I've been on a course of antibiotics, decongestants, sprays and what not...after all that medicine I dived twice and I was in perfect shape - but the third time I went for some diving I was back to square one. On Sunday I tried to go for a dive in the morning and it turned out to be horrible - I can compensate my sinuses when I go down but I have to use my hand to block my nose and blow (Frentzel) - but as you know I do not use that technique to compensate my ears so that is putting a lot of pressure on my ears (as I compensate using the hands free method without knowing it and over and above that I am using Frentzel at the same time) and its very uncomfortable when you are used to having your hands free - then problems really kick off on ascent as there is no way you can take expell air from your sinuses so it has to come out on its own merely by the difference in pressure - the problem is that due to the blockage, it's not coming out, so at the surface I would be feeling my head up pumped with air (painful and makes you dizzy) - then as the air starts to leak slowly it makes cracking sounds :) lol

But anyways - now I'm visiting an ENT specialist to see what's the matter with me cause GPs can get it right somehow!

Until now count me in, as probably I'll still come - in the meantime, if I'm instructed not to dive, I'll advise you to that effect so that you'll know I won't be diving - but in that case I'll still come over for a chat :)

yes you told me on our last chat. Im sorry for this. I dont know if you have any good ent but I use to go to  Pro. Eric Farruga. He s a diver too and he understand us really well on what we are talking about. Even he made some sergeries to spearfishers taht go really deep and they have no problems. They adviced to me and so I do. This guy my friend had a perforated eaur drum and now he s back to normal.

Would be nice if you join but helth comes first my friend. Also I will ask Simon G maybe he brings his dingy due to giovanni s one is on service so we have safty staff in the 4hrs we re doing in the water, so maybe you can help in this.

After I met you today in the sea, I remembered to tell chris ;D   count us in. By the way, is it a singles competition or couples ?

for safety reasons it will be safer to be by couples. Also as I saw yesturday both of you are strong at the moment and your catch was very impresive due that there was no fish around.

We went down too late so only had 1 good hour to fish and nearly at the dark shoot on a bcuda but went out of spear (I was "trying to" filming it)

Also  very nice leccia mark, was a pitty for your cousin but things that happen. Last week I lost a 12kg aj cos shoot it bad, so know how it feels when you on the surface after loosing the chance

How I'd love to come across a big Aj, that would make my day.  If I'll miss it, that would be another story  ???  Sorry to hear that you missed it.  Thats what I told chris, that for sure there will be another chance. Looking forward for the competition, especially the BBQ, cause I havent eaten grilled fish this year  ;D

I think that budagrass had saw them that couply but he had some problem that I don t remember.

for the competition will be fun especially for those who is their first one. As for safety we will have a dingy and trying for 2 boats, and as for the BBq will have 2 "geasers" waiting for us :)

I don t know cris how he was but mine was my fault, I didn t  shave my face and on my second aspetto the mask was full of water and with the bait seing it getting afrain, and then I saw it coming from the blue (was maybe 15mtr drop off) head on, and when it turned I shoot a long shoot with the 105 and in fact I had penetrated it well nut only 3cm from the upper fin, so I blowed in the mask as soon as I shoot and sawe the shoot. Went up and saw  the fish to the ground and was afraid to take it up,  the spear tuched the rocks at a bottem of around 30mtr and saw the fish getting away. My heart stopped.

That day after 5 mins made a caduta on 3 x 6kg  ajs too and the same, water was getting in the mask and as I was my head down coudnt see well and I missed the shoot. Then they stayed with me until I loaded and as I loaded they disappear :(

its 7 kg. Really nice and its rare to find in our sea. In maltese they call it serra hoxna. As I go nearlly each day I only saw 1 in my life

If Im not mistaken, they call it strilja emic.......Mhux han meriek, cause I don't know for sure.  They grow very big, infact the record of the biggest one landed is by a local (dunstan) ....40 kgs

I had heard a similar story of someone losing an Aj like you did, apparently you should never let it hit the bottom.  I should start fishing deeper, maybe Ill come across one, one day. ;)  Remember to shave before you dive, so the fish will see you attractive  ;D

Its very visible that they arent the same species, in fact the strilja that you are refering to are not good to eat. Does anyone eat them ? 

Thats why I like calling it Leccia, but people tend to have a habit to call the leccia/serra hoxna a strilja.

even the strija i never eated it so cannot say but the laccia I saw it for sale even at miracle foods. Nevver tased it but i think ifits not caught from a port its good to eat

It's a very tasty fish to eat, I have tried it and it's delicious.  It does not matter if its from a port or not, because the fish migrates and does not vacate just one single area and also eats other fish, so I dont think it will effect the taste of the fish.  When your dealing with fish that are not migratory and dont eat other fish then I agree with you that the taste is different (example Sargi)

i agree with what your saying but the difference in smell it can be seen. I dont like to fish a lot in ports but sometimes I do. Over ther the fish that I catch and even the octopus have differnt smell and tast than those caught like lapsi.

