Title: Going Fishing
Post by: shanook on July 28, 2008, 13:30:33 CET
hi guys i opened this post so that those who are going fishing can let the other members know that they are going to be out at sea. Its not a safety feature just so that others who are going out can make contact.

I am off for Alungi and maybe a spot of deepsea fishing tomorrow 29th July. Out of B'bugia harbour by 5.30am and heading 210 degrees to troll about 5 miles off filfal. Will be back by 1pm if Alungi not biting.

Tony would be useful to put in the Organised Trips and Cost Sharing section that way if people are looking to go out and you have space they can post and get in touch

Good Idea Shanook,

so that at least if there's someone else fishing and VHF will be in range, you can have some company.

even if there's someone who wants to share some bearings for deepsea fishing, be assure that you're more than welcome ;D ;D ;D :D ;D

Hi Shanook I'm going to be there too tomorrow as I decided to give alungi another shot this week especially after hearing that Ianis caught around 17 on Friday last week. I will be on channel 6 so we can keep in touch. I also spoke to camkev this evening as he might be there on his boat too.

Hi Guys, was out fishing saturday on my boat with shanook, had a good time there was lots of fish activities, we managed to catch 7 albacore. The bites were all between the first two ridges between ghar hassan and filfla. Be carefull as there are a lot of kannizati about. By the looks of it bait fish where underneat them hence the concentration of tuna.
Any other MFF members out there saturday, what was your catches? Poline tuna said he had a good catch that morning.
Good luck to all going out tuesday

Hi Ramio, I was out last Saturday in my usual place between the two ridges south east of Filfla.

Up until 10.30am I had only caught one Alunga using what had previously been very effective pink and purple lures. Was about to head back in when I got a call from Skip informing me that other MFF boats were out and catching lots of alungi near Filfla. Changed my lures to Rapalas headed a couple of miles closer to Filfla and caught two more Alungi and a Pastardella straight away within the space of an hour. My fuel was running down by noon so I headed back into Msida.

I guess fishing is all about location, location, location but was really surprised how a previously productive location was either devoid of fish or the fish weren't interested in lures which had worked very effectively in previous weeks. Just out of curiousity did anyone catch on squid or feather lures last Saturday?

Wish I could go out tomorrow as the weather seems ideal, unfortunately I have to wait for the weekend. Good luck to those who are going out tomorrow!

I should be going out on Thursday with SimonG for the day. I think we are going to try and go more or less West of Dweja and out around 20-25miles and see what we find out there as BFT are known to hang around. Might be too early in the season for that location but as I've never been out there before at this time of year will give it a go.

Will be on Ch.06 this time around with the fixed VHF, callsign Eagle One or Skip, MMSI# 235065656

Just returned from a morning trolling off Filfla.

Below is an image of what we caught - 2 chunky alongi and a tumbrell caught early in the morning. This tumbrell must have been feeding on something like creatine given its size!  ;D

As a general picture of the conditions which we had, there was very little activity around other than some surfacing shoals of small fish just before sunrise. Sea state was almost mirrorlike with a slight Northerly breeze at times. And the bites came late, one at around 10 and the other around noon I believe.

Guess today's trip was the last one for alongi this season for me. Looking forward to give BFT a go now.

Probably worth trying Chris. There's the spearfishing competition in the morning and then a bbq later on around lunch time. I reckon there are good chances of catching both BFT or Alungi tomorrow and probably alot of ppl will be out!

thanks mate: didnt do the west side as we left for B'bugia at 5.30 so we did the east side went out about 6 miles and trolled to Bugiba. got back just about sundown.
Yep its getting harder and harder to find some decent fish. All we have to do is keep on trying thats all. I will have a go on Gozo side during the week.

Camkev, Bigboy, Lapsiboy, ForTuna and me are back from a night and 1/2 day fishing !!

The initial plan was to go today early morning trolling and maybe some jigging but as we came back from the Trolling competition meeting finding out that the forecast was of Force 4 @ 8am we decided to go for some fishing. Choice varied from fishing for mulett @ Msida to Beachcasting but everyone agreed to go on the boat and try our luck for some night fishing !!

Left Msida at about 10.30 - 11 and stoped for some night fishing but had no hits neither on fresh bibi, frozen bibi, squid and prawns.

Luckily enough, BigBoy brought with him some light to try some squid fishing.  Managed to catch 7 in all (1 big boy 1 me 2 Lapsi boy and the rest ForTuna) altough we taught they were 8 lol but found 7 in the end.

@ about 6.30 am we went for some trolling trying our luck for a barracuda or plamtu but no hits.  Camkev tested out his new trolling system with 4 rods with was a success !!

Me and Placebo are back from a 1/2 day fishing.  We were supposed to fish some time for squid but both of ours forgot to turn the clocks 1 hour back and so we were late.  We went trolling then and managed to get 3 strikes and 2 catchs, 2 nice kubrit of approx weight of 1.1kg each.

Met KaptanJr out there aswell.

Would like to thanks Placebo for this fishing trip, really enjoyed it.
Thanks mate and really wonderful boat especilly with rough seas.

Went out with lamacca this morning, we left from msida slipway so we could get used to it at around 5:30, did some trolling till it was dawn with no strikes until we decided to do some bottom fishing. Had a strike while I was reeling in on a surface lure, the fish hit us horizzontaly and rushed it's way to the shore, in a matter of seconds while i was still recovering from the panic and trying to adjust the drag a huge yact passed silently by us grabbing my line on the way. Lost some line an xrap and worst of all what could have been my best fish. After bottom fishing for an hour Lamacca decided to hook a live sawrella on a float which resulted in him landing a nice cervjola. We cought some nice pagell and sparli, overall not a bad morning.

It was not his foult, we had the motor switched off, the fish went srtait from left to right and didn't even dive down so most of the line was in the air and the yact was too close to us to be able to do anything. Tough luck man.

Actually it was a pretty huge yacht shanook :) I bragged/sweared and moaned about it for an hour but it's not worth it to ruin a day for some bad luck and besides my buddy cought a deceant fish with a new method and he was ecstatic, so yeah not a bad morning at all :)

Today went some shore fishing with camkev and after some trolling.

As for shore fishing we caught some nice sized mulett and 2 awrat which are very nice.

@ 4 went trolling for a plamtu but we were not planned to go trolling so we left our rods at home. On our way in we hooked one on some very light tackle and managed to get it very close to the boat many times but as it was ready to be gaffed it spat the lure and said bye :(

Went spinning , Everyhting was going as usual (except not catching anything :P) and then all of a sudden i felt asif my reel jammed up....I thugged the rod and after that the drag just speeded off, the fish left me with barely any line on my reel and as soon as i realized it was coming to an end i tightened up the drag, as i did this the fish kept on pulling the rod was on the very end about to snap but the line was earlier and the fish took my lure and almost all my line...it left me speechless !...This time the fish won =/

Like skip said its totally "sod's law" when your geared up light you hit into monsters and when not,you don't!!