It's true, Fish caught in open waters tend to have a darker colour, but I never tried smelling them  :P.  I'm off to do some errands then off for a dive.  Maybe we'll meet up again in the sea  ;)

Strilja is Trachinotus ovatus and Serra is Lichia amia - you caught one of the latter kind.

I saw 2 big ones ... really big propja cause I think they were in the 20 kilos region. They were at Ahrax from the campsite side just round the corner from the first turn on the right ........ around 15 mtrs away. They were swimming in around 22mtrs and I was doing an aspetto in mid sea at around 15mtrs on a rock and they just passed under me which was too late because I was out of air and they were coming too fast.

Hi guys,

the weather looks to be good for Sunday. So thats how we are going to do it.

On Sunday 6:30am I will text every one on the list and will meet at aorund 7am at the place. Each team need to have 1 float (or 2 tight together) and the competirtors have to stay at a maximum of 10 mtrs apart. This is due for safety reasons so that everyone have fun. I don t have any list of the points how they will be classified  but we will give it on the place.

Vallid fish will be 400g and will have a penality if the fish is under 250g. Groupers must be of 4kg and penality if under 2.5kg. As for fish over 10kg it will have valid points of 10kgs and the extra weight doesn t metter.

Over there will have 2-3 boats so if someone needs any kind of help just make notice and can get up on one of them.

For the first place there will by a trophy for both spearos and also for the biggest fish caught during the competion for the spearo who shoot the fish.

After we will be having a bbq and cook  the fish caught during that day. This is a rule so every one have fun. Over there we cook all the fish needed to be eaten.

I will be bringing soft drinks and water for everyone even for the bbq.I will be having some friend waithing with the bbq On so that we don t take long to eat.  Also will bring fresh bread too. I will be in contact with all of you by pm so that till saturday morning will have confermation how much guys we will be with partners

hi guys,

I will be bringing drinks for 17 guys and other 6 that confirmend that will be with partners. The ones that had not confired that will be with partners pls arrange for their drinks.

As for the competition the weather looks very good. There are several places where we can do it. Tomorrow at 6.30am will send you all the place where this will be held and then you can conferm the places with wifes/partners where the bbq will gona be. Also bagira will be coming so he can help us too for the bbq.

Remember every one needs to have 1 float and the divers need to be not more then 10mtrs apart so that we increase safety. This is a  driendly competition and no one needs to show off or similar things. We go there just for fun and then we will enjoy the bbq

I will bring also the cooler and ice so the drinks and fish will keep cool but who can bring a cooler and some ice with him will be much better.

I will bring also some plastic catlery so that will have in what we eat and drink. And remember bring a "malja " hahahahha..........

wished you was with us. Today I thank to all the guys that came but especially to skip, simonG and buzumark. They worked a lot. Infact if it wasn t for them it was really hard to get that catches. We had selected a place where normally there is no so mch boats but unfortunatly we where like in a traffic jam.

Tommorow I will post the positions cos Im tooooooooooooooooooo tierd. First place was by us, giovanni and I and second was \marcam who had dived really good. Bigest fish was caught by giovanni with a grouperof 4.32kg

What a day ....... really had fun. Everything went smooth and weather was great too. Hope there will be another one very soon. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the event and made it a total success.

I have a couple of other water pics so I will post those. All pics were taken by my gf, and when going to chase down the on-coming boats heading for the spearos I nearly put her in the water a few times with some aggresive turns and acceleration which she wasn't too amused about! One time she almost went in camera and all and another time she ended up with the cushion she was sitting on but on the deck (floor) of the boat and a couple of minor bruises!

yes its true. If it wasnt for nick out there for sure we wouldn t get out. Our problem as a team yesturday was about you markcam, belive me. As we was having fun each time we where seeing a boat or that jet skie we where worry about you. Nick was trying to get himself for both of us, and as when they see us out side they where getting more to the shore where you was diving.

It was a good event, I wished we (our team) enjoyed it more while we were in the water, but my friend got out of the water after only a quarter of an hour and sat on the rocks because he felt very sick.  So I had to swim in the very shallow waters near the rocks where he got out of the water.  I managed to get only one sargu... :(

At least we went to the BBQ after, so I still caught a nice, big, roasted sargu!! ;) ;) ;)
